Topology optimization is begun with layout optimization that is attributed to Rozvany and Prager of the 1960's. They claimed that structure was transformed into truss connecting all the nodes of finite element and optimized by control of its sectional modulus. But, this method is partial topology optimization. General layout optimal design appliable to continum structure was proposed by Bendsoe and Kikuchi in 1988. Topology optimization expresses material stiffness of structure into function of arbitrary variable. If this variable is 1, material exists but if this variable is 0, material doesn't exist. Therefore, topology optimization searches the distribution function of material stiffness for structure. There are a few researchs for simple engineering problem such as topology optimization of square plane structure or truss structure. So, This study applied to topology optimization of table liner for vertical roller mill that is the largest scale in the world. After table liner decreased by 20% of original weight, the structure analysis for first optimized model was performed.

Scale defects generated on the strip surface in a tandem finishing mill line are collected from the strip trapped among the production mills by freezing the growing scale on the strip by the melt glass coating and shutting down the line simultaneously. The samples observed of its cross sectional figure showed the process of scale defect formation where the defects are formed at the base metal surface by thicker oxidized scale during each rolling passes. The properties of the oxidized layer growth both at rolling and inter-rolling are detected down sized rolling test simulating carefully the rolling condition of the production line. The thickness of the oxidized layer at each rolling pass are simulated numerically. The critical scale thickness to avoid the defect formation is determined through the expression of mutual relation between oxidized layer thickness and the lanks of the strip called quality for the scale defects. The scale growth of scale less than the critical thickness and also to keep the bulk temperature tuning the water flow rate and cooling time appropriately. Two units of Inerstand Cooler are designed and settled among the first three stands in the production line. Two units of scale defect is counted from the recoiled strip and the results showed distinct decrease of the defects comparing to the conventionaly rolled products.
Numerical analysis code has been developed for investigating the combustion characteristics in a slab heater of a steel mill company. Unsteady full 3-Dimensional behaviour can be predicted with the code. Premixed flame model is adopted for combustion phenomena. And eddy dissipation model is used for turbulent flow and non gray FVM method for radiation. Slab movement can be fully traced from entrance into heater until it's exit and computation is performed during that period. Code was validated by comparing the calculation results with experimental ones for the bench scale heater.
Azotobacter vinelandii, a strict aerobic nitrogen-fixing bacterium, has been extensively studied with regard to the ability of $N_2$-fixation due to its high expression of nitrogenase and fast growth. Because nitrogenase can also reduce cyanide to ammonia and methane, cyanide degradation by A. vinelandii has been studied for the application in the bioremediation of cyanide-contaminated wastewater. Cyanide degradation by A. vinelandii in NFS (nitrogen-free sucrose) medium was examined in terms of cell growth and cyanide reduction, and the results were applied for cyanide-contaminated cassava mill wastewater. From the NFS medium study in the 300 ml flask, it was found that A. vinelandii in the early stationary growth phase could reduce cyanide more rapidly than the cells in the exponential growth phase, and 84.4% of cyanide was degraded in 66 h incubation upon addition of 3.0 mM of NaCN. The resting cells of A. vinelandii could also reduce cyanide concentration by 90.4% with 3.0 mM of NaCN in the large-scale (3 L) fermentation with the same incubation time. Finally, the optimized conditions were applied to the cassava mill wastewater bioremediation, and A. vinelandii was able to reduce the cyanide concentration by 69.7% after 66 h in the cassava mill wastewater containing 4.0 mM of NaCN in the 3 L fermenter. Related to cyanide degradation in the cassava mill wastewater, nitrogenase was the responsible enzyme, which was confirmed by methane production. These findings would be helpful to design a practical bioremediation system for the treatment of cyanide-contaminated wastewater.
This study evaluated the potential of coffee waste (CW) and used frying oil (UFO) as an additive in the production of pitch pine (PIP) and Mongolian oak (MOK) pellets. Ash contents obtained from CW and UFO were 0.5% and <0.1%, respectively. The calorific values of UFO (31.4 MJ/kg) and CW (26.3 MJ/kg) are higher than PIP (20.6 MJ/kg) and MOK (19.1 MJ/kg). For pellets fabricated using a pilot-scale flat-die pellet mill, regardless of fabricating conditions, moisture content (MC) and bulk density of PIP and MOK pellets satisfied the A1 wood pellet standard for residential and small-scale commercial uses, as designated by the National Institute of Forest Science (NIFOS) of the Republic of Korea. When CW was used as an additive, durability of PIP pellets made with 12%-MC sawdust and MOK pellets increased. The optimal conditions for producing PIP and MOK pellets could be by adding 20 mesh CW as an additive and the using of 12%-MC sawdust. However, durability of PIP pellets and ash content MOK pellets did not satisfy the A1 wood pellet standard of NIFOS. Thus, further research is needed to improve the properties of wood pellets with additives.

In automatization of a warehouse for plate products, the selecting control of the number of steel plates to be lifted by a lifting magnet crane and the roller table control of steel plates being transported on are indispensible key technolgies. POSCO had developed these elementary technologies for the product warehouse of the plate mill in Pohang Works and succeeded in making the operation of the large-scale warehouse for plate products.
A full-scale simulation of steel mill reheating furnace was performed by using parallel computing technology. Turbulent flow as well as chemical reaction is considered and solved in a coupled manner while radiation is also calculated. The movement of slab is taken into account so that a more precise observation of its heating characteristics becomes possible through this numerical analysis.

A laboratory scale hot strip rolling wear simulator(HRWS) was developed for the purpose of investigating the tribological phenomena occurred in production hot strip rolling mills. The HRWS' main parts are the electric heater, the mechanical descaler, tandem type 2-4Hi rolling mill stands, the cooling chamber, the tension controller and coiler. By simulating the tribelogical phenomena in rolling process at laboratory, wear patterns, cracks, cat-ear wear, black film, effect of hot rolling oil lubrication, etc. were reproduced, and discussed on the performace of simulator.
Clamping force of a high strength bolt is reduced by a certain period of time after the initial set-up. In case of special treatments on faying surfaces such as protective coating, clamping force is relaxed more severely. Tests for slip critical joints subject to various faying surface parameters were conducted. Five different surface treatments were tested including mill scale surface, blast surface, rust surface and coated surfaces. Each specimen was composed of F10T M20 of high strength bolts and steel plates. Based on the result of slip coefficient test, blast treatment surface showed 0.59, rust treatment surface showed 0.54 and inorganic zinc treatment surface exhibited 0.44. Clean mill treatment surface and red lead paint treatment surface were 0.23, 0.21 respectively. It is identified that the slip coefficient in Korean structural design guide should be determined for various surface conditions. Subsequently from long term relaxation test of ASTM A 490 high strength bolts, relaxation of no-coated surfaces such as blast, clean mill, rust treatment, the loss of initial clamping load was 10.5%, 13.6% and 7.9% for 1,000 hours, while the loss of initial clamping force was reached as 15.0%, 18.7% more than the required redundancy 10% in case of inorganic zinc and red lead painted treatment. It is required that the limit of relaxation on coated faying surface should be established separately for various surfaces.
