  • Adaptive optics (AO) has been applied in various fields including astronomy, ophthalmology and high power laser systems. An adaptive optics system for a high power laser is not significantly different from other AO systems in the point of configuration except that high energy absorbed by the deformable mirror distorts the deformable mirror surface and so degrades system performance. Currently we are researching a bimorph deformable mirror for beam cleaning of a high power class laser. The bimorph mirror was considered to have 99% reflective coating and 1% absorption. So this paper first presents the temperature profiles and corresponding thermal distortions of the bimorph mirror faceplate when the mirror is under a high power lasing for 10 seconds. The analysis was accomplished by the use of finite difference and finite element computer programs to generate the element arrays, calculate the temperature profiles, and determine the structural deformations. Then this paper proposes an 'embedded wafer' type water-cooling system with derived cooling parameters.

  • In this paper, we study a topological mirror symmetry on noncommutative complex tori. We show that deformation quantization of an elliptic curve is mirror symmetric to an irrational rotation algebra. From this, we conclude that a mirror reflection of a noncommutative complex torus is an elliptic curve equipped with a Kronecker foliation.

  • Polishchuk-Zaslow explained the homological mirror symmetry between Fukaya category of symplectic torus and the derived category of coherent sheaves of elliptic curves via Lagrangian torus fibration. Recently, Cho-Hong-Lau found another proof of homological mirror symmetry using localized mirror functor, whose target category is given by graded matrix factorizations. We find an explicit relation between these two approaches.

  • In this paper, we consider the problem of finding the depth of a object in two images taken with cameras. For solving this problem, we introduce a spherical concave mirror model. First, a virtual concave mirror is assumed, and then a scene is obtained by camera at two different position which are on the surface of the mirror. The depth of object is calculated from two scenes by using the spherical-mirror equation. The algorithm has been tested on a real scene containing several objects, and showed that it is more useful for farther object.

  • Polygon Mirror Scanning(PMS) is composed of LED array, magnifying lens, polygon mirror and motor. It is important to correct the lens aberrations to gain the image we want to show. In this paper, we have simulated the lens aberration correction to reduce the spherical aberration . We have obtained a aspherical lens which is corrected the spherical aberration.

  • A study on the topology optimization of a multi-spectral camera for space-use is presented. The optimization is carried out under self-weight and polishing pressure loading. A multi-spectral camera for space-use experiences degradation of optical image in the space, which can not be detected on the optical test bench on the earth. An optical surface deformation of a primary mirror, which is a principal component of the camera system, is an important factor affecting the optical performance of the whole camera system. In this study, topology optimization of the primary mirror of the camera is presented. As an objective function, a measure of Strehl ratio is used. Total mass of the primary mirror is given as a constraint to the optimization problem. The sensitivities of the objective function and constraint are calculated by direct differentiation method. Optimization procedure is carried out by an optimality criteria method. For the light-weight primary mirror design, a three dimensional model is treated. As a preliminary example, topology optimization considering a self-weight loading is treated. In the second example, the polishing pressure is also included as a loading in the topology optimization of the mirror. Results of the optimized design topology for the mirror with various mass constraints are presented.

  • A Magneto-Optical Trap (MOT) for $^{87}Rb$ atoms near the surface of a dielectric coated mirror at the top of a small $20{\times}25{\times}40\;mm^3$ cell has been observed. Two beams of $3.3\;mW/cm^2$ were used for optical cooling and an anti-Helmholtz magnetic field with a spatial gradient of 9.1 G/cm was used for magnetic trapping. The thickness of the mirror coated on a cover glass was less than $100{\mu}m$. The mirror covered the top of a cell and the atom-chip was located outside the vacuum in order to exploit the long life time of the mirror and easy operation of the chip. The trapping position was found 5 mm beneath the mirror surface. The number of trapped atoms was roughly $3{\times}10^7$ atoms and the temperature was approximately a few tens mK. In this paper, we describe the construction of the mirror-MOT in detail.

  • PURPOSE: The present study aims to determine the effect of lower extremity muscle strength exercise at the non-paralyzed side of patients of stroke using a mirror on gait and balance. METHODS: Subjects were assigned randomly to a group of lower extremity exercise without using a mirror (n=10), a group of lower extremity motion exercise using a mirror (n=10), and a group of lower extremity muscle strength exercise using a mirror (n=10). The exercise is added to a physiotherapy program conducted at the hospital and subjects conducted their designed lower extremity exercises 30 times a day (5 sets), five days per week for four weeks. RESULTS: The study result showed that BBS(Berg balance scale)(p<.05) and TUG(timed up and go test)(p<.05) had a significant difference. In the comparison on gait ability, stride length, step length, step width and single support was a significant difference within two groups using a mirror before and after the intervention(p<.05). CONCLUSION: Conclusively, low extremity motion exercise using a mirror and low extremity muscle strength exercise using a mirror conducted along with general physiotherapy exercises had a positive effect on functions of lower extremity in patients with stroke and the recovery of paralyzed side thereby incurring a significant difference in balance and gait abilities.
