  • This work describes the possibility of ABL(Airborne Laser) applications to the Korean missile defense. The missile defense system is the multilayered defense system that consists of shooters, sensors and BM/C4I. The ABL is the missile defense system of boost phase. It is placing a high energy, megawatt class chemical oxygen iodine laser and highly sophisticated beam control/fire control and battle management systems on a modified Boeing 747-400F aircraft to detect, track and destroy ballistic missiles in their boost phase of flight. This work analysis the ballistic missile's threat of North Korea and the flight trajectory for the SCUD missile that is cut-off by the ABL. From this analysis the possibility of the ABL applications to the Korean missile defense is presented.

  • The United States has deployed and operates a ballistic missile defense system to defend the homeland from ballistic missile attacks launched from direct and potential threats. The Missile Defense Agency has deployed the Aegis BMDs, Sea-based X-band radars(SBX), Ground-Based Interceptors(GBI), Early Warning Radars and THAADs. In addition, the Homeland Defense Radar-Hawaii(HDR-H) will be deployed in Hawaii. The HDR-H is expected to improve defensive ability to ballistic missile threats in the Asia-Pacific region.

  • In this paper, flyout stability of missile that is launched in inclined launcher using sabots is analyzed. To include missile bending motion during flyout, FEA model of missile is converted into eight concentrated mass and equivalent stiffness matrix. Six d.o.f ship motion that have influence on flyout stability is modeled and missile firing time is modeled as probability variable to take arbitrary ship attitude into account. Gap between missile and sabot is modeled as normal distribution probability variable and Monte Carlo simulation is performed. As results, the coriolis acceleration effects by ship motion are analyed and statistical results of missile pitch rate are shown.

  • Trajectory of ballistic missile is defined by inherent flight dynamics, which decided range and maneuvering characteristics. It is crucial to predict range and maneuvering characteristics of ballistic missile in KAMD (Korea Air and Missile Defense) to minimize damage due to ballistic missile attacks, Nowadays, needs for applying AI(Artificial Intelligence) technologies are increasing due to rapid developments of DNN(Deep Neural Networks) technologies. To apply these DNN technologies amount of data are required for superviesed learning, but trajectory data of ballistic missiles is limited because of security issues. Trajectory data could be considered as multivariate time series including many variables. And augmentation in time series data is a developing area of research. In this paper, we tried to augment trajectory data of ballistic missiles using recently developed methods. We used TimeVAE(Time Variational AutoEncoder) method and TimeGAN(Time Generative Adversarial Networks) to synthesize missile trajectory data. We also compare the results of two methods and analyse for future works.

  • An Emergency Destruction System is inevitable for ensuring safety both at sea and in populated areas, particularly during emergency detonations triggered by abnormal missile flight or upon mission completion. This paper introduces a novel method for developing an Emergency Destruction System capable of precisely calculating the Instantaneous Impact Point(IIP) during high-speed, maneuverable long-range surface-to-air missile flight tests. The Emergency Destruction System designed for long-range surface-to-air missile flight tests generates impact position tables that meticulously incorporate wind errors and navigation equations based on the Earth's ellipsoidal model. Factors such as the Coriolis effect and the direction of the gravitational acceleration vector are accounted for, significantly enhancing the accuracy of IIP determination amidst highly variable missile speed and attitude.

  • In this paper, the electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) test standard is described, and the purpose and test configuration for the electromagnetic susceptibility (EMS) test of the missile component and the missile system are confirmed. The test configuration and specifications are suggested by the configuration of the missile component and the missile system based on the US military standards MIL-STD-461F and MIL-STD-464C, and explained that the ungrounded state, the final operating state of the missile component and the missile system, was constructed. In addition, the methods for checking the steady state and the points to be considered during the immunity test were introduced.

  • In this paper, a design method of a missile guidance command is presented considering the dynamics of missile control systems. The design of a new guidance command is based on the well-known PNG(propotional navigation guidance) laws. The missile control system dynamics cause the time-delays of the PN guidance command and degrade the performance of original guidance laws which are designed under the assumption of the ideal missile control systems. Using a backstepping method, these time-delay effects can be compensated. In order to implement the guidance command developed by the backstepping procedure, it is required to measure or calculate the successive time-derivatives of the original guidance command, PNG and other kinematic variables such as the relative distance. Instead of directly using the measurements of these variables and their successive derivatives, a simple disturbance observer technique is employed to estimate a guidance command described by them. Using Lyapunov method, the performance of a newly developed guidance command is analyzed against a target maneuvering with a bounded and time-varying acceleration.

  • A Captive Flight Test(CFT) is used to verify the performance of missile component such as seeker and guiding algorithm of missile. Recently most of surface to air missile adapts multi-mode guidance method which include command guidance and active/passive guidance. A CFT system for missile system adapting multi-mode guidance method consists of pod equipment, command transmitting system and measuring system. In this paper, we proposed CFT system and testing method for missile which adapt multi-mode guidance, and system integration procedure by using distributed missile system integration method and procedure. The proposed CFT system and system integration method was applied to CFT of surface to air missile, and brought successful result.

  • Since V-2, the first ballistic missile was developed during world war II, ballistic missile threat is increasing consistently due to science technology progress. United States is constructing and operating BMDS(Ballistic Missile Defense System) to defend homeland and allies. Various Interceptors will try intercept ballistic missile detected by sensors at boost phase, midcourse phase or terminal phase. THAAD(Terminal High Altitude Area Defense) is intercept system that intercept ballistic missile at high altitude of terminal phase. In this paper, concept of U.S. BMDS, and operational and technical characteristics of THAAD is surveyed and described.
