  • The dynamic material characteristics on some mild steel sheets were observed. The dynamic tests were conducted on the ESH servo-hydraulic test machine. It was observed that the mechanical properties of mild steel are highly sensitive to the value of strain rate. The well known Cowper-Symonds constitutive equation was used to generalize the strain rate sensitivity effect. Modified constitutive equations were suggested to couple the strain hardening to the strain rate sensitivity. The dynamic stress-strain relationships for the mild steel sheets used in the present study were reasonably predicted using these modified constitutive equations.

  • Model materials are developed to achieve similarity of flow patterns for mild steels in forming processes at high temperatures. The model materials consist of pure plasticine and one or two additives such as resin and lanolin. To verify the similarity of flow patterns between physical modeling and compression of mild steels at high temperatures, ring and compression tests have been carried out with the developed-model materials at various strain rates, temperatures and lubricants. The test results are in good agreement with the flow patterns obtained from upsetting of a mild steel at high temperatures.

  • The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the easiness of suture and fixation of modified total ring prostheses (m-TRP). Twelve healthy dogs (B.W.2-10 kg) were randomly assigned to three groups. In group A (3 dogs), total ring prostheses was fixed by penetrating a suture material through tracheal mucosa. In group B (3 dogs), TRP was fixed by suturing on tracheal cartilage and muscular layer not penetrating through tracheal mucosa. m-TRP was applied to the cervical portions (group M-C,3 dogs), and thoracic portions (group M-T,3 dogs). Operating time of group M-C (37.33$\pm$6.80 min.) was shorter than those of groups B (83.33$\pm$8.50 min.) and A (63.33$\pm$11.06 min.) (p<0.01). Clinical complications were minimal and limited to mild, short-term hematoma, vomiting, edema, and inflammation. Coughing remarkably decreased in group B rather than group A. Dyspnea was not showed in group A, B, and M-C, but group M-T had a mild dyspnea. Gross postmortem findings were similar in all groups. Mild adhesions were present between prostheses and adjacent structures, but tracheal lumen was clean. Severe adhesions were present where m-TRP had been applied in the thoracic portions. Histopathologic abnormalities included mild to moderate adventitial and periprosthetic fibrosis and mild adventitial inflammation. The present study indicated that m-TRP were easier in suture and fixation than TRP and had no differences in support for trachea and side effects.

  • This paper reports mild steel(SPHC) and stainless steel(STS304) sheets commonly used for railroad cars or commercial vehicles such as in the automobile and shipbuilding industries. The sheets are used in these applications, which are mainly fabricated using the shielded metal arc welding(SMAW) of dissimilar materials. It also reports an interesting application of Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy(LIBS) in order to determine the elemental composition diffusion of SPHC and STS304. Arc blow produced by magnetic force during the electric arc welding prevents the formation from a sound weldment. In particular, the mechanical properties of the joint are influenced by not only by geometrical and mechanical factors but also the welding conditions for the arc welded joint. Therefore, the mechanical properties and performance are evaluated by performing a physicochemical component analysis. And they increase in accordance with content of elements and microstructure in mild steel. As results, appropriate range for magnetic fields could be achieved. Therefore, the effect of magnetic force in a butt weld of mild steel plates was investigated by comparing to the measured data.

  • Nanoporous anodic alumina membranes (NAAM) with high-density through-hole pores fabricated by hard anodization of aluminum in 0.3 M oxalic acid under the applied voltage of 40 (mild anodization), 80, 100, 120 and 140 V were investigated. The current-time responses monitored using a PC-controlled anodization cell and the corresponding pore structures attainable from field-enhanced scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) were analyzed in order to establish the optimum fabrication process. The nanoporous structure can be produced for all the voltage conditions, while the stabilized through-hole pore formation seems to occur at 40, 80 and 140 V. The growth rate under 140 V hard anodization was over 30 times higher than under 40 V mild anodization (1.5 um/hr).

  • The effects of contact pressure on the sliding wear behavior of mild steel in a pin-on-disc type apparatus were investigated. Sliding wear tests were conducted with various combinations of the load and apparent area of contact. The wear behavior of mild steel as a function of sliding speed was independent of contact pressure. However, the wear rate at different sliding speeds was influenced by the load regardless of the apparent area of contact. This was attributed to the fact that there may be no difference in the real area of contact for any combination of the load and apparent area of contact.

  • This paper provides a practical stochastic method by which the maximum equilibrium scour depth below a pipeline exposed to random waves plus a current on mild slopes can be derived. The approach is based on assuming the waves to be a stationary narrow-band random process, adopting the Battjes and Groenendijk (2000) wave height distribution for mild slopes including the effect of breaking waves, and using the empirical formulas for the scour depth on the horizontal seabed by Sumer and Fredsøe (1996). The present approach is valid for wave-dominant flow conditions. Results for random waves alone and random wave plus currents have been presented and discussed by varying the seabed slope and water depth. An approximate method is also proposed, and comparisons are made with the present stochastic method. For random waves alone it appears that the approximate method can replace the stochastic method, whereas the stochastic method is required for random waves plus currents. Tentative approaches to related random wave-induced scour cases for random waves alone are also suggested.

  • The major purpose of the present study is to evaluate the performance of various galvanized (GI) or galvannealed (GA) mild steels and AHSS in stamping applications. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) of selected stamping operations was conducted to estimate the critical pressure boundary conditions that exist in practice. Using this information, laboratory tribotests, e.g. Twist Compression (TCT), Deep Drawing (DDT) and Strip Drawing (SDT) Tests, were developed to evaluate the performance of selected lubricants and die materials/coatings in forming galvanized steels of interest. The sheet materials investigated included mild steels and AHSS (e.g. DP600 GI/GA, DP780 GI/GA, TRIP780 GA and DP980 GI/GA). Experimental results showed that galvanized material resulted in more galling, while galvannealed material showed more powdering and flaking. The surface roughness and chemical composition of galvanized sheet materials affected the severity of galling under the same testing conditions, i.e. lubricants and die materials/coatings. The results of this study helped to determine the critical interface pressure that initiates lubricant failure and galling in stamping selected galvanized sheet materials. Thus, to prevent or postpone the critical interface conditions, the results of this study can be used to select the optimum combination of galvanized sheet, die material, die coating and lubricant for forming structural automotive components.
