  • Recently, the plastic resin such as PC, ABS are widely used in IT market. Especially, in most cases the keypads mounted on the mobile phone are the dual-injection-plated type. Environmental regulation is based on the quality of injection-molded products and the minimum process steps are required to avoid the plating defects. Various parameters to produce the injection-molded plastic products make it difficult to obtain the desired stability. However, the past experience and the use of CAE analysis make it possible to predict the problems occurred in injection molding process. Especially, the problems of the weld lines such as runner balancing, bending, deformation and forming defects can be solved systematically and minimized by CAE analysis. Through this study, the non-uniform volumetric shrinkage and the difference in temperature distribution induce the deformation and the high value of stress causes the problems such as crack.

  • In urban areas, new tunnel construction work is often taking place adjacent to existing piled foundations. In this case, careful assessment for the pile-soil-tunnel interaction is required. However, research on this topic has not been much reported, and currently only limited information is available. In this study, the complex pile-soil-tunnel interaction is investigated using the upper and lower bound methods based on kinematically possible failure mechanism and statically admissible stress field respectively. It is believed that the limit theorem is useful in understanding the complicated interaction behaviour mechanism and applicable to the pile-soil-tunnel interaction problem. The results are compared with numerical analysis. The material deformation patterns and strain data from the FE output are shown to compare well with the equivalent physical model tests. Admissible stress fields and the failure mechanisms are presented and used to develop upper and lower bound solutions to assess minimum support pressures within the tunnel.

  • PPM (Performance Prediction Methodology) developed by EPRI was introduced and applied to calculate the stem thrust of 3 and 4 inches flexible-wedge gate valves. The calculated stem thrusts of open and close strokes including cracking were compared with the results measured at in-situ differential pressure tests. The comparison has shown that PPM is an extremely conservative method to predict the minimum required stem thrust to operate motor-operated valves in a design basis accident condition of nuclear power plants.

  • Among many other alternative energy resources, small scale hydro power has been brought into attention as a reliable source of energy today, which had been relatively neglected since 1960s. Especially, Kaplan micro-turbine can be applied to various kind of small hydro power plants, such as reservoirs for agriculture purpose, sewage treatment plants and water purification plants. However present low head of Kaplan micro-turbines and small scale hydro turbines, have limitations in the minimum required head and flow rate for efficient operation. This research is to develop modeling analysis for the Kaplan micro-turbine, which can improve economical features of small hydro power plants. The contents and scope of this research are the efficiency improvement of Kaplan micro-turbine.

  • The brine and seawater are important and largely untapped sources of critical trace metals and elements. The coupling of selective recovery of trace metals from seawater/brine with desalination plants gives an added advantage of energy credits to desalination plants and as well as reduce the cost of desalinated water. In this paper, status review on recovery of important trace metals and other alkali metals from seawater is presented. The potential of Indian desalination plants for recovery of trace metals, based on recovery ratio of 0.35 is also highlighted. Studies carried out by the process based on adsorption using Radiation Induced Grafted (RIG) polymeric adsorbents and then fractional elutions are presented. The fouling factors due to bio fouling and dirt fouling have been estimated for various locations of interest through field trails. The pay loader in the form of compact Contactor Assembly with minimum pressure drop, for loading specially designed radiation grafted sorbent in leaflet form has been briefed, as required for plant scale facility. The typical conceptual process design details of farm assembly of project CRUDE are described.

  • The probability of lethality of personnel targets inside a room is a key issue at assessing effectiveness of a weapon system. In this study, the minimum charge weight to achieve 100% lethality of personnel targets inside a box-type room is proposed at each side length of a base of a room. A fast running blast wave model is used to simulate the pressure-time histories of the blast generated by an internal explosion inside a room, and Axelsson SP method is used to evaluate the lethality of personnel targets under the blast. 176 different internal explosion scenarios are simulated for cases of TNT weights ranging from 20kg to 170kg inside a room whose square base has a side length ranging from 5m to 15m. A linear model and a charge-density model were developed to predict the minimum charge weight to achieve 100% lethality inside a room given a length of a base of a room.

  • Ensuring safety in the designing of manufacturing and handling facilities for low-density polyethylene (LDPE) is difficult because there are no standards for the dust explosion characteristics of LDPE. In this study, a dust explosion test was performed on two dust samples collected from a bag filter (LDPE 1) during the LDPE manufacturing process and sedimentary dust (LDPE 2) leaked outside a facility such as a silo, and the LDPE 2 explosion test results were summarized. Particle size analysis showed that the volume-based particle diameter (median) was 95.04 ㎛ and the number density was 0-1 ㎛. The maximum explosion pressure (Pmax) was 6.6 bar, and the maximum rate of explosion pressure rise was 366 [bar/s] at 1500 g/m3. Accordingly, the dust explosion index (Kst) was 99.4 bar·m/s, which was confirmed as ST-1 grade. Moreover, the minimum ignition energy and minimum ignition temperature was 10 mJ and 450 ℃, respectively. Currently, manufacturing and handling design is based on the characteristic values of high-density polyethylene (HDPE). However, as the test results show that LDPE 2 dust has a higher risk than HDPE (particle diameter 61.6 ㎛), caution is required when using the HDPE design criteria in the LDPE manufacturing process.

  • In this study, ways to reduce the edge pressure at the bottom plate of the caisson breakwater were considered. The water depth, freeboard, design wave height and period, and the location of the center of gravity on the super-structure of the breakwater were selected as key design variables that influence the edge pressure, and analyzed how the edge pressure changes according to the change of this key variables. The pressure distribution formulae suggested in the design standard was applied for the calculation of design wave forces. Based on the wave forces, the required effective self-weight of the super-structure and the minimum width of the caisson were determined to have a safety factor of 1.2 against sliding and overturning. From the results, it was found that the edge pressure rapidly increased as the water depth increased, and could exceed the allowable bearing capacity when it reached a certain water depth which is 20 m within the analysis conditions. It was also confirmed that the edge pressure gradually increased linearly as the freeboard increased, but decreased with the increase of the wave height and period. This edge pressure could be significantly reduced up to more than 20% by moving the center of gravity of the super-structure to the seaside, which is 5% of the caisson width. Based on the analysis results and the recently conducted research results, a method was proposed to reduce the edge pressure that can be used in the design.

  • This study was to evaluate the effects of tramadol and medetomidine administration on minimum alveolar concentration (MAC) of isoflurane in dogs. MAC of isoflurane was determined in four occasions; 1 ml saline (Control), $2{\mu}g$/kg medetomidine (M2), 4 mg/kg tramadol (T4), $2{\mu}g$/kg medetomidine-4 mg/kg tramadol combination (M2T4). Heart rate, blood pressure, respiratory rate, end-tidal carbon dioxide concentration, saturation of hemoglobin with oxygen and body temperature were recorded. After administration of M2 ($0.81{\times}0.18%$), T4 ($0.81{\times}0.14%$) and M2T4 ($0.62{\times}0.12%$), less isoflurane was required than the control value ($1.13{\times}0.19%$). Significantly lower heart rate than the control value was detected after treatment of M2, T4, and M2T4. When only M2T4 was administered, blood pressure was significantly higher than the control value. In conclusion, administrations of tramadol, medetomidine and medetomidine-tramadol combination decreased the MAC of isoflurane in dogs. Especially, medetomidine-tramadol combinations could be useful as a premedication because of the anesthetic sparing effect and moderate changes in cardiovascular system.

  • This study analyzed the effect of zoning on the distribution of pressure differentials caused by stack effect and air pressurization in a center core type of 80 story super-tall building. The results showed that maximum pressure difference more than 250 Pa can be generated by stack effect without zoning. Zoning of stairwell only resulted in 10 Pa reduction of maximum pressure difference, however, zoning of both stairwell and EV shaft especially at the same floor revealed 50 % reduction in stack effect. It was also analysed that the minimum required air flow rate occurred when the stairwell temperature reached 50 % of temperature difference between indoor and outdoor.
