In the present work, we report a novel microstructure of scalenohedral calcite synthesized without any additives by a simple and ecofriendly carbonation process carried out in a liquid-gas system as well as the effects of experimental conditions on the crystal growth of the scalenohedral calcite phase. Various process parameters, pH, temperature, $Ca(OH)_2$ concentration, $CO_2$ flow rates, and the total volume concentration, were investigated to enhance the sensitivity of the process. The highest average length of the scalenohedral calcite was obtained at pH 6.0, temperature of $45^{\circ}C$, $Ca(OH)_2$ concentration of 0.2M, $CO_2$ flow rate of 80mL/min, and total volume of 1L. The synthesized calcite was characterized by XRD, SEM, and FTIR to identify the phases and surface morphology.
In order to improve the refresh rate of old newspaper(ONP), PCC shape-controlling experiments were carried out. The effect of a PCC polymorph on improving the quality of old newspaper was studied for a transformation from waste paper to eco-friendly paper. The synthesis of PCC consists of an in-situ process and a loading process to enhance the refresh rate of old newspaper. The characteristics between the in-situ process and the loading process could be analysed by SEM analyses of coated fiber surfaces. The retention rate ranges from 65 to 67% after the application of the in-situ process, and that after the loading process ranges from 55 to 58%. The retention rates thus show a difference of about 7-10%. In addition, the whiteness and ERIC characteristics of the in-situ process gave more efficient results than those of the loading process.
A suitable supply of mineral elements into shoot via a root system from growth media makes plants favorable growth and yield. The shortage or surplus of minerals directly affects overall physiological reactions to plants and, especially, strongly influences carbohydrate metabolism as a primary response. We have studied mineral uptake and synthesis and translocation of soluble carbohydrates in N, P or K-deficient tomato plants, and examined the interaction between soluble carbohydrates and mineral elements. Four-weeks-old tomato plants were grown in a hydroponic growth container adjusted with suboptimal N ($0.5mmol\;L^{-1}\;Ca(NO_3)2{\cdot}4H_2O$ and $0.5mmol\;L^{-1}\;KNO_3$), P ($0.05mmol\;L^{-1}\;KH_2PO_4$), and K ($0.5mmol\;L^{-1}\;KNO_3$) for 30 days. The deficiency of specific mineral element led to a significant decrease in its concentration and affected the concentration of other elements with increasing treatment period. The appearance of the reduction, however, differed slightly between elements. The ratios of N uptake of each treatment to that in NPK sufficient tomato shoots were 4 (N deficient), 50 (P deficient), and 50% (K deficient). The P uptake ratios were 21 (N deficient), 19 (P deficient), and 28% (K deficient) and K uptake ratios were 11 (N deficient), 46 (P deficient), and 7% (K deficient). The deficiency of mineral elements also influenced on carbohydrate metabolism; soluble sugar and starch was substantially enhanced, especially in N or K deficiency. In conclusion, mineral deficiency leads to an adverse carbohydrate metabolism such as immoderate accumulation and restricted translocation as well as reduced mineral uptake and thus results in the reduced plant growth.
The imogolite synthesis wore performed by using tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) and aluminium-sec-butoxide (ASB) at < $100^{\circ}C$. A mixure of TEOS and ASB in a molar ratio of 1:2 was prepared under vigorous stirring and the experiments were performed under the hydrothemal refluxing condition. When the concentration of TEOS and ASB in solution was 0.5 M, a well-crystallized imogolite was synthesized, and the reflections wore shown at d = 22.4, $9.5\;\AA$ etc., after XRD analysis. DTA analysis shows 2 exothemal peaks at 68 and $249^{\circ}C$, suggesting the dehydration and the dehyroxylation reaction, respectively. The result of TG indicates 41% weight loss. And the weak and unsymmetrical peaks by the Si-O-Al stretching vibrations at 953 and $993cm^{-1}$ and by O-Si-O bending vibration at $562cm^{-1}$ were observed after IR analysis. The synthetic imogolite was fibrous and shows a spiders web like network structure.

Monodispersed flaky silver powder was obtained by controlling the ratios of $H_{2}O_{2}/NH_{3}$ and Agin in a mixed solution of ethylene glycol and ammonia with an addition of PVP. The effects of $NH_{3}/Ag,\; H_{2}O_{2}/Ag\;and\;H_{2}PtCl_{6}/Ag$ on its morphology and size were investigated. In $H_{2}O_{2}-NH_{3}-AgNO_{3}\;system,\;NH_{3}/Ag$ molar ratio was found to be an important reaction factor for the nucleation and crystal growth of Ag powder. The synthesis of flaky powder was optimized at over 6 of $NH_{3}/Ag \;and\;5\;of\;H_{2}O_{2}/Ag\;under\;1.0{\times}10^{-3}\;of\;Pt/Ag.\;Moreover,\;as\;the\; NH_{3}/Ag$ molar ratio increased, the size of precipitates was increased regardless of the amount of Pt. In the absence of $H_{2}PtCI$, the morphology and size of reduced Ag powder were found to be irregular in shape $2-4{\mu}m$ in diameter. However, homogenized fine Ag powder was obtained due to heterogeneous nucleation when $H_{2}PtCI$ used as a cat-alyst, and flaky one was synthesized with the addition of Pt over $1.0{\times}10^{-3}$ of Pt/Ag.
Tetramethylorthosilicate (TMOS) and silica nanopowder were synthesized from the waste silicon sludge containing 15% weight of silicon powder. TMOS, a precursor of silica nanopowder, was firstly prepared from the waste silicon sludge by catalytic chemical reaction. The maximum recovery of the TMOS was 100% after 5 hrs regardless of reaction temperature above $130^{\circ}C$. But the initial reaction rate became faster while the reaction temperature was higher than $150^{\circ}C$. As the methanol feedrate Increased from 0.8 ml/min to 1.4 ml/min, the yield of reaction was not varied after 3 hrs. Then, silica nanopowder was synthesized from the synthesized TMOS by flame spray pyrolysis. The morphology of as-prepared silica nanopowder was spherical and non-aggregated. The average particle diameters ranged from 9 nm to 30 nm and were in proportional to the precursor feed rate, and precursor concentration.
Titanium dioxide ($TiO_2$) nanoparticles were prepared by the oxidation of titanium tetrachloride ($TiCl_4$) in a diffusion flame reactor. The average diameter of particles was 15 to 30 nm and mass fraction of anatase ranged from $40\;to\;80\%$. Effects of particle size and phase composition of those $TiO_2$ nanoparticles on photocatalytic properties such as decomposition of methylene blue and bacteria gas were investigated. The degree of decomposition of methylene blue by the $TiO_2$ nanoparticles under the illumination of the black light was directly proportional to the anantase mass fraction, but inversely to the particle size. The decomposition of bacteria by the $TiO_2$ nanoparticles under the illumination of the fluorescent light showed the same trend as in the case of the methylene blue.
We obtained amorphous calcium carbonate through the carbonation reaction of $Ca(OH)_2$, and through this reaction, observed changes in particle shape and phase by electric conductivity, XRD and TEM analysis. According to the result of the analysis, in the first declining stage of electric conductivity, amorphous calcium carbonate that has formed is coated on the surface of $Ca(OH)_2$ and obstructs its dissolution, and in the first recovery stage of electric conductivity, amorphous calcium carbonate is dissolved and re-precipitated and forms chains of fine calcite particles linearly joined. In the second decline of conductivity, viscosity increases due to the growth of chains of calcite particles, and finally the calcite particles are dissolved and separated into colloidal crystalline calcite, thereby increasing electric conductivity again.
