  • UAS(Unmanned Aircraft System) has been used a lot in military applications but recently its usage is expanding to commercial applications due to its recent technical development and its market is expected to grow rapidly in the future. In hyper-connectivity society, especially UAS would play major role as an one of potential infrastructures for the architecture of the next 5G system. The ultimate goal is the successful integration of UAS in NAS(National Airspace System) relies heavily on ensuring reliable spectrum for the robust CNPC(Command and Non-Payload Communication) links as well as payload links for other various applications in the upcoming hyper-connectivity era. In this paper, we have focused on the analysis of the existing frequencies for UAS radio-control and the current issues for CNPC and payload frequencies, and proposed future efficient utilization policy for UAS in the hyper-connectivity society.

  • Due to the recent advances in computing, communication and micro-electromechanical technology, Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) applications have been extended from military to many commercial areas such as object tracking, wire detection, and vehicular sensor networks. In some applications bursty data from many sensor nodes may be generated and the generated data from the monitoring area may be sent in a limited time to the final destination, sink node. In this paper, we present a BTF-MAC protocol adequate for WSNs applications in which bursty data packets are required to be transmitted in a limited time. The BTF-MAC is a synchronous duty-cycle MAC protocol and uses a slot-reserved and operational period extension mechanism adapted to the traffics. Our numerical analysis and simulation results show that BTF-MAC outperforms other related protocols such as DW-MAC and SR-MAC in terms of energy consumption and transmission delay.

  • This study evaluated microbial risk that could develop within soil microbial communities after amended with organic fertilizers from stabilized swine manure waste. For this purpose, we assessed the occurrences and competitiveness of antibiotic resistance and pathogenicity in soil microbial communities that were amended with swine manure wastes stabilized by a traditional lagoon fermentation process and an autothermal thermophilic aerobic digestion process, respectively. According to laboratory cultivation detection analysis, soil applications of the stabilized organic fertilizers resulted in increases in absolute abundances of antibiotic resistant bacteria and of two tested pathogenic bacteria indicators. The increase in occurrences might be due to the overall growth of microbial communities by the supplement of nutrients from the fertilizers. Meanwhile, the soil applications were found to reduce competitiveness for various types of antibiotic resistant bacteria in the soil microbial communities, as indicated by the decrease in relative abundances (of total viable heterotrophic bacteria). However, competitiveness of pathogens in response to the fertilization was pathogens-specific, since the relative abundance of Staphylococcus was decreased by the soil applications, while the relative abundance of Salmonella was increased. Further testes revealed that no MAR (multiple antibiotic resistance) occurrence was detected among cultivated pathogen colonies. These findings suggest that microbial risk in the soil amended with the fertilizers may not be critical to public health. However, because of the increased occurrences of antibiotic resistance and pathogenicity resulted from the overall microbial growth by the nutrient supply from the fertilizers, potential microbial risk could not be completely ruled out in the organic-fertilized soil samples.

  • Serious games allow learners to experience situations that are impossible in the real world for various purposes. To date the major applications of serious games include military, government, education, corporate and healthcare applications. This paper aims to provide an overview of the applications of serious games for various health-related purposes, particularly for Health and Medicine education, health risk prevention, behavioral intervention, and disease self-management. These games identified numerous papers reporting empirical evidence about the impacts and outcomes. There is potential promise for serious games to improve health outcomes. We discuss implications of using serious games for health-related purposes and future direction for research in this area.

  • To supply electric power in certain extreme environments such as a spacecraft or in military applications, a radioisotope thermoelectric generator has been highlighted as a useful energy source owing to its high energy density, long lifetime, and high reliability. A radioisotope thermoelectric generator generates electric power by using the heat energy converted from the radioactive energy of a radioisotope. In this study, FE analyses such as radiation shield analysis, heat transfer analysis, and power recovery rate analysis have been carried out to achieve an optimal design for a radioisotope thermoelectric generator using $SrTiO_2$.

  • With the recent rapid growth of RFID technologies, the Application of RFID systems into the medical or the military industries as well as into the distribution and logistics industry are now attempted continuously. The government and private sectors plan to carry out various small and large scale projects related to RFID systems. However, many companies attempting to apply RFID systems applications into their organizations are encountering many several difficulties because of the lack of installation experience and the absence of an useful guideline. This paper focuses on identification and classification of typical barriers to the successful application of RFID systems according to the five-step method of system application process. Moreover a "barrier map" is produced by conducting a survey and interviews by specialists. In addition, a practical guideline to overcome such barriers is presented and discussed.

  • MGT (micro gas turbines) have been gaining particular attentions with a variety of commercial and military applications due to their advantages such as compact size, simple operability, easy maintenance, and low emissions. This study deals with development processes of an annular combustor applied to MGT. Preliminary design methodologies are used to size the main components of the combustor. Key design features such as liner temperatures and pressure losses are evaluated. Results show that the estimated liner temperatures are within acceptable range. Dominant factors for pressure losses are estimated to be air admission holes and burner swirlers.

  • One of the characteristics of Delaunay-Voronoii methods of mesh generation is local remeshing ability in comparison with other methods, which is very useful in adaptive finite element applications. Main part of the process is to construct remeshing element group out of the whole elements and to remesh it. Adjacent element array, accompanied with an additional algorithm of several lines, is introduced to make the process simple so that implementation of the concept is possible at the level of general PC users.

  • Thermal imaging is mainly used in military equipment required for night observation. In particular, technologies of uncooled thermal imaging detectors are being developed as applied to low-cost night observation system. Many system integrators require different specifications of the uncooled thermal imaging camera but their development time is short. In this approach, EOSYSTEM has developed a small size, TEC-less uncooled thermal imaging camera module with $32{\times}32mm$ size and low power consumption. Both domestic detector and import detector are applied to the EOSYSTEM's thermal imaging camera module. The camera module contains efficient infrared image processing algorithms including : Temperature compensation non-uniformity correction, Bad/Dead pixel replacement, Column noise removal, Contrast/Edge enhancement algorithms providing stable and low residual non-uniformity infrared image.

  • Motility contrast imaging is a coherence-domain imaging technique that uses cellular motility as a fully endogenous imaging contrast agent. Motility is measured inside tissue using a digital holographic coherence gate that extracts dynamic speckle from fixed depths. The dynamic speckle arises from the normal organelle motion inside cells, and from the movement of the cellular membranes driven by the cytoskeleton. It measures cellular activity and the effects of temperature and osmolarity. Motion is sensitive to cytoskeletal drugs, such as the antimitotic drugs used for cancer chemotherapy, and the effects of drug combinations also can be monitored. Motility contrast imaging is a potential tissue-based assay platform for highthroughput screening of pharmaceuticals.
