  • Since its launching on 21 December 1999, the Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite-I (KOMPSAT-I) has been successfully operated by the Mission Control Element (MCE), which was developed by the ETRI. Most of the major functions of the MCE have been successfully demonstrated and verified during the three years of the mission life of the satellite. This paper presents the operational performances of the various functions in MAPS. We show the performance and analysis of orbit determinations using ground-based tracking data and GPS navigation solutions. We present four instances of the orbit maneuvers that guided the spacecraft form injection orbit into the nominal on-orbit. We include the ground-based attitude determination using telemetry data and the attitude maneuvers for imaging mission. The event prediction, mission scheduling, and command planning functions in MAPS subsequently generate the spacecraft mission operations and command plan. The fuel accounting and the realtime ground track display also support the spacecraft mission operations.

  • This paper represents the analysis and design of the generic mission operations system for next generation satellite mission. In the past, mission operations systems were developed by their own mission requirements respectively. However, these systems have the similar architecture and common functions. Mission operations systems, in general, consist of mission independent module and mission specific module. In this paper, the generic framework for the mission scheduling and automation are introduced and analyzed. Using these generic frameworks, the risk and cost for operations system development can be reduced significantly. And, these frameworks might be used for the core technology in the development of mission operations system in the future.

  • Squadron crew scheduling problems can be defined as the assignment of crews to flights consistent with safety regulations and squadron policy. In this paper, the daily crew scheduling problems are formulated as zero-one interger programs known as generalized assignment problems. The objective function is to maximize the weighted mission interval to improve the crew performance. Flight schedules using the 0-1 integer model are compared with manual schedules. The results of the study show that the average crew performance is improved.

  • In this paper, we propose an efficient single-resource task scheduling algorithm for the Communication, Ocean, and Meteorological Satellite. Among general satellite planning functions such as constraint check, priority check, and task scheduling, this paper focuses on the task scheduling algorithm, which resolves conflict among tasks which have an exclusion relation and the same priority. The goal of the proposed task scheduling algorithm is to maximize the number of tasks that can be scheduled. The rationale of the algorithm is that a discarded task can be scheduled instead of a previously selected one depending on the expected benefit acquired by doing so. The evaluation results show that the proposed algorithm enhances the number of tasks that can be scheduled considerably.

  • As a multi-mission GEO satellite, Communication, Ocean, and Meteorological Satellite (COMS) is scheduled to be launched in the year 2009. COMS has three different payloads: Ka-band communication payload, Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI) and Meteorological Imager (MI). Among the three payloads, MI and GOCI have several conflict relationships; one of them is that if MI mirror moves vertically larger than 4 Line Of Sight (LOS) angle while GOCI is imaging, image quality of GOCI becomes degraded. In this paper, MI scheduling algorithm to prevent GOCI's image quality degradation will be presented.

  • Global exposure time distribution through all-sky survey, one of main science missions of KAISTSAT-1, has been simulated. Exposure time distribution has its minimum on the celestial equator and increases with moving to polar regions according to the present mission operation scenario. SAA (South Atlantic Anomaly) and the moon can make further decreases of exposure time around the celestial equator Effects of SAA on all-sky survey exposure time can be compensated with a simple observational scheduling, orbit exchange between orbits allocated to all-sky survey passing through the SAA region and ones allocated to upper atmosphere observations not affected by SAA. It, however, seems that present exposure time distribution is not adequate for the concrete study of the evolution of interstellar medium. A scheme for active time allocation is needed for redistribution of exposure times weighted around the celestial poles, and additional studies on the advanced mission operation and the observational scheduling are also needed.

  • Human and material resource planning is one representative example of Operations Research. Resource planning is important not only in civilian settings but also in military ones. In the Air Force, flight scheduling is one of the primary issues that must be addressed by the personnel who are connected to flight missions. However, although the topic is of great importance, relatively few studies have attempted to resolve the problem on a scientific basis. Each flight squadron has its own scheduling officers who manually draw up the flight schedules each day. While mistakes may not occur while drafting schedules, officers may experience difficulties in systematically adjusting to them. To increase efficiency in this context, this study proposes a mathematical model based on a binary variable. This model automatically drafts flight schedules considering pilot's mission efficiency. Furthermore, it also recommends that schedules be drawn up monthly and updated weekly, rather than being drafted from scratch each day. This will enable easier control when taking the various relevant factors into account. The model incorporates several parameters, such as matching of the main pilots and co-pilots, turn around time, availability of pilots and aircraft, monthly requirements of each flight mission, and maximum/minimum number of sorties that would be flown per week. The optimal solution to this model demonstrated an average improvement of nearly 47% compared with other feasible solutions.

  • AESA radar is able to instantaneously and adaptively position and control the beam, and such adaptive beam pointing of AESA radar enables to remarkably improve the multi-mission capability. For this reason, Radar Resource Management(RRM) becomes new challenging issue. RRM is a technique efficiently allocating finite resources, such as energy and time to each task in an optimal and intelligent way. Especially radar beam scheduling is the most critical component for the success of RRM. In this paper, we proposed a rule-based scheduling algorithm and Simulated Annealing(SA) based scheduling algorithm, which are alternatively selected and applied to beam scheduler according radar load status in real-time. The performance of the proposed algorithm was evaluated on the multi-function radar scenario. As a result, we showed that our proposed algorithm can process a lot of beams at the right time with real time capability, compared with applying only rule-based scheduling algorithm. Additionally, we showed that the proposed algorithm can save scheduling time remarkably, compared with applying only SA-based scheduling algorithm.
