In this study, we investigated the properties and manufacturing methods of soil mural finishing layers fabricated using animal glue, starch adhesive(wheat paste), and Dobak glue. We assessed the workability and weatherproofing properties of the earthen plaster and finishing layers fabricated using concentrations of 3%, 5%, 7% and 10% for each adhesive. The results showed that a mixture using 3% or 5% starch adhesive or 3% Dobak glue was suitable for constructing the finishing layer. For finishing layers made with animal glue, earthen plaster had poor workability. It was dry and easily broken as the concentrations of animal glue increased. However, specimens made with low concentrations of animal glue did not exhibit surface deterioration after a freezing-thawing test. Therefore, animal glue mixtures could possibly be used for constructing finishing layers in concentrations lower than 3%. Mixtures containing starch adhesive produced plasters with good workability. Additionally, starch adhesive enhanced compression strength. However, when starch adhesive was mixed at concentrations above 7%, the surface exhibited roughening and staining in freezing-thawing tests. When Dobak glue was used in mixtures, it enhanced compression strength, but concentrations above 5% produced specimens with surface cracking. For concentrations of 3%, there were no cracks and the specimens were stable after freezing-thawing tests, so concentrations below 3% of Dobak glue are suitable for constructing finishing layers. We expect this study will be useful for restoring the traditional technology of soil mural finishing layers and suggest using adhesives to construct the finishing layer.
It was investigated whether the scrap tire can be recycled as a construction material for controlling the frost heave of the ground. Some frost heave tests and a frost penetration depth test in the laboratory were performed on the weathered granite soil mitred with variable amount of scrap tire powder under the atmospheric temperature at -$17^{\circ}$ to find the basic effects of the scrap tire on the control of frost. The frost heave control layer of the crushed stone mixed with scrap tire chips directly below thin subbass in the bituminous pavement was found to be effective for practical use. And the equation for the required thickness of this frost heave control layer with freezing index was suggested.
This experiment was conducted to investigate the distribution and compositions of clay mineral and to replenish the soil classification system in Korea. Soil layer samples were collected from 26 residuum and colluvium soil series out of 390 soil series in Korea, and then analyzed for soil physical and chemical characteristics, mineral and chemical compositions of clay in B horizon soils. Major clay minerals of residuum and colluvium were illite and chlorite in soils originated from the sedimentary rock such as limestone, shale, sandstone and conglomerate; quartz and kaolin in soils originated from rhyolite, neogene deposits, porphyry and tuff; and kaolin and quartz in the soils originated from granite, granite gneiss and anorthosite. Clay minerals in Korean soils were divided into 4 groups: mixed mineral group(MIX) mainly contained with illite, kaolin and vemiculite; kaolin group(KA) with kaolin and illite; chlorite group(CH) with chlorite and illite; and smectite group(SM) with kaolin, illite and smectite. The most predominant clay mineral group was kaolin group(KA) with kaolin and illite; an mixed mineral group(MIX) with illite, kaolin and vemiculite. Cation exchange capacity (CEC) of clay was low in the soils mainly composed with MIX and KA groups and silica-alumina molar ratio of clay was high in the soils composed with SM group
In this study, thirty-two stands in Kwangnung forest located in the central part of Korea were preferentially selected. In each stand, all stems for trees and shrubs were recorded by species and their girths were measured down to 5cm. In addition, several enviromental factors such as field soil pH, field soil moisture, soil compressibility, depth of soil, thickness of litter layer, elevation and basal area were measured. Three soil cores were sampled and various physical and chemcial properties was determined. The vegetational data were subjected to three kinds of multivariate ordination(PO, PCA, RA). The results suggested that Kwangnung forest was consisted of three forest types: coniferous, mixed and broad leaved forest communities. The relation between the stand scores of ordination and several environmental factors were investigated in terms of correlation analysis in order to examine the relationships between the vegetation and certain environmental factors. As a result of this analysis, the amount of sand content in A1 horizon decreased frm the coniferous to broad leaved forest, while maximum field capacity, pore space, exchangeable cations, loss on ignition, soil pH nad the amount of total nitrogen had a tendancy to increase significantly. However, easily soluble phosphorus appeared to have little to do with the forest types. The result of species ordination of centered-standardized PCA suggested that the major successional pathway in Kwangnung forest was; Pinus densifloralongrightarrowQuercus mongolica, Q. serrata, Q. alienalongrightarrowCarpinus laxifloralongrightarrowC. erosa in sequence. This trend is in good agreement with the past studies. In three kinds of ordination (centered PCA, centered-standardized PCA and RA) based on nineteen species and twenty-five stands, the total variances accounted for the first three axes were 77%, 46% and 63% respectively. The estimated beta diversity in Kwangnung forest assumed as a coenocline, was 1.5~1.8 HC. Increasing the effect of the sampling errors on ordination perfermance, this low heterogeneity seems to cause the poor concentration of the total variance. The results from the four kinds of ordination were in good agreement with each other, especially between PO, centered-standardized PCA and RA appeared robust. It seems to be worthy of applying multivariate method for analyzing other forest communities in Korea.
An ore of stone obtained from quarry lose its about 60% such as the muck and the stone-dust during the process of making the architectural block, the crushed aggregate and so on. A part of the muck is only reutilized for the crushed aggregate as road pavement materials, while the most of the muck in the shape of powder is mixed with water and then it is deposited in a sludge tank. The muck in the shape of powder is called the stone-dust. If the stone-dust is discharged and sprayed, an ecosystem will have terrible damage because the seepage of surface water, the flow of ground water and the movement of air are not occurred smoothly by packing the void of soils. As the Waste Management Law (2003) in Korea, the stone-dust is sorted out the industrial waste and the most of that is dumped in ground. Therefore, the establishments of an efficient recycling plan are necessary through the improvement of engineering properties of the stone-dust. To investigate the possibility of recycle and improvement for the stone-dust, the stone-dust and natural soils are sampled from six quarries in Korea. The various soil tests are performed by use of the mixed soils with the stone-dust content ratio. As the result of various soil tests, the recycle possibility of the stone-dust is analyzed as subbase layer materials of the roads.

In this study, we analyzed the soil salinity of Saemangeum agricultural land using GIS spatial interpolation method. Dominant soils series of experimental sites were Munpo (coarseloamy, mixed, non-acid, mesic, typically fluvaquents), which was based on the fluvio-marine deposit. Soil samples were periodically collected at 0~20cm and 20~40cm layer from each site. First, the distribution characteristics of EC, ESP, and SAR according to spatial interpolation were analyzed using 142 sample points. Through the error analysis of 143 validation points, the IDW method for EC and SAR, and the Kriging interpolation method for ESP were selected as the optimal interpolation method. Using the optimal interpolation method, the characteristics of EC, ESP, and SAR were analyzed for the change of soil salinity from 2014 to 2016. As a result, EC, ESP and SAR were decreased by 0.26mg/L, 5.97mg/L and 0.73mg/L respectively due to the dilution effect caused by rainfall.
This study was carried out to provide fundamental data for forest land and the environment by investigating the vegetation structure and soil properties of forest land where Sarcodon impricatus are present. The study area was divided into the Quercus mongolica community, dominated by Q. mongolica and the Quercus variabilis community, a mixed forest with Q. variabilis, Q. mongolica and Pinus densiflora. Also, Calamagrostis arundinacea in the former community and Disporum smilacinum and Carex siderosticta in the latter community showed significant levels as indicator species. Both communities showed a strong correlation between available phosphate and pH, sand, and clay, and the high organic matter content and slightly acidic pH of the soil are believed to be related to the development of S. impricatus. The species appearing at the lower layer continue to dominate because the species appearing at the upper layer have secured realized niches. The site was distributed in a relatively humid place in a north-east direction, and soil was developed with a thin litter layer and low rock exposure. In the selected S. impricatus growing areas, vegetation centered on highly adaptable species to disturbance or external interference was developed. Therefore, it is expected to be used as fundamental data to promote the occurrence of S. impricatus during artificial cultivation, as it is possible to identify the stand where S. impricatus occurs indirectly.

This study aims to suggest adequate soil management through the analysis of physicochemical properties of soil in the planting grounds of Incheon International Airport, which was constructed on a massive land reclamation site. Study areas were 5 sites at the international business complex, the passenger terminal, the airport support complex, the free trade zone, and the access road. Soil profile analysis showed that 9 plots out of the 27 plots were hardpan and heterospere within 80cm from the soil surface. The earth laid on the ground was categorized as gravel based soil(4 plots), dredged soil from the sea bottom and mixed reclamation materials(2 plots), clay with poor permeability(3 plots) and waste construction material(1 plot). Average soil hardness was $11.5kg/cm^2$ and soil textures were sandy soil, sandy loam and loamy sand. Average soil pH was 6.7 and average organic matter content was 0.7%. Electrical conductivity was 0.0dS/m and exchangeable cation concentrations were $Ca^{2+}$ 3.4cmol/kg, $Mg^{2+}$ 1.5cmol/kg, $K^+$ 0.3cmol/kg and $Na^+$ 1.0cmol/kg. Average cation exchange capacity was 11.0cmol/kg. Although average figures in Solum mostly meet the landscape design criteria, properties of each soil layer showed various values sometimes over the limit. Base saturations were $Ca^{2+}$ 29.9%, $Mg^{2+}$ 13.3% and $K^+$ 3.7% for lower soil, $Ca^{2+}$ 33.3%, $Mg^{2+}$ 17.0% and $K^+$ 2.7% for mid-soil and $Ca^{2+}$ 32.6%, $Mg^{2+}$ 12.2% and $K^+$ 1.9% for upper soil. Exchangeable sodium percentages were 16.4% for lower soil, 7.5% for mid-soil and 4.7% upper soil. Sodium adsorption rates were 0.8 for lower soil, 0.3 for mid-soil and 0.2 for upper soil. Factors affecting to the vegetation growth were heterogeneity and poorness of solum, disturbance of dredged soils, high soil hardness including hardpan in the subsurface soil layer and shallow effective soil depth, high soil acidity, imbalance of base contents, low organic matter content and low available phosphate levels in the soil.
Mother-of-pearl turtle shell lacquerware refers to a decoration made of a mother-of-pearl, a turtle shell and metal wires. This lacquerware features bright color tone as it is produced by sprinkling metal powder over its entire surface. This study aimed to find out its material properties and characteristics by using an optical microscopy and conducting a SEM-EDS analysis on the cross section of lacquer coating. As a result, it was found that charcoal powder and soil powder were mixed for undercoating. Then a mixture of cinnabar lacquer and monoclinic arsenic sulfide mineral ($As_2S_3$) was coated on the undercoating and brass powder was sprinkled on top of it. Especially, a little amount of pigment was found on the lacquer layer, which is distinguished from the colors used for conventional lacquer patterns. In addition, it was also found that the cinnabar lacquer and monoclinic arsenic sulfide mineral were mixed together.
This study reports on the genesis and mineralogical characteristics of the clay minerals in the soils derived from the five major parent rocks of granite, granite-gneiss, limestone, shale, and basalt in Korea. The investigation on the mineralogical aspects of primary and secondary minerals of the rocks and coarse fractions in the soils have been already reported. In this report, the identification of clay minerals in the soil clay fractions was done through the analyses of chemical, X-ray diffraction, and thermal methods. The studies showed clearly that much of the clay minerals was evolved by the weathering of primary minerals and some were further developed by the transformation of secondary minerals. Cation exchange capacity(CEC) of the clay fractions increased with higher amotunts of vermiculite, chlorite, and illite, however, decreased with higher hydroxy octahedral sheet within the interlayer spaces of vermiculite even if dominant clay with vermiculite. Feldspars in the granite and granite-gneiss might be completely transformed to kaolin mineral, Illite, chlolrite, and vermiculite formed by the alteration of micas, amphibole, augite, and primary chlorile seem to be subsequently transformed to the mixed layer minerals such as illite/vermiculite, illite/chlorite, and chlorite/vermiculite. These weathering products may be ultimately transformed into kaolin minerals. The smectite minerals in the clay fractions of the soils developed on the limestone are considerably present and they seem to be formed directly by the precipitation from high Mg solution and/or by the transformation of vermiculite from micas and chlorite in the parent materials. Abundant presence of illite in the soil clays developed on the shale is considered to have inherited from the fine particles and more resistant hydrous muscovite. The weathering sequences of the hydrous muscovite were as follows according to the degree of soil development ; hydrous muscovite ${\rightarrow}$ illite/vermiculite mixed layer(Inceptisols, Daegu series) and hydrous muscovite ${\rightarrow}$ illite/vermiculite mixed layer ${\rightarrow}$ vermiculite ${\rightarrow}$ kaolin mineral(Alfisols, Buyeo series). The plagioclase in the basalt might be mostly weathered to kaolin minerais. The augite in the basalt is likely to be transformed through progressive stage of weathering, augite ${\rightarrow}$ chlorite ${\rightarrow}$ chlorote/vermiculite mixed layer ${\rightarrow}$ vermiculite ${\rightarrow}$ kaolin. Another weathering sequence of augite could be expected, augite ${\rightarrow}$ chlorite ${\rightarrow}$ illite by the presence of illite and illite/vermiculite mixed layer in the clay fractions. Vermiculite and gibbsite were quantified from thermogravimetry(TG) and kaolin minerals, from both TG and differerential thermal analysis (DTA). Vermiculite in Jangseong series from the limestone was the dominant clay mineral of 21.7 percent and had a range in the order of 9.2 percent in Buyeo series to 5.4 percent in Daegu series from the shale. The rest soils ranged from 8.8 to 28.3 percent. Kaolin minerals were the dominant clay mineral of 32.7 percent in Asan series from the granite-gneiss and Gueom series of 32.0 percent from the basalt. The soils from the limestone ranged from 9.4 to 14.9 percent. The rest soils ranged from 8.9 to 28.6 percent. Gibbsite were 3.9 and 2.3 percent for Weoljeong and Chahang series from the granite, respectively. In Asan and Cheongsan series from the giranite-gneiss were 1.4 and 4.5 percent, respectively, and 3.6 percent in Jangpa series from the basalt.
