  • As the pest of the Letinus edoeds, five insect species and six animal species are investigated injuring the fresh mushroom. Of these, insect and animals, Achorutes armatus, Scaphidium amurense and Philomycus confusa caused severe damage to mushroom fruitbody, and a greate deal of damage was done to mushroom lamella by mites (Rhizoglyphis sp., and Histiostoma sp.). As the pest of Lentinus edodes bed logs, two insect species from immature bed logs, eight insects and one isopod species from matured bed logs were investigated. Of those, Moechotypa diphysis was found to be the most injurious species from both immature and matured bed logs. As the pest of Pleurotus ostreatus, six insects and the two mite species were investigated from sporophore. Of those, Lycoriella sp. and Mycophilla sp. are considered to be very serious. while two insects and five mite species were investigated from the mushroom bed. Of those, one insect (Lycoriella sp.) and two mites (Histiostoma feroniarum and Throglyphus bankslogior) found to be abundant and caused serious damage.

  • Monthly surveys were conducted to investigate the occurrence of chigger mites and seroprevalence of scrub typhus among small mammals in Jeollanam-do, the southwestern part of Korea, from November 2006 through October 2007. Fifty-eight small mammals, including 57 Apodemus agrarius (98.3%) and 1 Crocidura lasiura (1.7%), were captured, and a total of 4,675 chigger mites representing 4 genera and 8 species were collected from them. The chigger infestation rate among small mammals was 69.0%. The most predominant species in A. agrarius was Leptotrombidium scutellare (54.0%), followed by Leptotrombidium pallidum (39.4%), Leptotrombidium orientale (4.4%), Leptotrombidium palpale (1.1%), Neotrombicula tamiyai (0.6%), Eushoengastia koreaensis (0.3%), Neotrombicula gardellai (0.3%), and Cheladonta ikaoensis (<0.1%). The chigger index of A. agrarius was the highest in October (740.0), followed by November (242.0), September (134.6), March (98.3), February (38.2), January (35.3), December (34.5), April (30.8), and May (1.7). The average antibody positive rate of scrub typhus in wild rodents was 50.0%. The seropositive rates were high in October (100.0%) and November (83.3%), whereas those in other months were relatively low (28.6-57.1%). The chigger index of L. scutellare rapidly increased in September to form an acuminate peak in October, followed by a gradual decline. These results suggest that the outbreak of scrub typhus in the southwestern part of Korean peninsula is mostly due to L. scutellare.

  • The acaricidal activities of 12 commercial constituents derived from Eugenia caryophyllata leaf oils against Dermatophagoides farinae, D. pteronyssinus and Tyrophagus putrescentiae adults were examined using an impregnated fabric disk application and compared with that of the commercial benzyl benzoate as synthetic acaricide. On the basis of $LD_{50}$ values, the most toxic compound was methyl eugenol ($4.13\;{\mu}g/cm^2$), followed by methyl isoeugenol ($4.19\;{\mu}g/cm^2$), isoeugenol ($4.29\;{\mu}g/cm^2$), eugenol ($4.94\;{\mu}g/cm^2$), and acetyl eugenol ($13.91\;{\mu}g/cm^2$) against D. farinae. In the case of D. pteronyssinus, isoeugenol ($2.93\;{\mu}g/cm^2$) was the most toxic, followed by methyl isoeugenol ($3.28\;{\mu}g/cm^2$), methyl eugenol ($3.87\;{\mu}g/cm^2$), eugenol ($3.92\;{\mu}g/cm^2$), and acetyl eugenol ($7.21\;{\mu}g/cm^2$). These results suggest that D. pteronyssinus may be controlled more effectively by the application of eugenol congeners than D. farinae. In comparison with synthetic acaricides, the acaricidal activities of eugenol, isoeugenol, methyl eugenol, and methyl isoeugenol were about 1.9-2.2 times more toxic than benzyl benzoate. Furthermore, the most toxic constituent against T. putrescentiae was exhibited on eugenol ($10.11\;{\mu}g/cm^2$), followed by methyl eugenol ($38.67\;{\mu}g/cm^2$) and acetyl eugenol ($70.09\;{\mu}g/cm^2$), but no activity was observed for isoeugenol and methyl isoeugenol. The results suggested that eugenol congeners may be useful as a new source for selective control of house dust mites and stored food mites.

  • Ornithonyssus bacoti or so-called tropical rat mite has a wide host range which includes wild rodents and small mammals. The mite is known to bite humans and cause irritation. But the case reports are few in pet rabbits. Two Lionhead rabbits (Oryctologus cuniculus) were referred to the local animal hospital, and many mites were detected on the body. Mites were identified as O. bacoti by the scanning electron microscopical study. This communication describes the first record of pet rabbits affected with O. bacoti in Korea.

  • Yedang lake has so plentiful pondage and many species of fresh-walter-fish that a large number of people crowd around there all the year round. Most of them are not used to prevent tsutsugamushi disease spreading by chigger(T-mite). Accordingly, this study was carried out in order to obtain basic materials for prevention of this disease and the results are summarized as follows. The number of wild rat that captured in surveyed areas was sixty five(apodemus agrarius: 63, Rattus norvegicus: 2) during the period of a year and ration of captured rats to trap was about 8%. The dominant species of T-mite in all the surveyed areas were Leptotrombidium pallidum and L. palpale and the total number collected was 5782.9 with one family, two genra, eight species. The density of T-mites that collected from rats in three areas(Nodongri, Hatanbangri, Kyochonri) appeared $743.3{\pm}80.4,\;847.2{\pm}86.2\;and\;869.6{\pm}86.4,\;and\;in\;soil\;149.5{\pm}13.9,;154.7{\pm}14.7\;and\;182.4{\pm}20.8$ respectively. On the whole, the number of T-mite that collected from the rats was about three times as much as it in soil. The comparison of individual number of T-mite per a rat collected in three surveyed sites(A,B and C) showed 126.7, 243.1, 258.6 and per $2,000cm^3$ of soil 12.7, 12.7, 54.6, 103.5 respectively. In other word, the number of T-mite at site A and B is smaller than that at area C, thus comparing habitats of three sites each other, C is better living environment of rat and mite than that of A or B. Seasonl occuarance of t-mite that is from rat gradually was increased toward winter and showed the peak to January, and decreased since March but it in soil was inverse proportion to it from rats, because the larvae of T-mite that was hatched in soil was transmited to host in order to suck the body fluid.

  • We analyzed the phylogenic relationships of 23 partial 18S rDNA sequences of 22 species (1 species has 2 strains) belonging to Sarcorptiforms include 4 new sequences, using several tools. Although geographic distributions are quite far from, sequence similarity of two strains of Dermatophygoides pteronyssinus isolated from Japan and New Zealand were very high. This result suggests that mite migration by animals including human occurred in the two continents. We investigated the Endeostigmata taxonomic relationship between the Prostigmata and Oribatida subgroups using small fragments (340-400 bp) of their 185 rDNA sequences. But Endeostigmata was not grouped with Oribatida or Prostigmata. In conclusion, it is first reported phylogenic relationship for classified mites included in Sarcoptiformes using 185 rDNA sequence analysis and its system is a very powerful tool for classification of mites.

  • House dust mites produce inhalant allergens of importance to allergic patients, We measured the major group 1 allergens, Der p 1 and Der f 1, from the house dust mites Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus and Dermatophagoides farina, respectively in 100 randomly selected domestic homes from Cheonan, Korea, Dust samples were collected by vacuuming from the living room floor and 1 mattress in each home, Der p 1 and Der f 1 were measured by double mono-clonal ELISA. Der p 1 levels were very low, with geometric mean levels for floors and mattresses being $0.11\;{\mu}g/g$ (range: 0.01-4.05) and $0.14\;{\mu}g/g$ (range: 0.01-30.0), respectively. Corresponding levels of Der f 1 were higher, $7.46\;{\mu}g/g$ (range: 0.01-262.9) and $10.2\;{\mu}g/g$ (range: 0.01-230.9) for floors and mattresses, respectively. D. farinae appears to be the dominant house dust mite in Cheonan.

  • To establish the environmentally friendly biological control of two-spotted spider mites (TSSM), Tetranychus urticae, in exported strawberry greenhouses, the TSSM density reduction efficiency of chemical and biological control measures was compared in commercial, exported strawberry greenhouses. In the biological control greenhouse, only Phytoseiulus persimilis, a natural enemy of TSSM, was released, and the chemical control greenhouse was only sprayed with commercial chemical pesticides. The density of each developmental stage of TSSM was higher in the chemical control greenhouse than in the biological control greenhouse. The management costs were lower for the biological control greenhouse than the chemical control greenhouse. These results suggest that it is possible to effectively control TSSM using P. pesrsimilis in exported strawberry greenhouses.
