Geochemical speciation of dissolved heavy metals in acid mine drainage: effects of pH and total concentration

  • In this study, we examined the influences of pH and total concentration on the speciation of heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Zn) in acid mine drainage. Their labile concentrations were analyzed by Anodic Stripping Voltammetry (ASV) at both natural pH and adjusted pHs (from 2 to 8). We obtained regression equations for predicting labile concentrations as a function of the water pH and contamination level (total dissolved metal concentration). Our data show that labile Cu depends on both the total concentration and pH, while labile Cd and Zn concentrations are controlled mainly by their total concentration rather than pH. Therefore, the pH variation of AMD may significantly change the toxicity and bioavailability especially of Cu, owing to its speciation change.

  • A novel estimation method was investigated for determining the concentrations of residual biomass, poly-3-hydroxybutyrate (PHB), and main nutrients including carbon and nitrogen sources, phosphate, and mineral ions from the supplied amount of ammonia solution used for a pH-control solution and nitrogen source in a PHB fermentation. The estimation equations for a batch culture and a fed-batch culture were derived from the relationship between the growth rate of residual biomass and the feed rate of the pH-control solution, and then were applied to the batch culture and the fed-batch cultures of Alcaligenes latus. This method was successfully applied to estimate the concentrations of residual biomass, PHB, and nutrients.

가평지역의 지하수중에 함유된 미네랄성분 조사에 관한 연구 (A Survey on the Characteristics of Mineral Inorganic in Ground-Water of Gapyeong County)

  • Ground water samples of 275 were collected from Gapyeong county which it contained six-eup and myeon and analyzed for 12 mineral inorganics extending from March to October in 2004. Among the inorganics, Calcium, Magnesium, Sodium, Potassium, Copper and Zinc had more than $70\%$ of detection frequencies, which coincided with essential inorganics required by the human body. The average values of inorganic contents by sampling sites were insignificant. Fluorine contents of 8 samples, $2.9\%$ of 275 samples, exceeded KDWR, and it was considered to be affected by a base rock being made up granite and gneiss because there were not polluting sources around. It is necessary to find out relation between geological characteristics and mineral inorganics in ground water through the further investigation. Compared to noted concentrations of bottled water, inorganic minerals including Calcium, magnesium, Sodium and Potassium related to taste were fluent double in target samples and those average concentrations were 14.80, 3.80, 7.60, and $2.31\cal{mg/L}$ respectively.

Suppression of Pyrite Oxidation by Formation of Iron Hydroxide and Fe(III)-silicate Complex under Highly Oxidizing Condition

  • Acid drainage generated by pyrite oxidation has caused the acidification of soil and surface water, the heavy metal contamination and the corrosion of structures in abandoned mine and construction sites. The applicability of Na-acetate (Na-OAc) buffer and/or Na-silicate solution was tested for suppressing pyrite oxidation by reacting pyrite containing rock and treating solution and by analyzing solution chemistry after the reaction. A finely ground Mesozoic andesite containing 10.99% of pyrite and four types of reacting solutions were used in the applicability test: 1) $H_2O_2$, 2) $H_2O_2$ and Na-silicate, 3) $H_2O_2$ and 0.01M Na-OAc buffer at pH 6.0, and 4) $H_2O_2$, Na-silicate and 0.01M Na-OAc buffer at pH 6.0. The pH in the solution after the reaction with the andesite sample and the solutions was decreased with increasing the initial $H_2O_2$ concentration but the concentrations of Fe and $SO_4^{2-}$ were increased 10 - 20 times. However, the pH of the solution after the reaction increased and the concentrations of Fe and $SO_4^{2-}$ decreased in the presence of Na-acetate buffer and with increasing Na-silicate concentration at the same $H_2O_2$ concentration. The solution chemistry indicates that Na-OAc buffer and Na-silicate suppress the oxidation of pyrite due to the formation of Fe-hydroxide and Fe-silicate complex and their coating on the pyrite surface. The effect of Na-OAc buffer and Na-silicate on reduction of pyrite oxidation was also confirmed with the surface examination of pyrite using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The result of this study implies that the treatment of pyrite containing material with the Na-OAc buffer and Na-silicate solution reduces the generation of acid drainage.

Protective effects of a mineral aqueous solution on toxicity in mouse liver and kidney

  • We demonstrated that a mineral aqueous solution (MAS) administered to mice functionally and histologically protected against cisplatin-induced acute renal failure (ARF) and $CCl_4$-induced acute liver failure (ALF). In ARF model, 0.4 and 0.2% MAS decreased mortality and the serum concentrations of blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and creatine in mice. Additionally, 0.4 and 0.2% MAS reduced contraction of distal convoluted tubules and suppressed expression of the proinflammatory cytokines interlukein-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor (TNF-${\alpha}$) in the kidney. In ALF model, 0.4 and 0.2% MAS decreased serum concentrations of alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase in mice. Additionally, 0.4 and 0.2% MAS reduced necrotic areas and suppressed expression of IL-6 and TNF-${\alpha}$ in the liver. These results indicate that a MAS might have protective effects against ARF and ALF.

알루미늄 농도(濃度)에 따른 소나무 묘목(苗木)의 생장(生長), 영양상태(營養狀態) 및 광합성속도(光合成速度)에 미치는 영향(影響) (Growth, Nutrient Status and Net Photosynthetic Rate of Pinus densiflora Seedlings in Various Levels of Aluminum Concentrations)

  • 여러 가지 Al농도가 소나무 묘목의 생장, 영양상태 및 광합성속도에 미치는 영향을 수경재배법에 의하여 조사하였다. 배양액의 Al농도는 0(대조구), 10, 30 및 60ppm의 4처리구로서 1/5000a 포트에 배양액의 pH를 4.0으로 조절한 후, 소나무(Pinus densiflora Sieb. et Zucc.) 2년생 묘목을 배양액에 이식하여 1996년 5월 8일부터 8월 6일까지 90일 동안 온실에서 생육시켰다. 소나무 묘목은 10ppm 이상의 처리구에서 건물생장의 감소를 초래하였다. 소나무 묘목의 상대생장율(RGR) 및 순동화율(NAR)은 배양액의 Al농도가 증가함에 따라서 낮아지는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 Al농도가 증가함에 따라서 순광합성속도도 저하되었다. 이는 Al처리에 의한 소나무 묘목의 RGR 및 NAR저하는 광합성저해가 원인이라고 생각된다. 또한, 60ppm 처리구에서 잎의 Ca 및 Mg농도는 대조구 및 10ppm 처리구에 비하여 감소하였으며 식물체 각 기관의 Al농도는 10ppm 이상의 처리구에서 대조구에 비하여 증가하였다. 이것은 지하부에 축적된 Al에 의해서 뿌리의 생리기능이 저하되어, 양분흡수 능력이 떨어져 결과적으로 지상부의 Ca 및 Mg와 같은 식물생육 필수원소의 농도가 감소되었음을 시사하고 있다.

Groundwater Ages and Flow Paths at a Coastal Waste Repository Site in Korea, Based on Geochemical Characteristics and Numerical Modeling

  • Groundwater flow paths and groundwater ages at a radioactive waste repository located in a coastal area of South Korea were evaluated using the hydrochemical and hydrogeological characteristics of groundwater, surface water, rain water, and seawater, as well as by numerical modeling. The average groundwater travel time in the top layer of the model, evaluated by numerical modeling and groundwater age (34 years), approximately corresponds to the groundwater age obtained by chlorofluorocarbon (CFC)-12 analysis (26-34 years). The data suggest that the groundwater in wells in the study area originated up-gradient at distances of 140-230 m. Results of CFC analyses, along with seasonal variations in the δ18O and δD values of groundwater and the relationships between 222Rn concentrations and δ18O values and between 222Rn concentrations and δD values, indicate that groundwater recharge occurs in the summer rainy season and discharge occurs in the winter dry season. Additionally, a linear relationship between dissolved SiO2 concentrations and groundwater ages indicates that natural mineralization is affected by the dilution of groundwater recharge in the rainy summer season.

광물성분진 노출사업장의 공기 중 석영의 농도 비교 (Comparisons of Airborne Quartz Concentrationsin Mineral Dust Exposure Industries)

  • Objectives: This study was conducted toestimate quartz concentrations and contents in the airborne respirable dust from various industries. Methods: A total of 818 samples were collected from 174 industries. Respirable dust samples were collected using a cyclone equipped with a 37 mm, $5{\mu}m$ pore size PVC filter. The quartz concentrations were identified using the intensity of the absorption peak of quartz at $799cm^{-1}$ by Fourie Transformed Infrared Spectroscopy(FTIR). Results: The respective geometric means for quartz concentrations in the respirable dust were 0.0050, 0.0049, 0.0025, and $0.0019mg/m^3$ in foundries, ceramics, construction, and cement/stone. The geometric mean of quartz contents analyzed by FTIR were respectively 3.43, 1.99, 1.04, and 0.82% for ceramics, foundries, cement/stone, and construction. The rate of exceeding the Korean Occupational Exposure Limit($0.05mg/m^3$) was 2.03%, but rate of exceeding the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienist(ACGIH) Threshold Limit Value($0.025mg/m^3$) was 7.12%. Conclusions: Given that foundries had a higher quartz concentration, there is a need to reduce respirable dust, such as through wet operation. In order to protect the health of workers exposed to mineral dust, it is necessary to actively consider strengthening the Korean Occupational Exposure Limit.

Mass Loss and Changes of Mineral Nutrients during the Decomposition of Mushrooms, Russula alboareolata and Lactarius violascens

  • Mass loss and changes of mineral nutrients during the decomposition of mushrooms, Russula alboareolata and Lactarius violascens, were investigated for 7d from June 29 to July 5 in 1999 in an oak stand in Kongju, Korea. At 7d after installation of litterbags, the remaining mass of R. alboareolata and L. violaxcens was 9.4% and 25.9%, respectively. The mass loss rate of R. alboareolata was significantly higher than that of L. violascens. Concentration of N, P, K, Ca and Mg of R. alboareolata and L. violascens were 37.7 mg/g, 0.97mg/g, 38.25 mg/g, 0.04 mg/g, and 0.75 mg/g for R. alboareolata and 45.7 mg/g, 1.31mg/g, 24.0 mg/g, 0.06 mg/g, and 0.80 mg/g for L. violascens, respectively. Concentrations of nutrients in R. alboareolata and L. violascens were much higher than those in the surrounding leaf litter. N, P, Ca and Mg concentrations in the decomposing mushroom tissue were higher during the experimental period in both species than initial concentrations. Potassium increased during the first 3 d and then decreased in both species. Potassium contents in the mushroom were much greater than those of Ca and Mg. Except for Ca, there was no immobilization period in all the nutrients during decomposition. At 7 d after installation of litterbags, the remaining N, P, K, Ca and Mg of R. alboareolata and L. violascens were 9.8%, 8.9%, 2.7%, 47.7%, and 14.8% of the initial contents for R. alboareolata and 28.2%,30.5%, 19.6%, 199.9%, and 02.1% for L. violascens, respectively. Nutrients could be relocated spatially during the formation and decomposition of the Basidiomycetes fruiting body.

Effects of 12-week combined exercise on RANKL/RANK/OPG signaling and bone-resorption cytokines in healthy college females

  • [Purpose] The OPG/RANK/RANKL signaling is a new family of bone metabolism biomarkers belonging to the immune system. However, the bone metabolism response to long-term exercise in the RANKL/RANK/OPG signaling is less evident. The purpose of this study was to examine these biomarkers in healthy college females after 12-weeks combined exercise intervention. [Methods] Participants (N=22, 22.4±1.3yrs) were randomly divided in two different group: 12 in the control group and 10 in the exercise group performing combined exercise program that interventions was conducted 3 times per week for 12 weeks. The outcome measures included serum concentrations of RANKL, OPG and bone metabolic cytokines such as TNF-α and IL-6, and mRNA expressions of same variables from PBMC. VO2max and bone mineral density (BMD) were measured at before and after exercise intervention. [Results] There were no significant differences in the serum RANKL, OPG concentrations and all RANKL/RANK/OPG signaling mRNA expression on interaction effect between group and time (NS). Also no significant differences were found in the serum TNF-α and IL-6 concentrations and mRNA expression (NS). The IL-6 mRNA expression only showed significant difference in the main effect of groups (p<.05). There were also no significant differences in the VO2max and BMD on interaction effect between group and time (NS). [Conclusion] These results suggested that there were no effects on bone mineral density and RANKL/RANK/OPG signaling without the effect of 8-weeks combined exercise on cardiovascular endurance fitness.
