The corrosion behavior of stainless steel 304 (SS 304), titanium, nickel and aluminium is studied by immersion and anodic polarization tests in non-aqueous electrolytes. Tetraethyl ammonium tetrafluoroborate is used as a supporting electrolyte in the three kinds of solvents. The immersion test shows that chemical corrosion rate in propylene carbonate-based electrolyte is lower than those in acetonitrile- or ${\gamma}$-butyrolactone-based electrolytes. Surface analyses do not reveal any corrosion product formed after the immersion test. In the anodic polarization tests, a higher concentration of supporting electrolyte gives a higher current density. In addition, a higher temperature increases the current density in the active region and reduces the potential range in the passive region. SS 304 shows the highest corrosion potential while Al shows the lowest corrosion potential and the highest current density in all studied conditions. Based on the conducted corrosion tests, the corrosion resistance of metal substrates in the organic solvents can be sorted in descending order as follows: SS 304 - Ti - Ni - Al.

Forests potentially contribute to global climate change through their influence on the global carbon (C) cycle. The Kyoto Protocol provides for the involvement of developing countries in an atmospheric greenhouse gas reduction regime under its Clean Development Mechanism (CDM). Carbon credits are gained from reforestation and afforestation activities in developing countries. Bangladesh, a densely populated tropical country in South Asia, has a huge degraded forestland, which can be reforested by CDM projects. To realize the potential of the forestry sector in developing countries like Bangladesh for full-scale emission mitigation, the carbon sequestration potential should be integrated with the carbon trading system under the CDM of the Kyoto Protocol. This paper discusses the prospects of carbon trading in Bangladesh, in relation to the CDM, in the context of global warming.
Cheonggukjang (CGJ) is a famous traditional Korean food that is typically produced by fermenting steamed soybean seeds and has a unique flavor and taste. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of addition of lotus seeds on the quality and antioxidant activities of CGJ. Color value, 1,1-diphenly-2-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging potential, and the amounts of total polyphenol, total flavonoid, mineral, and free amino acid were evaluated. The CGJ sample produced with lotus alone or a mixture of soybean and lotus produced in Korea showed relatively high antioxidant potential. The amount of essential and total free amino acids was also high in the sample prepared with lotus seeds grown in Korea. On the other hand, the total mineral content was low in the lotus-based samples. The results indicated that a mixture of an equal proportion of soybean and lotus seeds could be a good option to prepare nutritious CGJ.
Managed aquifer recharge (MAR) is a promising water management strategy for securing stable water resources to overcome water shortage and water quality deterioration caused by global environmental changes. A MAR demonstration site was selected at Imgok-ri, Sangju-si, Korea, based on screening for the frequency of drought events and local water supply situations. The abundant groundwater discharging from a nearby abandoned coal mine is one of the potential recharge water sources for the MAR implementation. However, it has elevated levels of arsenic (~12 ㎍/L). In this study, the potential of the natural attenuation of arsenic by the field geological media was investigated using batch and column experiments. The adsorption and desorption parameters were obtained for two drill core samples (GM1; 21.8~22.8 m and GM2; 26.0~27.8 m depth) recovered from the potentially water-conducting fracture-zones in the injection well. The effluent arsenic concentrations were monitored during the continuous flow of the mine drainage water through the columns packed with the core samples. GM2 removed about 60% of arsenic in the influent (0.1 mg-As/L) while GM1 removed about 20%. The results suggest that natural attenuation is an acitive process occurring during the MAR operation, potentially lowering the arsenic level in the mine drainage water below the regulatory standard for drinking water. This study hence demonstrates that using the mine drainage water as the recharge water source is a viable option at the MAR demonstration site.

The mineral dissolution sensor system using GMR-SV and glass/Mg(200 nm) was prepared and characterized. The magnetic field sensitivity of GMR-SV to microscopic magnetic variation was about 0.8%/Oe. The change that occurs when Mg-film dissolves in water, the solubility of water, which is one of the basic properties of mineral water, was sensed by measuring the subtle variation of an electric current. In the case of edible water with Mg mineral added, bubbles were generated on the surface of the Mg film in the first 45 minutes, and the number of drops that were dissolved more rapidly than with the tap and DI waters later reduced to zero. For the edible water samples that each had different mineral Mg concentrations, the Mg solubility speed significantly differed. After injecting Mg film into the edible water, the magnetoresistance of the output GMR-SV signal decreased from a maximum of $45.4\;{\Omega}$ to a minimum of $43.6\;{\Omega}$. The measurement time was within 1 min, giving the rate of change ${\Delta}R/{\Delta}t=0.18\;{\Omega}/s$. This measurement system can be applied to develop a mineral Mg solubility GMR-SV sensor that can be used to sense the change from edible water to reduced alkali.
