  • Design low flows were derived from the decision of a best fitting probability distribution and of an optimum transformation method can be contributed to the planning of water utilization and management of various hydraulic structures during dry season in the main river systems in Korea. The results were analyzed and summarized as follows. 1.Basic statistics for the selected watersheds were calculated as one of means for the analysis of extremal distribution. 2.Parameters for the different frequency distributions were calculated by the method of moment. 3.Type m extremal distribution was confirmed as a best one among others for the frequency distribution of the low flows by x$^2$ goodness of fit test. 4.Formulas for the design low flows of the Type m extremal distribution with two and three parameters were dervied for the selected watersheds. 5.Design low flows for the Type m extremal distribution when a minimum drought is zero or larger than zero were derived for the selected watersheds, respectively. 6.Design low flows of the Type m extremal distribution with two parameters are appeared to be reasonable when a minimum drought approaches to zero and the observed low flows varied within a relating small range while those with three parameters are seemed to be consistent with the probability distribution of low flows when a minimum drought is larger than zero and the observed low flows showed a wide range.

  • The method for estimating the minimum instream flows required for the riverline aesthetics, proposed by the Kim et al.(1996), has been applied to the main channel reach of the Keum river basin in Korea. To determine the minimum instream flows for eight main reaches at Keum river basin, six representative stations have been selected. This paper provides an analysis of influence on the riverline aesthetics, which is affected by change of physical components of river, by using the survey-based quantification method. The developed questionnaire based on the literature, and submitted to the 326 people who visited an each representative station. This surveying had been implemented in three times at each representative station and we had been selected a different flowrate at each implementation. The results of this analysis and survey have produced the relationship between the variation of physical components and riverline aesthetics. Survey results bout the flow comparison are summarized as follows. At the view of riverline aesthetics, most of the respondents re sensitive at the change of the flow velocity and they prefer high water level to low water level. Moreover whole respondents prefer to abundant stream flows and moderate flow velocity. The minimum flows for riverline aesthetics is estimated at each representative station by using the survey-based quantification method and the estimated results of some representative station are greater than mean monthly flow at each station. The result of the analysis appears that establishing minimum instream flows for riverline aesthetics is not only a technical problem but a legal problem. Therefore in the case of establishing the instream flows in the river, the estimated results have to be considered as relative standard.

  • This study was conducted to pursue the normalization of frequency distribution by making approach the coefficient of skewness to nearly zero tbrough SMEMAX transformation and to get probable minimum flows can be acquired by means of transforrnation equation which has been derivated by SMEMAX method to the annual minimum flow series of five watersheds along Geum river basin. The results obtained through SMEMAX method were compared with probable minimum flows according to return periods by Type III extremal distribution which has been determined as the best fitted one among probablility distributions for the analysis of minimum flow. All the results obtained through this study are summarized as follows. 1.SMEMAX transformation based on median value was proved to be the best method when the coefficient of skewness has less reliability because of the short duration for the observation and were not affected by accidental outliers. 2.SMEMAX transformation has found to be the best one for the coefficient of skewness to be made nearly zero in comparison with log and cubic root transformation. 3.Probable minimum flows according to the return periods were derivated by transformation equations obtained through theoretical analysis of SMEM AX transformation. 4.In general, probable minimum flows by SMEMAX method were appeared as higher values in the range of five and twenty years and as lower ones in the range of below than five and more than fifty years in return periods respectively, in comparison with the results of type III extremal distribution. 5.Relative errors in the probable minimum flows of SMEMAX method to the results of type III extremal distribution were shown to be within ten percent except those of one hundred years in return periods. 6.SMEMAX method was also confirmed to be useful for the analysis of minimum flow frequency as well as flood frequency analysis.

  • This study was accomplished to confirm the possibility of supplying stream minimum flow from detention storage which was determined to reduce peak flows of flood within developing planned district. The results analyzed was summarized as follows; Firstly, Sin-gil district situated in Ansan city was selected, of which watershed area has $0.56km^2$. And detention storage was determined to $5,370m^3$ from analyzing flood volume by the SCS unit hydrograph method. Secondly, using Visual Basic ver 6.0, a detention storage water balance model was developed, in which simulation was based on conditioning storage inflow and outflow according to streamflow volume or rate state. And streamflow was simulated using the DAWAST model. Thirdly, detention operation scenarios were consisted of the combinations with inflow referencing streamflow of 5mm/day, 10mm/day and outflow referencing streamflow of 1mm/day, 2mm/day. The developed detention storage water balance model was operated to simulate daily water storages of detention sized on flood by scenarios. Stream minimum flows were able to be supplied during 209 days to 237 days per a year, total volume of stream minimum flows supplied for this period was analyzed to reach 27 to $55\% of yearly streamflow volume. If inflow criteria of streamflows to detention was considered to be established on a theoretical condition, it is expected to supply stream minimum flows of 20 to $30\% of yearly streamflow from stream to detention. Also to maximize function of supplying urban stream minimum flow from detention storages, sewage waters within developing planned district have to be treated and entered to detention inflow together with streamflows to enrich function of detention planned to reduce flood volumes.

  • The physical components of a river, such as water surface width/river width ratio, water level, and flow velocity vary according to different flowrates. Moreover, the riverside landscapes are greatly affected by the change of physical components of the stream or river. This paper provides an analysis of the influence of changing physical components of a river on the riverside landscape using a survey-based quantification method. The questionnaire was developed based on current literature, and was submitted to 326 people who each visited a representative station along the riverside. This survey was implemented three times at each representative station during periods of different flowrates. The results of this analysis and survey have Produced an understanding of the relationship between the variation of physical components and riverside landscapes. Survey results about the flow comparison are summarized as follows. Viewing riverside landscapes, most respondents are sensitive to the change of the flow velocity and prefer high water levels to low water levels. As a whole, respondents prefer abundant stream flows and moderate flow velocity in which they can perceive the flow of water. The minimum instream flows for riverside landscapes is estimated at each representative station by using a survey-based quantification method, and the estimated results of some representative stations were greater than the mean monthly flow at each station. The result of this analysis shows that establishing minimum instream flows for riverside landscapes is not only a technical problem, but also a legal problem. Therefore, in the to establish the instream flows in a river, the estimated results have to be considered as a relative standard. Regarding the survey results, respondents' satisfaction level didn't show any clear inclination according to the variation of various hydraulic properties. In determining the minimum instream flow using such an inquiry method, the structure of riverside scenery may vary according to the change of seasons or months. Therefore, to determine a consistent general inclination about the flow rate, it is necessary to have more detailed flow rates for each season or month combined with more inquiries.

  • The minimum attractive rate of return (MARR) has been used for many years as a decision criterion in engineering economic analysis. Typically, inflation has been either ignored in such studies or considered by adjusting each of the individual cash flows associated with a project for inflation, frequently a lengthy process. This research investigates a new decision criterion for economic analysis, the comparative rate of return (CRR). The CRR is defined to be the minimum rate of return earned on uninflated cash flows of proposed expenditures is simplified, since the analysis can be performed on the uninflated cash flows. The research presents a derivation of the CRR and investigates its relationships to the MARR, inflation rate project cash flows and project life.

  • First, we present two classes of sequential algorithms for minimum flow problem: decreasing path algorithms and preflow algorithms. Then we describe another approach of the minimum flow problem, that consists of applying any maximum flow algorithm in a modified network. In section 5 we present several parallel preflow algorithms that solve the minimum flow problem. Finally, we present an application of the minimum flow problem.

  • This paper focuses on planning strategies for object interception, especially with minimum time. Herein, the goal is for robot to intercept object with minimum time on a conveyor line that flows to x-axis with respect to world coordinate system. In order to do it, conveyor system needs the algorithms for minimizing time. This objective is achieved by solving about two problems: selection of a minimum-time interception point and planning of an optimal robot trajectory. Herein, the first problem is formulated a minimization of the robot-object interception time.

  • In this study, we numerically investigated the thermal stratification in solar seasonal thermal storage tanks. The vertical in/out flows were unsuitable for the thermal stratification in a large scale. The effect of an aspect ratio (AR) on the thermal stratification was investigated. When AR was less than 2, water adheres and flows along the upper wall due to buoyance and the surface effect. Thereafter, hot water flows down and a large scale vortex occurs in entire tank. For high AR, jet flows ejected from the inlet pipe impinges to the opposite wall and splits. The divided flows create two vortex flows in the upper and lower regions. These different flows strongly influence temperature and thermal stratification. The thermal stratification was evaluated in terms of the thermocline thickness and degree of stratification. Compared to ARs, the maximum degree of stratification was obtained with AR of 5 having the minimum thermocline thickness.

  • When the capacity and traffic operation at signalized intersections are analyzed in Korea, the unprotected left-turn saturation flow rate, which is an important parameter for the analysis, is estimated form the USHCM model. thus, exact analysis of the left-turn is not possible because of the difference of traffic environments between two contries. In order to improve this problem, it is undertaken in this study to develop techniques for the estimation of unprotected left-turn saturation flows based on Korean drivers' data. As study intersections, signalized or unsignalized intersections on the 6, 4 and 2 lane streets are selected. the data for the saturation flow measurement and gap-acceptance behavior analysis are inputed in a notebook computer on the sites. The critical acceptance gaps of the 6, 4, and 2 lane streets are analyzed to be 6.0 secs, 4.6 secs, and 4.3 secs respectively. the average minimum headway of the left-turn vehicle was observed to be 2.6 secs. As the model to estimate unportected left-turn saturation flows, the drew model is recommended for 6 and 4 lane streets, and a graph is suggested for the 2-lane street. As the values of the parameters of the Drew model, the 2.6 secs of this study is recommended for the average minimum headway of the left-turn. But, the critical acceptance gap varies according to the approach speed of opposing traffic and driver population, it requires field survey to measure the gap of an intersection; however, the values of the gaps studied in this study may be used for the general intersections in urban area in Korean.
