Mushroom sciarid fly Lycoriella ingenua (Dufour), syn. L. mali (Fitch) is one of the most common fly pests affecting the mushroom cultivation in Korea. This study was carried out to investigate the development at different temperatures and damages of L. ingenua in A. bisporus mushroom cultivation. Rearing of mushroom flies were carried out on mycelial culture in Petri dishes. The development of L. ingenua from egg to adult at the temperature of 16, 20, 24, $28^{\circ}C$ were 35.2, 25.8, 23.5, and 22.2 days, respectively. Adult flies invade mushroom farms and oviposit in freshly spawned compost. Damages are mainly caused by the larvae of 1-7 mm, which feed on growing mycelium and also developing stipes and caps of mushrooms. Adult flies spoil the appearance of the fruiting bodies, spread various fungal and bacterial disease, and transmit mites. The damages by mushroom flies increased without pest control causing yield loss of up to 27%.
The aim of this study is to evaluate the effects of organic materials on soil organisms. Changes in the community structure, and population density of soil organisms (microbes, nematodes, and microarthropods) were studied in a Korean ginseng field. Phospholipid fatty acids analysis showed that the relative abundances of bacteria, fungi, and actinomycetes did not differ significantly. The aerobes/anaerobes ratio was the lowest in soils amended with leaf mold, indicating that the decomposition speed was slow. Further, the addition of leaf mold to the soil enhanced the saturated/monounsaturated fatty acid ratio and cyclopropyl fatty acid/precursor ratio, which indicated an increase in environmental stresses. Application of pig manure compost (PMC) had positive effects on the population density of nematodes, and negative effects on that of oribatid mites. The population densities of nematodes, and microarthropods remained relatively low in the plots that had been treated with leaf mold or pig manure compost. It is suggested that pre-planting soil management directed at enhancing the biological decomposition efficiency should be continued over a long period to increase the soil bioactivity in virgin soils.
A clinical analysis was done on 134 cases with bronchial asthma who were admitted to the Department of Pediatrics Yeungnam University from May 1987 to October 1991. The results were as followings; 1) The peak age of bronchial asthma was under 2 years. The sex ratio of male to female was 2.9 : 1. 2) The out-break of bronchial asthma was most common in fall, especially in September. 3) The past history of other allergic diseases were present in 22.4% of patients(30/134 cases), and the previous bronchiolitis in infancy were experienced in 12.7% of patients(17/134 cases). 4) According to the skin test for allergens done by RAST, the most common allergens were Mites and House dust. 5) Eosinophilia(T.E.C>250/min) was found in 29.1% of patients, and elevated IgE level(>200 $IU/m{\ell}$) was found in 63.2% of patients. 6) No significant differences in the serum IgE level were found between male and female patients. No significant differences in the serum IgE level were found between asthma patients with and without other allergic diseases. 7) The serum IgE level of school aged patients was significant higher than that of preschool aged(p<0.01).
The comparative toxicity of recommended rates of three acaricides, fluacrypyrim, cyflumetofen and spiromesifen to the predatory mite, Neoseiulus womersleyi and its prey, Tetranychus urticae was bioassayed in the laboratory. Fluacrypyrim and cyflumetofen were much less toxic to adult females of N. womersleyi than to those of T. urticae. Adult female predators treated with these two acaricides produced $88{\sim}93%$ as many eggs as did control females. Fluacrypyrim and cyflumetofen did not affect the hatch of N. womersleyi eggs or the development of surviving immature predators, and $92{\sim}96%$ of immature predators reached adulthood. Spiromesifen at its treated concentration did not significantly affect the survival and reproduction of adult female predators but caused 100% mortality in larvae of N. womersleyi. Adult female predators survived on a diet of spider mites treated with fluacrypyrim and cyflumetofen, and their fecundity was not significantly affected. Moreover, immature predators developed normally on prey treated with these two acaricides. The results indicate that fluacrypyrim and cyflumetofen are promising candidates for use in integrated mite management programs where N womersleyi is the major natural enemy.
To predict and design of new potent insecticidal compounds, the two dimensional quantitative structure-activity relationships (2D-QSARs) and molecular hologram quantitative structure-activity relationships (HQSARs) between the various physicochemical parameters as descripters of N'-phenyl-N-methylformamidine analogues (1-22) and their insecticidal activity against the two spotted spider mite (Tetranychus urticae) were discussed quantitatively. From 2D-QSAR models (1 & 3), the width ($B_2$) of $R_3$-group as sterically factor and optimal total dipole moment (TDM=2.025D) of $R_4$-group were mainly influenced to increase the activity. Therefore, the activities were depend upon the $R_3$- and $R_4$-groups. Particularly, it is predicted that the activity of newly designed potent compound (PI; $EC_{50}$=0.516 ppm) by 2D-QSAR models (3) and HQSAR model F2 was about 34.3 fold higher than that of the commercialized insecticide, Amitraz ($EC_{50}$=17.7 ppm).
The acaricidal activities of Illicium verum fruit-derived materials against adults of Dermanyssus gallinae were examined using the direct contact application method. Based on laboratory tests, an acaricidal constituent of I. verum fruit was determined because of its potent activity. Results were compared with those of the currently used acaricides such as dichlorvos, diazinon, and carbaryl. The acaricidal principle of I. verum fruit was identified as (E)-anethole using a GC-MS. lts acaricidal activity was compared with those of 12 compounds having a similar chemical moiety. Based on the $LD_{50}$ values, the acaricidal activities of (+)-or-(-)-neomenthol were the strongest (0.01 $mg/cm^2$) and (E)-anethole, (+)-or-(-)-menthol, (${\pm}$)-isoborneol, (-)-menthone, and (lS)-endo-(-)-bomeol showed similar results (0.02 $mg/cm^2$), and (1R)-(+)-camphor and (+)-menthone also gave good activities (0.03 and 0.04 $mg/cm^2$, respectively). These compounds showed more toxic acaricidal activities than diazinon and carbaryl, 0.05 and > 0.2 $mg/cm^2$, respectively, but were not comparable to that of dichlorvos with 0.0002 $mg/cm^2$. These results indicate that the I. verum fruit-derived materials and tested compounds descried as poultry red mites-control agents could be useful for managing field populations of D. gallinae.
Dispersion pattern for adult citrus red mite (CRM), Panonychus citri (McGregor) using by Taylor's power law (TPL) and Iwao's patchiness regression (IPR) was determined to develop a monitoring method on citrus orchards, on Jeju, in Autumn season, during 2001 and 2002.CRM population was sampled by collecting leaves and fruits. The relationships of CRM adults between leaf and fruit were analyzed by different season. The regression equation for CRM adults between leaf (X) and fruit (Y) was ln(Y+1) : 1.029 ln(X+1) ( $r^2$ : 0.80). The density of CRM was higher on fruit than on leaf according to fruit maturing level. TPL provided better description of mean-variance relation-ship for the dispersion indices compared to IPR. Slopes and intercepts of TPL from leaf and fruit samples did not differ between sample units and surveyed years. Fixed-precision levels (D) of a sequential sampling plan were developed using Taylor's power law parameters generated from adults of CRM in leaf sample. Sequential sampling plans for adults of CRM were developed for decision making CRM population level based on the different action threshold levels (2.0,2.5 and 3.0 mites per leaf) with 0.25 precision. The maximum number of trees and required number of trees sampled on fixed sample size plan on 2.0,2.5 and 3.0 thresholds with 0.25 precision level were 19, 16 and 15 and their critical values T$_{critical}$ at were 554,609 and 659, respectively. were 554,609 and 659, respectively.
Anthocorid bugs (Orius spp.) are known as polyphagous predators preying on thrips, aphids, mites, eggs of small insects and whiteflies. This study was conducted to investigate the nym-phal development, survival rate, longevity of Orius sauteri adult and oviposition, when nymphs of western flower thrips (Frankliniella occidentalis) and cotton aphid (Aphis gossypii), and eggs of two-spotted spider mite (Tetranychus uritcae) were fed as diets. Nymphal development of female/male O. sauferi fed with F. occidentalis, A. gossypii and T urticae took 12.2/12.8, 13.0/l3.2, and 17.9/17.8 days at 27$^{\circ}C$, respectively, Survival rates during nymphal development were 96.4, 78.4, 73.8%, longevity of female/male adults were 55.9/51.0, 30.2/30.8, and 25.8/25.1 days, and daily oviposition were 5.6, 4.1, and 1.9 eggs, respectively. Oviposition of O. sauteri fed with F. occidentalis usually began 3-4 days after emergence at 27$^{\circ}C$, and reached at its peak of 7-8 eggs female day 20-40 days after emergence.
These experiments were conducted to investigate the life history and the seasonal fluctuation of population density of tea red spider mite, Tetranychus kanzawai Kishida and to observe its natural enemies in the southern area. Under field-cage conditions, tea red spider mite occurred 11~12 generations. The average periods from egg to adult emergence were 8.7~13.1 days in summer and 12.6~24.9 days in spring and autumn. The average longevities of adults were 15.5~21.9 days in summer and 25.1~31.6 days in spring and autumn. The average number of eggs laid per female were 45.1 in summer and 52.6 in spring and autumn. Tea red spider mite population showed two peaks during April-June, and appeared third or forth peak during October-November. The density of all the stages was the lowest in July through August. Tea red spider mites stayed at lower parts of tea plants in March but they moved to upper parts in April though June, and they again moved to lower parts after autumn. Tea red spider mite overwintered as all stages. Adults were the dominant overwintering stage during this stage. The surveyed natural enemies of the tea red spider mite were 7 species including Amblyseius longispinosus (Evans), A. eharai Amitei et Swirski, Anystis baccarun (L), Agistemus fleschneri Summers, Orius sauteri Poppius, Oligota yasumatsui Kistner and Scolothrips sp.
The hawthorn spider mite, Tetranychus viennensis, is a pest of apples and a quarantine pest from some countries that import apples from Korea. A controlled atmosphere and temperature treatment system (CATTS) was developed as an alternative disinfestation method to methyl bromide fumigation treatment, and has been applied to control various insects and other arthropod pests on fruits. We applied CATTS to disinfect T. viennensis under conditions that were previously developed to control the peach fruit moth, Carposina sasakii. First, T. viennensis was sampled from Japanese apricot, Prunus mume, and identified by its morphological characters. In addition, both cytochrome oxidase I (COI) and internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequences supported the morphological identification. Second, the heat-tolerant developmental stage was determined in T. viennensis. When a $46^{\circ}C$ heat treatment was applied to egg, nymph, and adult stages of T. viennensis, adults were the most tolerant stage. Third, when heat temperature was used along with 1% $O_2$ and 15% $CO_2$, the mites showed a significant increase in susceptibility to the heat treatment. Finally, CATTS at $46^{\circ}C$ with 15% $CO_2$ and 1% $O_2$ for 30 min resulted in 100% mortality of all T. viennensis development stages. These results indicated that CATTS isapplicable to disinfest T. viennensis in post-harvest apples.
