  • The continuous increase of emission rates of green house gases and the effects on global warming added a new dimension to the problem of substituting the petroleum and its derivatives by environment friendly and sustainable energy sources for the world. Solar and wind energy appear at the top of the list of renewable of high potential, widely available, of dominated technology and well accepted. Brazil is one of the few countries in the world that receives number hours of sunshine exceeding 3,000 hours per year with a daily average of 4.5 to 6 kWh. However, this potential is largely unexplored and poorly tapped. The number of renewable systems implanted in Brazil has grown in recent years, but still insignificant when compared, for example, with Germany and Spain among others. This paper presents the results of an optical study on small concentration solar collector with evacuated tube enveloping the absorber and internal reflective surface fixed on the bottom part of the evacuated tube. The designed collector has a 2D geometrical concentration ratio between 2.455 and 4.91. The orientation of the solar collector, the ratio of the radius of the receiver to the radius of the absorber, the incidence angle for each period of the year, the collector inclination angle, the aperture angle of the reflective surface, concentration and optical efficiency were determined. The ray traces and flux distribution on the absorber of the evacuated tube solar collector were determined by using the program Ray Optics Simulation. The optical efficiency varies during the year according to the solar declination. For the periods were the solar declination is close to zero the efficiencies are maximum, and the variation during the day is around 25.88% and 99.9%. For the periods were the solar declination is maximum the efficiencies are minimum, and the variation during the day is around 23.78% and 91.79%.

  • The Frictional behavior in single crystal (111) p-type silicon as influenced by electolytic solutions have been studied. Linear scratching by diamond indentor was carried out to show the variation of friction between silicon and diamond indentor immersed in electrolytic solutions. The results indicate that concentration of the solutions influence the fricational coefficient. In addition there is a correlation between measured zeta-potential and frictional coefficients. The zeta-potential in various concentrations was measured to estimate the variation of the Peierls energy. The proposed model predicts a minimum frictional coefficient near a concentration of $10^{-3}$ M/l NaOH in deionized water and explains the chemomechanical effect observed in this study.

  • This paper presents a hypothesis and its experimental validation that ∆E (Esec, corr - Ecorr) of cyclic polarization curve of an Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy decreases firstly and then increases with the increasing of corrosion rate or corroded fraction Fcorr of alloy surface. The minimum value of ∆E is obtained when Fcorr ≈ 50%. In addition, a proportional relationship between ∆E and |50% - Fcorr| was found. This non-monotonic relation between ∆E and extent of localized corrosion indicates that additional attention should be paid on using ∆E to assess localized corrosion behaviour of Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloys.

  • Molecular structures and chemical properties of 1-aminoimidazole derivatives have been investigated at high levels of density functional theories. Heat of formation, density, explosive performances and impact sensitivities have been estimated at the global minimum of potential energy surface. As more nitro groups are introduced, the explosive performances of 1-aminoimidazole derivatives are enhanced, while the impact sensitivity becomes more sensitive. A two-dimensional plot between explosive performance and impact sensitivity has been utilized to comprehend the technical status of new explosive candidates. Based on locations in the two-dimensional plot, 1-aminodinitroimidzole isomers appears to have a potential to be good candidates for insensitive explosives, and 1-aminotrinitroimidazole may become a powerful explosive molecule whose behavior is quite close to HMX.

  • In this study we derive the governing equations of a functionally graded piezoelectric disk, subjected to thermo-electro-mechanical loads. First order shear deformation theory is used for description of displacement field. Principles of minimum potential energy is used to derive governing equations in terms of components of the displacement field and the electric potential. The governing equations are derived for a disk with variable thickness. The numerical results are presented in terms of important parameters of the problem such as profile of variable thickness, in-homogeneous index and other related parameters.

  • In the present study, the nonlocal strain gradient theory is used to predict the size-dependent buckling and post-buckling behavior of geometrically imperfect nano-scale piezo-flexomagnetic plate strips in two modes of direct and converse flexomagnetic effects. The first-order shear deformation plate theory is used to analyze analytically nano-strips with simply supported boundary conditions. The nonlinear governing equations of equilibrium and associated boundary conditions are derived using the principle of minimum total potential energy with consideration of the von Kármán-type of geometric nonlinearity. A closed-form solution of governing differential equation is obtained, which is easily usable for engineers and designers. To validate the presented formulations, whenever possible, a comparison with the results found in the open literature is reported for buckling loads. A parametric study is presented to examine the effect of scaling parameters, plate slenderness ratio, temperature, the mid-plane initial rise, flexomagnetic coefficient, different temperature distributions, and magnetic potential, in case of the converse flexomagnetic effect, on buckling and post-buckling loads in detail.

  • The detailed structure of a tidal front and its ebb-to flood variation in the main tidal channel of the Kyunggi Bay in the mid-west coast of Korea were investigated by analyzing CTD data and drifter trajectories collected in late July 1999. A typical tidal front was formed in water about 60 m deep at the mouth of the channel. Isotherms and isohalines in the upper layer above the seasonal pycnocline in the offshore stratified zone inclined upward to the sea surface to form a surface front, while those in the lower layer declined to the bottom front. The location of the front is consistent with $100 S^3/cm^2$ of the mixing index H/U defined by Simpson and Hunter (1974), where H is the water depth and U is the amplitude of tidal current. The potential energy anomaly in the frontal zone varied at an ebb-to flood tidal cycle, showing a minimum at slack water after ebb but a maximum at slack water after flood. This ebb-to flood variation in potential energy anomaly is not accounted for by the mixing index. We conclude that on- and offshore displacement of the water column by tidal advection is responsible for the ebb-to-flood variation in the frontal zone.

  • Effect of interfacial electrical conditions such as, the f potential of PET fiber and u-Fe203 particles, the stability parameter and potential energy of interaction on adhesion of a-Fe903 particles to PET fabric and their removal from the fabric, were investigated as functions of pH, electrolyte and ionic strength. The stability parameter, potential energy of interaction between a-Fe2O3 particles and PET fabric were calculated by using the heterocoagulation theory for a sphere-plate model The adhesion of a-Fe2O3 particles to PET fabric and their removal from PET fabric were carried out by using water bath shaker and Terg-O-Tometer under various solution conditions. The adhesion of a-Fe2O3 particles to the PET fabric and the removal of a-Fe2O3 particles from the PET fabric were biphasic and were maximum and minimum at pH 7~8, respectively. With high pH and polyanion electrolytes in solution, the adhesion of a-Fe2O3 particles to the PET fabric was low but effects of electrolytes on the removal of a-Fe2O3 particles from the PET fabric was small. The adhesion of a-Fe2O3 particles to the PET fabric and the removal of a-Fe2O3 Particles from the PET fabric were biphasic, and were lowest and highest at the ionic strength 1$\times$10-3, respectively. The adhesion of a-Fe2O3 particles to PET fabric was well related with the interfacial electrical conditions; it was negatively correlated with the f potentials of a-Fe2O3 Particles of its absolute value, the stability parameter and the maximum of total potential energy, while, the adhesion was not related with the t potentials of PET fiber itself. Therefore, the primary factor determining the adhesion of a-Fe203 particles to PET fabric may be the stability of dispersed particles caused by the electrical repulsion of particles. The removal of a-Fe203 particles from PET fabric was not related to such interfacial electrical conditions as the t potentials of PET fiber, the stability parameter and the maximum of total potential energy but removal was related to t potential of a-Fe203 particles.

  • Detailed analysis of Feedwater Line Break (FLB) event for the fuel failure point of view are lack because the event was characterized as the increase in reactor coolant system (RCS) pressure. Up to now, the potential of the rapid system heatup case has been emphasized and comprehensively studied. The cooldown effects of FLB event is considered to be bounded by the Steam Line Break (SLB) event since the cooldown effect of SLB event is larger than that of the FLB event. This analysis provides a new possible path which can cause the fuel failure. The new path means that the fuel failure can occur under the heatup scenario because the Pressurizer Safety Valves (PSVs) open before the reactor trips. The 1000 MWe typical C-E plant FLB event assuming Loss of Offsite Power (LOOP) at the turbine trip has been analyzed as an example and the results show less than 1% of the fuel failure. The result is well within the acceptance criteria. In addition to that, a study was accomplished to prevent the fuel failure for the heatup scenario case as an example. It is found that giving the proper pressure gap between High Pressurizer Pressure Trip (HPPT) analysis setpoint and the minimum PSV opening pressure could prevent the fuel failure.
