The Battle Maps in the Journal of Armed Forces of Japanese Army Suppressing the Honam's Patriotic Soldiers (일본군 호남 의병토벌대의 진중일지(陣中日誌)에 이용된 전투약도 연구)

  • This study investigates the battle map in 'the journal of armed forces (陣中日誌)' that is written by Japanese 14th infantry battalion to defeat Korean resistance. The analysis of the battle archives shows that the use of topographic maps led to an overwhelming victory to the Japanese military. In addition, the map used by Japanese military was proven to be a hand copy of 1:50,000 scale field surveyed topographic map, called as the secret military map. The Japanese military generally used 1: 50,000 scale maps. However, the Japanese military sometimes used magnified 1:20,000 scale maps for more accurate military operations.

  • A program which can produce military standard raster maps was developed. This includes the functions that classify the types of geospatial data, publish automatically based on paper map schema, and convert products with military standard raster formats. Especially, this paper presents the automatic map-publishing technique with mathematical modeling and controling the line width, color, shape that ever not used.

  • Landcover information of access-denied area was extracted from low-medium and high resolution satellite image. Training for supervised classification was performed to refer visually by landcover map which is made and distributed from The Ministry of Environment. The classification result was compared by relating data of FACC land classification system. As we rasterize digital military map with same pixel size of satellite classification, the accuracy test was performed by image to image method. In vegetation case, ancillary data such as NDVI and image for seasons are going to improve accuracy. FACC code of FDB need to recognize the properties which can be automated.

  • Landing site searching algorithms are developed for a quadrotor using a depth map in unknown environment. Guidance and control system of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) consists of a trajectory planner, a position and an attitude controller. Landing site is selected based on the information of the depth map which is acquired by a stereo vision sensor attached on the gimbal system pointing downwards. Flatness information is obtained by the maximum depth difference of a predefined depth map region, and the distance from the UAV is also considered. This study proposes three landing methods and compares their performance using various indices such as UAV travel distance, map accuracy, obstacle response time etc.

  • The present study investigates the effects of the flight paths of military aircraft on noise map and its WECPNL(Weighted Equivalent Continuous Perceived Noise Level) distribution. Aircraft noise modeling and simulation have been performed on a Korean military air base by means of INM(Integrated Noise Model) with the input data of airfield location, aircraft specifications, flight paths and aircraft's operation schedules. The result of noise modelling has been verified in comparison with the result of measured noise level. The flight path of military aircraft, as the key parameter of the present study, was modeled by combining takeoff, overfly, approach and touch-and-go modes. The present INM simulations have been conducted for various flight path cases with different takeoff, approach modes and overfly modes. The simulation results showed that the change of flight path can remarkably affect the noise influence region and the WECPNL distribution around the airfield.

  • This study investigates and proves the historical facts about the confidential land survey on Korean peninsula made by Japanese intelligence officers at the end of Chosun Dynasty. Under the command of general staff office of Japanese army, the military officers produced several maps through road map measurements and visual measurements. Although previous literature indicated road map measurements on Korea were originally implemented from 1885, this study confirms that road map measurements were initiated in 1882 by a lieutenant Isobayashi. Reflecting secret map making procedures, the individual military intelligence officers had specialized roles for swift information collection and map production.

  • The present study investigates the effect of the flight path of military aircraft on noise map and its WECPNL distribution.   • In this paper, we propose a robust clutter pre-thresholding method using background adaptive Threshold Map for the clutter rejection in the complex coastal environment. The proposed algorithm is composed of the use of Threshold Map's and method of its calculation. Additionally we also suggest an automatic decision method of Thresold Map's update. Experimental results on some sets of real infrared image sequence show that the proposed method could remove clutters effectively without any loss of detection rate for the aim target and reduce processing time dramatically.

  • As the type of property data of military terrain analysis map is using FACC of DIGEST, there is a limitation in utilizing a domestic thematic map which is in use of other type of property data. However, even though the attempts to utilize the domestic thematic map are made at military sites, the study has not been conducted enough. Therefore, we defined it by matching the property data necessary for the military terrain analysis cartography and property of the domestic thematic map, and analyzed in accordance with the method to analyze the cross-country movement roads specified in FM 5-33. But, there was no data for the diameter of trees in the vegetation map among a terrain analysis map, whereas there being data for the sort of trees. As the diameter of trees can be broken through to the extent of certain diameters by tracked vehicles, they are the factors necessary in analyzing. In this study, the research was conducted focusing on calculating the diameters for some trees described in a stand yield table by using the age-class for trees in a forest floor map with a scale of 1:5000 and calculating the diameters of trees by using the diameter-class for the diameters of other trees.

Security Micro-web Page Based Battlefiled Smart Map (보안 마이크로 웹페이지 기반 전장 스마트 지도)

  • GPS was developed for military purposes. As a result, it is used as a military important means such as guided weapons and strategy / tactics. However, GPS depends on the communication infrastructure and is affected by interference signals. In this paper, we propose a secure micro - web page - based smart map that can enhance security without relying on communication infrastructure on the battlefield. The proposed system consists of general smartphone, security QR, central server and smart map. Only use the network when downloading the security key and SmartMap before the task starts. During operation, the smartphone transmits and receives data using a secure QR. The security QR inserts the security code to prevent forgery and falsification and confirms whether the data is authentic by checking whether the smart phone is forged or not. As a result of implementation, we solved communication security problem of existing technology by using location based service without relying on communication infrastructure.
