This paper is concerned with the unit commitment problem in an electric power system with both thermal and pumped-storage hydroelectric units. This is a mixed integer programming problem and the Lagrangean relaxation method is used. We show that the relaxed problem decomposes into two kinds of subproblems : a shortest-path problem for each thermal unit and a minimum cost flow problem for each pumped-storage hydroelectric unit. A method of obtaining an incumbenet solution from the solution of a relaxed problem is presented. The Lagrangean multipliers are updated using both subgradient and incremental cost. The algorithm is applied to a real Korean power generation system and its computational results are reported and compaired with other works.
This paper proposes a method for choosing the best composite power system expansion plan considering a contingency security criterion. The proposed method minimizes the investment budget fer constructing new transmission lines subject to contingency criterion. it models the power system expansion problem as an integer programming one. The method solves for the optimal strategy using a branch and bound method that utilizes a network flow approach and the maximum flow-minimum cut set theorem. Although the proposed method is applied to a simple sample study, the test results demonstrate that the proposed method is suitable for solving the power system expansion-planning problem subject to practical future uncertainties.

This study is a generalization of 'stable dynamics' recently suggested by Nesterov and de Palma[29]. Stable dynamics is a new model which describes and provides a stable state of congestion in urban transportation networks. In comparison with user equilibrium model that is common in analyzing transportation networks, stable dynamics requires few parameters and is coincident with intuitions and observations on the congestion. Therefore it is expected to be an useful analysis tool for transportation planners. An equilibrium in stable dynamics needs only maximum flow in each arc and Wardrop[33] Principle. In this study, we generalize the stable dynamics into the model with multiple traffic classes. We classify the traffic into the types of vehicle such as cars, buses and trucks. Driving behaviors classified by age, sex and income-level can also be classes. We develop an equilibrium with multiple traffic classes. We can find the equilibrium by solving the well-known network problem, multicommodity minimum cost network flow problem.

One of the important problems concerning the efficient operation of an automated manufacturing system is the flow control problem. Most research papers about scheduling and control of a FMS consider fabrication, machining and assembly independently. In this paper an effective flow control strategy for a FMS with an assembly subsystem which may be called FMAS (Flexible Machining and Assembly System) is designed using the operation-oriented and, combined Push and Pull control method. The flow control system to be described here could meet production demands with a minimum makespan while satisfying assigned due-dates and keeping a low volume of work-in-process at the same time. The control mechanism also considers machine failures and rush jobs.

An inverse method is presented to obtain material's flow properties by using small punch test. This procedure employs, as the objective function of inverse analysis, the balance of measured load-di splacement response and calculated one during deformation. In order to guarantee convergence to global minimum, simulated annealing method was adopted to optimize the current objective function. In addition, artificial neural network was used to predict the load-displacement response under given material parameters which is the most time consuming and limits applications of global optimization methods to these kinds of problems. By implementing the simulated annealing for optimization along with calculating load-displacement curve by neural network, material parameters were identified irrespective of initial values within very short time for simulated test data. We also tested the present method for error-containing experimental data and showed that the flow properties of material were well predicted.

This paper proposes a new method for choice of the best transmission system expansion plan on the side of highest satisfaction level of decision maker using fuzzy integer programming. The proposed method considers the permissibility and ambiguity of the investment budget (economics) for constructing the new transmission lines and the delivery marginal rate (reliability criteria) of the system by modeling the transmission expansion problem as a fuzzy integer programming one. It solves the optimal strategy (reasonable as well as flexible) using a fuzzy set theory-based on branch and bound method that utilizes a network flow approach and the maximum flow-minimum cut set theorem. Under no or only a very small database for the evaluation of reliability indices, the proposed technique provides the decision maker with a valuable and practical tool to solve the transmission expansion problem considering problem uncertainties. Test results on the 63-bus test system show that the proposed method is practical and efficiently applicable to transmission expansion planning.

This paper proposes a method for choosing the best transmission system expansion plan using nodal/bus delivery marginal rate criterion ($BMR_k$) defined newly in this paper. The objective method minimizes a total cost which is an investment budget for constructing new transmission lines subject to the $BMR_k$ which means a nodal deterministic reliability level requirement at specified load point. The proposed method models the transmission system expansion problem as an integer programming problem. It solves for the optimal strategy using a branch and bound method that utilizes a network flow approach and the maximum flow-minimum cut set theorem. Test results on an existing 21-bus system are included in the paper. It demonstrated the suitability of the proposed method for solving the transmission system expansion planning problem in competitive electricity market environment.
An experimental study on the unsteady effect of the extinction limit was performed in ethene jet diffusion flames. To impose the unsteadiness on jet flames, the amplitude and frequency of a co-flow velocity was varied, and the two inert gases, $N_2$ and $CO_2$, were used to dilute the oxidizer for extinguishing concentration. The experimental results shows that large amplitude of velocity induces a low extinguishing concentration, which implies that flow variation affects the blow out mechanism. Also, the flow oscillation effects under high frequency attenuates the flame extinction. These results means that flow unsteadiness extends the extinction limit and finally minimum extinction concentration by inert gases. When the Stoke's 2nd Problem is introduced to explain the flow unsteadiness on extinction concentration, the solution predicts the effect of amplitude and frequency of velocity well, and hence it is concluded the effect of low frequency velocity excitation was attributed only to flow effect.
National Fire Safety Code 103 regulates that all operating sprinkler in design area must be discharged 1 bar or more pressure and release 80 lpm or more flow rate as minimum criteria. NFSC103 also provides that the number of operating sprinkler in design area is 10, 20, 30 according to the building classification and the total flow rate is 800, 1,600, 2,400 lpm depending on 80 lpm per sprinkler. If sprinkler system is designed as above provisions, the pressure and the flow rate accordingly become smaller than the minimum criteria about 50 % sprinklers. It results in serious consequence that the purpose of sprinkler system as initial fire reaction equipment is failure. In order to solve these problems, It is desirable that Performance-based fire protection design, hydraulic calculation, is carried out to all sprinkler system.
The check valves are mechanical valves that permit fluids to flow in only one direction, preventing flow from reversing. It is classified as one way directional valves. There are various types of check valves that used in a marine application. A lift type check valve uses the disc to open and close the passage of fluid. The disc lift up from seat as pressure below the disc increases, while drop in pressure on the inlet side or a build up of pressure on the outlet side causes the valve to close. An important concept in check valves is the cracking pressure which is the minimum upstream pressure at which the valve will operate. On the other hand, optimization is a process of finding the best set of parameters to reach a goal while not violating certain constraints. The AMESim software provides NLPQL(Nonlinear Programming by Quadratic Lagrangian) and genetic algorithm(GA) for optimization. NLPQL is the implementation of a SQP(sequential quadratic programming) algorithm. SQP is a standard method, based on the use of a gradient of objective functions and constraints to solve a non-linear optimization problem. A characteristic of the NLPQL is that it stops as soon as it finds a local minimum. Thus, the simulation results may be highly dependent on the starting point which user give to the algorithm. In this paper, we carried out optimization design of the check valve with NLPQL algorithm.
