  • The electrochemical chlorine evolution reaction (CER) is an important electrochemical reaction and has been widely used in chlor-alkali electrolysis, on-site generation of ClO-, and Cl2-mediated electrosynthesis. Although precious metal-based mixed metal oxides (MMOs) have been used as CER catalysts for more than half a century, they intrinsically suffer from a selectivity problem between the CER and parasitic oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Hence, the design of selective CER electrocatalysts is critically important. In this review, we provide an overview of the fundamental issues related to the electrocatalysis of the CER and design strategies for selective CER electrocatalysts. We present experimental and theoretical methods for assessing the active sites of MMO catalysts and the origin of the scaling relationship between the CER and the OER. We discuss kinetic analysis methods to understand the kinetics and mechanisms of CER. Next, we summarize the design strategies for new CER electrocatalysts that can enhance the reactivity of MMO-based catalysts and overcome their scaling relationship, which include the doping of MMO catalysts with foreign metals and the development of non-precious metal-based catalysts and atomically dispersed metal catalysts.

  • catalytic combustion is accomplished by the chemical reaction between fuel and oxidizer at the catalyst surface, different from conventional combustion. Therefore, it is important that the fuel and air stream are well mixed and supplied uniformly prior to the combustion region. If the flow is maldistributed, a hot spot may occur that can lead to subsequent catalyst and substrate damage. Therefore, in order to enhance the mixing and flow uniformity, in this study, the perforated plate is used. A numerical simulation is performed to investigate the variation of flow characteristics by changing various parameters. Under each condition, the uniformity of the flow stream at the entrance of the catalyst section is evaluated and compared. The results show that the uniformity can be effectively improved for most of the case by using the well-designed perforated plates.

  • The aim of this study is the development of technologies of methanol production from carbon dioxide by catalytic hydrogenation. Experiments about carbon dioxide hydrogenation by catalyst mixed with CuO, ZnO, $Cr_2O_3$ and $Al_2O_3$ were conducted to find optimum catalyst and reaction condition. Reactions were carried out at atmospheric and high pressures between 200 to $350^{\circ}C$. High yield of methanol was obtained with $Cu/ZnO/Cr_2O/Cr_2O_3/Al_2O_3$ catalyst at $250^{\circ}C$ and above 30 atmospheric pressure. There was not any increament of hydrogenation reactivity for the catalysts which was made by the addition of Pd to $Cu/ZnO/Cr_2O/Cr_2O_3/Al_2O_3$.

  • $TiO_2/SO_4{^{2-}}$ was prepared by precipitation from the mixed solution of titanium chloride and hydrochloric acid followed by modification with sulfuric acid. The characterization of prepared catalyst was performed by using IR, XPS, XRD and DT-TGA. Infrared spectra of $TiO_2/SO_4{^{2-}}$ showed bidentate sulfate ion coordinated to the surface of $TiO_2$. The acid strength of modified catalyst was at least $H_0{\leq}-14.52$, showing the superacidic properties which are attributed to the double bond nature of S=O of the complex formed by the interaction of $TiO_2$ with sulfate ion. For $TiO_2/SO_4{^{2-}}$, the specific surface area increased and the transition from the amorphous to anatase phase occurred at a higher temperature, as compared with pure $TiO_2$.

  • Ammonia is a major compound of odor in livestock house. To enhance the performance of ammonia oxidation (decomposition). the gas-liquid, two phase photocatalytic oxidation system was designed and prepared in this study. Commercial P-25 as $TiO_2$ catalyst was used for ammonia decomposition. V/P-25 catalyst prepared by sol gel method was also used for the removal of by-producted $NO_x$ in $NH_3$ oxidation reaction. When $TiO_2$ was used as a photocatalyst, the conversion to $N_2$ in ammonia decomposition reached above 90% until 200hr (The air flow rate of 4L/min with the ammonia concentration up to 25ppm.). However, considerable amounts of NO and $NO_2$ were formed as a result of $NH_3$ oxidation (as a by-product). Therefore, we added Vanadia impregnated $TiO_2$(P-25) catalyst for the removal of $NO_x$ at the end of reaction trail. The results of a pilot-scale operation were successful to achieve the simultaneous removal of $NH_3\;and\;NO_x$ about 81 and 87%, respectively.

  • Biodiesel (fatty acid methyl esters) have used to as substitutes for petro-diesel by mixed-form with petro-diesel. In several processes of biodiesel production, alkali-catalyst transesterification produced to biodiesel of high contents with short reaction time. In this study, we investigate the optimal condition of alkali-catalyst transesterification of rapeseed oil produced at Jeju island in Korea using response surface methodology. The optimal condition of biodiesel production is reaction temperature 59.7$^{\circ}C$, catalyst amount 1.18%, oil to methanol molar ratio 1:8.75, and reaction time 5.18 min. At that reaction condition, the fatty acid methyl ester contents of product are above 97%. Our results may provide useful information with regard to the development of more economic and efficient biodiesel production system.

  • CO oxidation was performed with Cu-Mn and Cu-Zn co-precipitated catalysts as differential precipitant, metal ratio and calcination temperature. The effects of differential metal mole ratio and calcination temperature in mixed metal oxide catalyst were investigated with CO oxidation reaction. Physiochemical properties were studied by XRD, $N_2$ sorption and SEM. 2Cu-1Mn with $Na_2CO_3$ catalyst calcined at $270^{\circ}C$ has a large surface area $43m^2/g$ and the best activity for CO oxidation. $Cu_{0.5}Mn_{2.5}O_4$ in XRD peak shows the lower activity than others. The catalytic activity over the catalyst calcined $270^{\circ}C$ displayed the highest conversion, and it was better activity comparing with Pt catalysts CO conversion.

  • The $NiSO_4/CeO_2-ZrO_2 $catalysts containing different nickel sulfate and $CeO_2$ contents were prepared by the impregnation method, where support, $CeO_2-ZrO_2$was prepared by the coprecipitation method using a mixed aqueous solution of zirconium oxychloride and cerium nitrate solution followed by adding an aqueous ammonia solution. No diffraction line of nickel sulfate was observed up to 20 wt %, indicating good dispersion of nickel sulfate on the surface of $CeO_2-ZrO_2$. The addition of nickel sulfate (or $CeO_2$) to $ZrO_2$ shifted the phase transition of $ZrO_2$ from amorphous to tetragonal to higher temperatures because of the interaction between nickel sulfate (or $CeO_2$) and $ZrO_2$. A catalyst (10-$NiSO_4/1-CeO_2-ZrO_2$) containing 10 wt % $NiSO_4$ and 1 mole % $CeO_2$, and calcined at $600{^{\circ}C}$ exhibited a maximum catalytic activity for ethylene dimerization. The catalytic activities were correlated with the acidity of catalysts measured by the ammonia chemisorption method. The role of $CeO_2$was to form a thermally stable solid solution with zirconia and consequently to give high surface area, thermal stability and acidity of the sample.

  • Emissoin of heavy duty vehicle have much positioned in air pollution although its limited number of vehicles. CNG vehicles are coming to the fore as one of the solution of diesel vehicles. CNG vehicles exhaust smaller emission than diesel vehicles on PM and NOx. In this study, aftertreatment technologies are introduced on vehicles which use CNG and hydrogenmixed fuel. Withmixing hydrogen with CNG, combustion efficiency is enhanced, and harmful emission might be decreased, but methane that is main component of CNG brings green house effect. In order to remove methane and NOx in exhaust gas of CNG engine, methane oxidation catalyst and SCR technologies were respectively analyzed.
