  • The present study investigated experimentally the spreading characteristics of a single liquid impinging on the inclined micro-textured aluminum (Al 6061) surfaces manufactured by using a micro computerized numerical control (${\mu}$-CNC) milling machine. The textured surfaces were composed of patterned micro-holes (diameter of $125\;{\mu}m$ and depth of $125\;{\mu}m$). In our experiment, the de-ionized (DI) water droplet of $4.3\;{\mu}l$ was impinged normally on the non-textured and textured surfaces at two different Weber numbers, and the droplet impinged on the inclined surfaces with different angles. A high speed camera was used to capture sequential digital images for measurement of the maximum spreading distance. It was found that for the textured surface, the measured apparent equilibrium contact angle (ECA) increased up to $105.8^{\circ}$, higher than the measured ECA of $87.6^{\circ}$ for the non-textured (bare) surface. In addition, it is conjectured that the spreading distance decreased because of a liquid penetration during droplet spreading through the holes, the increase in hydrophobicity, and viscous dissipation during impact process.

  • We fabricated Ni-based alloy substrates for YBCO coated conductor using powder metallurgy. Tungsten and copper were selected as alloy elements due to their mutual solubility to the base element of nickel. The alloying elements were mixed with nickel using ball milling and dried in air. The powder mixtures were packed in a rubber mold, cold isostatic pressed 200 MPa and made into rods. The compacted rods were sintered at $1150^{\circ}C$ for 6 hours for densification. It was confirmed by neutron diffraction experiment that W and Cu atoms made complete solid solution with Ni. Lattice constant of nickel alloy increased by $0.004{\AA}$ for 1at. $\%$ W in Ni-W alloy, $0.0006{\AA}$ for 1 at. $\%$ Cu in Ni-W-Cu alloy.

  • The wear process of end mill is so complicated process that a more reliable technique is required for the monitoring and controlling the tool life and its performance. This research presents a new tool wear monitoring method based on the sound signal generated on the machining. The experiment carried out continuous-side-milling for 4 cases using the high-speed-steel end mill under wet condition. The sound pressure was measured at 0.5m from the cutting zone by a dynamic microphone, and was analyzed at frequency domain. As the cutter impacts the workpiece surface, a situation of farced vibration arises in which the dominant forcing frequency is equal to the tooth passing frequency of the cutter. The tooth passing frequency appears as a harmonics form, and end mill flank wear is related with the first harmonic. It is possible to detect end . mill flank wear. This paper proposed the new method of the end mill wear detection.

  • The development of new approaches for wheat grain hardness assessment may impact the grain industry in marketing, milling and breeding. This experiment was to develop a new method for fast identification between softness and hardness, and for maintaining germinability of seed after measurement in wheat. Results from the comparisons of accuracy and significance between image analysis and conventional methods(NIRS and textrometer) were summarized. Data obatined from image analysis for grain hardness did not show any difference from those of the conventional methods. The protein content analyzed by micro-Kjeldahl method was significantly correlated with the grain hardness measured by image analysis, textrometer, and NIRS. The analysis for wheat grain hardness using image analysis may be used as an alternative method to the conventional methods. This method also takes the seeds after analysis can be utilized as breeding materials in early generations.

  • In this study, we report the as-prepared MgO-doped $BaFe_{12}O_{19}$, which was prepared by calcination technique and high-energy ball milling process, as an electromagnetic wave absorber. The phase analysis of $BaFe_{12}O_{19}$ and the as-prepared MgO-doped $BaFe_{12}O_{19}$ was detected utilizing X-ray Diffractometer (XRD). The microstructure was characterized using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). By means of the transmission/reflection coaxial line method, the electromagnetic properties and microwave absorbing properties of the as-prepared electromagnetic wave absorber were studied. It is found that the electromagnetic wave absorber has a minimum reflection loss value of -41 dB at 4.27 GHz with a matching thickness of 2.6 mm. The experiment results revealed that the as-prepared electromagnetic wave absorber could find potential applications in many military as well as commercial industries.

  • The nitrification of pure iron powders is found to occur even at room temperature by high energy ball milling in $NH_3$ gas atmosphere. The powders of metastable iron nitrides ($0<at.%N{\le}23.3$) thus produced are identified as the super-saturated bee structure for the N content below 14.9 at.%N and the high temperature phase of the hcp structure above 19.4 at.%N. The atomic volume of Fe in the bcc phase is found to be smaller than that of the N-martensite reported in the literature. Magnetization at room temperature gradually decreases with increasing the N concentration in contrast to the enhancement reported for the bet nitrides. Neutron diffraction experiment also provide detailed information about the local structure surrounding the nitrogen atom. The coordination number of Fe atom around a nitrogen atom for the iron nitride containing 9.5 at.%N turns out to be 3.9 atoms.

  • In light guide panels, the PMMA sheet that is used in liquid crystal displays plays an important role in scattering the incident light and requires very fine machining as the sheet is directly related to the optical characteristics of the panels. High speed end milling(HSE) and high speed shaping(HSS) processes that are widely adopted and applied to the precise machining of light incident plane through vibration-assisted HSS for increasing the optical quality by minimizing the above-mentioned problems. The cutting tool and the tool post presented in this paper are designed by the authors to increase the magnitude of the cutting stroke by adopting the resonant frequency without weakening the stiffness and to reduce vibrations during even high speed feeding. The dynamic haracteristics of thecutting tool and the tool post are evaluated through simulation and experiment as well. The results reveal very appropriate dynamic characteristics for vibration-assisted HSS.

  • The synthesis and characteristics of W-Ni-Fe nanocomposite powder by hydrogen reduction of ball milled W-Ni-Fe oxide mixture were investigated. The ball milled oxide mixture was prepared by high energy attrition milling of W blue powder, NiO and $Fe_2O_3$ for 1 h. The structure of the oxide mixture was characteristic of nano porous agglomerate composite powder consisting of nanoscale particles and pores which act as effective removal path of water vapor during hydrogen reduction process. The reduction experiment showed that the reduction reaction starts from NiO, followed by $Fe_2O_3$ and finally W oxide. It was also found that during the reduction process rapid alloying of Ni-Fe yielded the formation of $\gamma$-Ni-Fe. After reduction at 80$0^{\circ}C$ for 1 h, the nano-composite powder of W-4.57Ni-2.34Fe comprising W and $\gamma$-Ni-Fe phases was produced, of which grain size was35nm for W and 87 nm for $\gamma$-Ni-Fe, respectively. Sinterability of the W heavy alloy nanopowder showing full density and sound microstructure under the condition of 147$0^{\circ}C$/20 min is thought to be suitable for raw material for powder injection molding of tungsten heavy alloy.

  • In this study, $FeSi_2$ as high temperature performance capable thermoelectric materials was manufactured by powder metallurgy. The as-casted Fe-Si alloy was annealed for homogenization below $1200^{\circ}C$ for 3 h. Due to its high brittleness, the cast alloy transformed to fine powders by ball-milling, followed by subsequent compaction (hydraulic pressure; 2 GPa) and sintering ($1200^{\circ}C$, 12 h). In order to precipitate ${\beta}-FeSi_2$, heat treatment was performed at $850^{\circ}C$ with varying dwell time (7, 15 and 55 h). As a result of this experiment thermoelectric phase ${\beta}-FeSi_2$ was quickly transformed by powder metallurgical process. There was not much change in powder factor between 7h and 55h specimens.

  • This study reports on the experiment of using deep learning algorithms to determine the machining process of aluminium and steel. A face cutting milling tool was used for machining and the cutting speed was set between 3 and 4 mm/s. Both materials were machined with a depth to 0.5mm and 1.0mm. To demonstrate the developed deep learning algorithm, simulation experiments were performed using the VGGish algorithm in MATLAB toobox. Downcutting was used to cut aluminum and steel as a machining process for high quality and precise learning. As a result of learning algorithms using audio data, 61%-99% accuracy was obtained in four categories: Al 0.5mm, Al 1.0mm, Steel 0.5mm and Steel 1.0mm. Audio discrimination using deep learning is derived as a probabilistic result.
