Evaluation of Treatment Outcomes of Early-Stage Endometrial Cancer Radiotherapy: A Single Center Experience

  • Background: Postoperative adjuvant radiotherapy (RT) in the management of early stage endometrial cancer (EC) is still controversial. Here we report our institutional experience with patients who received postoperative RT for stage I-II EC over a period of 35 years and assess potential predictors of local recurrence (LR), distant metastasis (DM), and overall survival (OS). Materials and Methods: A total of 188 patients undergoing postoperative RT for stage IA-II EC between 1977 and 2012 were evaluated. Some 96 received median 46 Gy whole pelvic radiotherapy (WPRT) (range: 40-60 Gy), 37 were given WPRT with vaginal cuff therapy (VCT), and 55 received only VCT either with brachytherapy (BT) or stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT). Chemotherapy was given to 5 patients with uterine papillary serous carcinoma (UPSC). Logistic regression analysis was used to assess the effect of clinicopathological factors on LR, DM, and OS. Results: Median follow-up time was 11 years (range: 1-35 years). At the time of analysis, 34 patients were not alive. Of the 15 patients with LR, 7 (46.7%) recurred in the vaginal stump, 5 (33.3%) in the pelvic region, and 3 (20%) in the paraaortic nodal region, while 12 had distant metastasis. UPSC histology (p=0.027), sole VCT (p=0.041), high histologic grade (p=0.034), and age ${\geq}71$ (p=0.04) were poor prognostic factors on univariate analysis. Conclusions: In our patients receiving radiotherapy for early-stage EC, grade III disease and age ${\geq}71$ were associated with shorter OS whereas UPSC histology was an independent predictor for both LR and DM.

Clinicopathological Features and Survival of Young Turkish Patients with Testicular Germ Cell Tumors

  • Background: Testicular germ cell tumors (TGCTs) are a relatively common malignancy in young men. The aim of this study was to investigate the clinicopathological features and survival of young Turkish patients with TGCT. Materials and Methods: In this retrospective study, the clinical and pathological characteristics of young Turkish patients with TGCT who were monitored by the Department of Medical Oncology of a military hospital between 2008 and 2013 were investigated. Overall survival data were analyzed. Results: Ninety-six patients were included in the study. The mean age was 26.4 years. Among the patients, 17.7% had seminoma and 43.8% had mixed non-seminomatous germ cell tumors. Some 46.9% were Stage I, 30.2% were Stage II, and 22.9 were Stage III. Of the patients, 83.3% received chemotherapy, 25% underwent retroperitoneal lymph node dissection (RPLND), 3.1% received radiotherapy, and 12.5% were followed-up without treatment. In addition, 18.8% of the patients were administered salvage chemotherapy due to relapse or progression. The 5-year overall survival rate was 90.2% for all patients. The 2-year overall survival rate was 100% for Stage I patients, 94% for Stage II patients, and 70.2% for Stage III patients. The difference between the survival curves of stages was statistically significant (p=0.029). Conclusions: In young Turkish patients with TGCT, good results were obtained with appropriate treatment, most receiving chemotherapy. The prognosis of the disease was good even in the advanced stage.

Effects of the Program Improving Adjustment to Military Life, on Stress, Depression, Idea of Suicide, Self-esteem, and Adjustment to Military Living in Auxiliary Police (군생활 적응 향상 프로그램이 전.의경의 스트레스, 우울, 자살생각, 자아존중감, 군생활 적응에 미치는 효과)

  • Purpose: This study was done to identify whether the program, improving adjustment to military life would have an effect on stress, depression, idea of suicide, adjustment to military living, and self-esteem in auxiliary police. Method: This quazi experimental study using a non-equivalent control group pretest and posttest design was conducted from February 1 to May 30, 2007. Using convenience sampling, the researcher recruited 120 auxiliary police and randomly assigned each to either the experimental and the control group. The experimental group received an 8-week program to improve adjustment to military life. Results: Anxiety, stress, depression, idea of suicide, self-esteem, and adjustment to military living were significantly different between the experimental and control groups. Conclusion: These results suggest that programs to improve adjustment to military life would improve psychological health and adaptation of military living in auxiliary police. Replication studies are needed to confirm the effects of this program and to identify the long-term maintenance effects of the program.

  • A gun barrel of infantry fighting vehicle is supported like a type of cantilever. Temperature of a gun barrel is increased by heat transfer due to the combustion of propellant charge during the firing. Thus, the muzzle of a gun barrel is deflected in accordance with its temperature and the accuracy rate is decreased by deflection of the muzzle. In this study, deflection of a gun barrel is estimated by measuring its restoration rate because measuring the deflection rate is difficult due to the vibration of the gun barrel during the firing. In order to obtain the relations between deflection rate and restoration rate of the 40mm gun barrel of Next Infantry Fighting Vehicle(NIFV) under varying temperature, measurement of deflection rate and restoration rate is carried out using 5.56mm Remington rifle barrel. Effect of the estimated deflection rate of a gun barrel of NIFV on the hit probability is also analyzed.

Support Vector Machine based Ballistic Limit Velocity Measurement for Small Caliber Projectile (SVM 기반 소화기 방호한계속도 측정방법 연구)

  • This paper presents a ballistic limit velocity measurement using the support vector machine that classifies two classes, the partial penetration and the complete penetration, by generating a linear separating hyperplane that equally divides the classes. For the ballistic limit velocity measurement, the previous methods(MIL-STD-662F and NIJ-STD-0101.06) have required a large number of experiments that caused high cost and time. However, the proposed method is not only flexible, requiring 0.85 ~ 4.8 times fewer experiments but also reliable, providing less than 2 % difference in results compared to the previous methods. For its validation, live fire experiments were conducted using various thickness SS400 iron plates as a target and two different types of live bullets such as 5.56 mm M193 and 7.62 mm M80.

  • We propose a simple nondestructive method to obtain refractive-index profiles of a graded-index (GRIN) light-focusing rod by means of a diffraction grating. In our proposed method, a laser beam is illuminated through a diffraction grating perpendicular to the axis of the GRIN lens and the separation between the zeroth and first-order diffraction peaks is measured and analyzed. The results demonstrate that the refractive-index profiles of commercially available GRIN lenses can be successfully reconstructed.

  • 본 논문에서는 데이터 기반 정보 고도화를 통해, 사격전술지휘 의사결정체계의 Assisted Decision-Maker인 AI 부전포대장을 구현하는 방법론을 제시한다. 전포대장은 지휘결심의 말단에 있는 지휘관으로서, 최종적인 의사결정자이다. 이들의 지휘결심이 보다 견고하고 신속하게 이루어지도록 하는 것이 전쟁 승패에 매우 중요한 요소이다. 화력체계를 언급하는 경우 JMEM 탄약효과가 자주 언급되고 한국형 구축 사업이 아직 진행 중이기도 하지만, 완료되더라도 임의의 지형과 전술상황 각각에 대한 유용성까지를 입증하는 데에는 또 다른 기간과 노력이 요구된다. 본고에서는 AI 플랫폼 구축의 실제 사례가 전무한 상황에서 AI 부전포대장 구축을 위해 필요한 연구의 범위와 그 대상을 살펴보고, 지능형 사격지휘체계의 구축 방안을 제안한다.

  • In the present study, flexible display technology, which has attracted significant attention in recent years, is discussed. The technology has been widely applied to various devices, such as foldable smartphones and rollable TVs. Notably, different flexible display types from LCD to OLED and E-paper have been employed to implement such devices in practice. Among them, the OLED technology has thus far led the flexible display market. In the present study, the concept and current application fields of the technology are analyzed, and further its potential applications are discussed.

Feasibility Study on Road Bridge Passed by Heavy Equipment Transporter (HETS 차량의 교량 통과 가능성에 관한 연구)

  • In Korea, the driving system restriction criteria is strictly applied(gross weight 400kN, axial load 100kN). Especially after the Seoungsu Bridge accident, safety factor has been strictly applied. The Safety factor is applied to the cumulative results for each steps like design, construction, maintenance of the Bridge. Because of it, the bridge is undervalued compared to its capacity. So, this generates loss for both private and military sector(eg. logistical delays, structural damage, etc.). But analyzing data from many existing researches we have confirmed that the military heavy vehicle may pass through the first class bridges. In consequence, this study have focused on determining whether HETS vehicles can pass over the first class bridge, without safety issues, using MIDAS structural analysis program. The results have confirmed that the military heavy vehicle may pass over the bridge.
