This paper presents an power system optimization method which solves real and reactive power dispatch problems using evolutionary computation such as genetic algorithms(GAs), evolutionary programming(EP), and evolution strategy(ES). Many conventional methods to this problem have been proposed in the past, but most these approaches have the common defect of being caught to a local minimum solution. Recently, global search methods such as GAs, EP, and ES are introduced. The proposed methods, applied to the IEEE 30-bus system, were run for 12 other exogenous parameters. Each simulation result, by which evolutionary computations are compared and analyzed, shows the possibility of applications of evolutionary computation to large scale power systems.
This paper deals with minimizing layout area of FPGA design. FPGAs are becoming increasingly important in the design of ASICs since they provide both large scale integration and user-programmability. This paper describes a method to obtain tight bound on the worst-case increase in area when drivers are introduced along many long wires in a layout. The area occupied by minimum-area embedding for a circuit can depend on the aspect ratio of the bounding rectangle of the layout. This paper presents a separator-based area-optimal embeddings for FPGA graphs in rectangles of several aspect ratios which solves the longest path problem in the constraint graph.
Objective: To investigate whether the Minimal Clinically Important Difference (MCID) clinically defines improvement of Berg Balance Scale (BBS) scores in people with acute stroke in response to rehabilitation. Design: Retrospective study. Methods: Seventy-three participants with acute stroke participated in the study. Balance evaluation was performed using the BBS. All patients received rehabilitation with physical therapy for 4 weeks, 5 times a week, for 2 hours and 20 minutes a day. An anchor-based approach using the clinical global impression was used to determine the MCID of the BBS. The MCID was used to define the minimum change in the BBS total score (postintervention-preintervention) that was needed to perceive at least a 3-point improvement on the global rating of change. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves was used to define the cut-off values of the optimal MCID of the BBS in order to discriminate between improvement and no improvement groups. Results: The optimal MCID cut-off point for the BBS change scores was 12.5 points for males with a sensitivity (Sn) of 0.62 and a specificity (Sp) of 0.89, and 12.5 points for females with a Sn of 0.69 and Sp of 0.85. The area under the curve of the ROC curve for all participants were 0.84 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.72; 0.95, p<0.001), and 0.89 (95% CI, 0.77; 1.00, p<0.001), respectively. Conclusions: The MCID for improvement in balance as measured by the BBS was 13.5 points, indicating that the MCID does clinically detect changes in balance abilities in persons with stroke.

AAM(Active Appearance Model) is one of the most effective ways to detect deformable 2D objects and is a kind of mathematical optimization methods. The cost function is a convex function because it is a least-square function, but the search space is not convex space so it is not guaranteed that a local minimum is the optimal solution. That is, if the initial value does not depart from around the global minimum, it converges to a local minimum, so it is difficult to detect face contour correctly. In this study, an AAM-based face tracking algorithm is proposed, which is robust to various lighting conditions and backgrounds. Eye detection is performed using SIFT and Genetic algorithm, the information of eye are used for AAM's initial matching information. Through experiments, it is verified that the proposed AAM-based face tracking method is more robust with respect to pose and background of face than the conventional basic AAM-based face tracking method.

The purpose of this study is to estimate overall reliability and applicability of the watershed modeling for systematic management of point and non-point sources via water quality analysis and prediction of runoff discharge within watershed. Recently, runoff characteristics and pollutant characteristics have been changing in watershed by anomaly climate and urbanization. In this study, the effects of watershed scale were analyzed in runoff and water quality modeling using HSPF. In case of correlation coefficient, its range was from 0.936 to 0.984 in case A(divided - 2 small watersheds). On the other hand, its range was form 0.840 to 0.899 in case B(united - 1 watershed). In case of Nash-Sutcliffe coefficient, its range was from 0.718 to 0.966 in case A. On the other hand, its range was from 0.441 to 0.683 in case B. As a result, it was judged that case A was more accurate than case B. Therefore, runoff and water quality modeling in minimum watershed scale that was provided data for calibration and verification was judged to be favorable in accuracy. If optimal watershed dividing and parameter optimization using PEST in HSPF with more reliable measured data are carried out, more accurate runoff and water quality modeling will be performed.

This paper introduces a heuristic algorithm to NP-hard travelling salesman problem. The proposed algorithm, in its bid to determine initial path, applies SW-DNN, DW-DNN, and DC-DNN, which are modified forms of the prevalent Double-sided Nearest Neighbor Search and searches the minimum value. As a part of its optimization process on the initial solution, it employs 2, 2.5, 3-opt of a local search k-opt on candidate delete edges and 4-opt on undeleted ones among them. When tested on TSP-1 of 26 European cities and TSP-2 of 49 U.S. cities, the proposed algorithm has successfully obtained optimal results in both, disproving the prevalent disbelief in the attainability of the optimal solution and making itself available as a general algorithm for the travelling salesman problem.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the key factors in designing a three-wheeled two-row soybean reaper (riding type) that is suitable for soybean production, and ensure worker safety by proposing optimal work conditions for the prototype of the designed machine in relation to the slope of the road. Methods: A three-wheeled two-row soybean reaper (riding type) was designed and its prototype was fabricated based on the local soybean-production approach. This approach was considered to be closely related to the prototype-designing of the cutter and the wheel driving system of the reaper. Load distribution on the wheels of the prototype, its minimum turning radius, static lateral overturning angle, tilt angle during driving, and The working and rear overturning (back flip) angle were measured. Based on the gathered information, investigations were conducted regarding optimal work conditions for the prototype. The investigations took into account driving stability and worker safety. Results: The minimum ground clearance of the prototype was 0.5 m. The blade height of the prototype was adjusted such that the cutter was operated in line with the height of the ridges. The load distribution on the prototype's wheels was found to be 1 (front wheel: F): 1.35 (rear-left wheel: RL): 1.43 (rear-right wheel: RR). With the ratio of load distribution between the RL and RR wheels being 1: 1.05, the left-to-right lateral loads were found to be well-balanced. The minimum turning radius of the prototype was 2.0 m. Such a small turning radius was considered to be beneficial for cutting work on small-scale fields. The sliding of the prototype started at $25^{\circ}$, and its lateral overturning started at $39.3^{\circ}$. Further, the critical slope angle for the worker to drive the prototype in the direction of the contour line on an incline was found to be $12.8^{\circ}$, and the safe angle of slope for the cutting was measured to be less than $6^{\circ}$. The critical angle of slope that allowed for work was found to be $10^{\circ}$, at which point the prototype would overturn backward when given impact forces of 1,060 N on its front wheel. Conclusions: It was determined that farmers using the prototype would be able to work safely in most soybean production areas, provided that they complied with safe working conditions during driving and cutting.

The current paper proposes a new vertex selection scheme for polygon-based contour coding. To efficiently characterize the shape of an object, we incorporate the curvature information in addition to the conventional maximum distance criterion in vertex selection process. The proposed method consists of "two-step procedure." At first, contour pixels of high curvature value are selected as key vortices based on the curvature scale space (CSS), thereby dividing an overall contour into several contour-segments. Each segment is considered as an open contour whose end points are two consecutive key vortices and is processed independently. In the second step, vertices for each contour segment are selected using progressive vertex selection (PVS) method in order to obtain minimum number of vertices under the given maximum distance criterion ( $D_{max}$$^{*}$). Furthermore, the obtained vortices are adjusted using the dynamic programming (DP) technique to optimal positions in the error area sense. Experimental results are presented to compare the approximation performances of the proposed and conventional methods.imation performances of the proposed and conventional methods.

In this paper a heuristic method for identifying individual pipes in water pipe networks to determine specific sections of the pipes that need to be replaced due to deterioration. An appropriate minimum pipe length is determined by selecting the pipe length that has the greatest variance of the average cumulative break number slopes among the various pipe lengths used. As a result, the minimum pipe length for the case study water network is determined as 4 m and a total of 39 individual pipe IDs are obtained. The economically optimal replacement times of the individual pipe IDs are estimated by using the threshold break rate of an individual pipe ID and the pipe break trends models for which the General Pipe Break Prediction Model(Park and Loganathan, 2002) that can incorporate the linear, exponential, and in-between of the linear and exponetial failure trends and the ROCOFs based on the modified time scale(Park et al., 2007) are used. The maximum log-likelihoods of the log-linear ROCOF and Weibull ROCOF estimated for the break data of a pipe are compared and the ROCOF that has a greater likelihood is selected for the pipe of interest. The effects of the social costs of a pipe break on the optimal replacement time are also discussed.
A pilot-scale pulse-jet bagfilter was designed, built and tested for the effects of four operating conditions (filtration velocity, inlet dust concentration, pulse pressure, and pulse interval time) on the total system pressure drop, using coke dust from a steel mill factory. Two models were used to predict the total pressure drop according to the operating conditions. These model parameters were estimated from the 180 experimental data points. The empirical model (EM) with filtration velocity, areal density, inlet dust concentration, pulse interval time and pulse pressure shows the best correlation coefficient (R=0.971) between experimental data and model predictions. The empirical model was used as it showed higher correlation coefficient (R=0.971) compared to that of the Multivariate linear regression(MLR) (R=0.961). The minimum pulse pressure predicted by empirical model (EM) was 5kg/$cm^2$.
