  • The research aimed to compare science curriculum between Korea and Israel and find out characteristics of science curriculum in Israel at middle school level. The middle school 'science' of the 7th revised national curriculum in Korea and middle school 'science and technology' in Israel were compared. Among characteristics of the Israel curriculum of 'science and technology,' distinct ones are as follows: First, 'science and technology' was most highly emphasized with the largest number of time allotment among all subjects at middle school level in Israel. Second, the contents of 'science and technology' were classified into seven areas of 'energy and interaction', 'materials', 'organism', 'earth and the universe', 'technological systems and products' . 'information and communication',and 'ecosystems' rather than four areas of energy, materials, life and earth in Korea. Third, 'organism' was allocated with the highest number of hours among seven areas. Fourth, objectives of each content of 'science and technology' were divided into three categories: scientific aspect, technological aspect, and social value and objectives of each category were related to one another. This characteristic seems to stress STS, multidisciplinary, and interdisciplinary approaches in 'science and technology' in Israel. Such characteristics of the 'science and technology' education in Israel are likely to make significant contributions to establish human resources of highly developing science and technology including IT, BT, NT, ST in the future society. Reflecting upon the characteristics of 'science and technology' education in Israel, Korea might seek for ways to improve its national power based on science and technology through strengthening science and emphasizing science and technology contents among school curriculum.

  • The purpose of this research is to investigate and analyze the attitudes and images of middle school students toward invention. This aims to provide basic data on qualitative improvement invention education. The results of this research are as follows: First, as for middle school students, the level of emotion and interest attitude toward invention is higher than elementary school students. The image of invention is positive but difficult (M=3.70). Second, as the overall attitude to invention according to gender of middle school students shows a consistent invention attitude, the attitude formation on invention during elementary school time is found to be important. The overall image of invention according to gender is shown to be significantly different (p<0.05). Third, the overall attitude on invention according to the grade of middle school students does not show a statistically significant difference (p>0.05). As for the ranking according to factors on attitude depending on grades, cognitive attitude is followed by emotional attitude, attitude of interest, and practical attitude. The overall image of invention according to the grade of middle school students does not show a statistically significant difference (p>0.05). This is determined as a result of the large pressure acting on the study from middle school. Finally, the acts of invention such as idea, creation, imagination, creativity are considered as important as the results of analysis of the words of the invention. Invention is analyzed to contribute to developing new products, providing convenience in life, social development, usefulness in real life, and alleviating inconvenience.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of the level-differentiated laboratory activities suggested by the 7th national curricula compared to the in-depth level activities only and supplementary level activities only. Two hundred 7th grade students attending a coed middle school were selected for this study and divided into three groups; level-differentiated, in-depth, and supplementary group. In each group, the students were subdivided into the in-depth level and the supplementary level by the formative test after completing the basic learning course. The in-depth and the supplementary laboratory activities were developed and engaged to the respective students in the level-differentiated group for one semester, while only the in-depth activities were engaged to the in-depth group and only the supplementary activities were engaged to the supplementary group. To examine the effects of treatments, the science knowledge test and the inquiry process skill test were administered before and after treatments and the students' opinions about the level-differentiated instruction were surveyed. The results showed that there were significant differences in the science knowledge achievements between the groups while no significant difference was found in the inquiry process skills. Post hoc analysis showed these differences were found between the level-differentiated group and the supplementary group. After the activities, most students in the level-differentiated group responded positively on doing level-differentiated activities except a few students in the supplementary level, These results justify the effectiveness of the level-differentiated laboratory activities compared to the supplementary only laboratory activities in middle school science classes.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the argumentation of middle school students during the argument-based inquiry. A total of sixty eight 8th grade middle school students participated in this study and they performed six argument-based inquiry programs. Data were collected from two of the latest programs by audio-recording and transcription of each group engaging in argumentation. The study findings showed that; first, the most frequent element of argumentation in the all of stages of the two programs was following order: 'claim' and 'request and response' and 'simple agreement'. The most active argumentation was showed at the designing experiments stage and the most inactive was showed at the generating questions stage. Second, as a result of analyzing the argumentation level for each stage of the argument-based inquiry, a high level of argumentation was shown at the claim and evidence stage, and a low level of argumentation was shown at the generating questions stage in the argumentation structure. As a result of the validity of argumentation, the validity of argumentation was the highest level in the claim and evidence stage.

  • I conducted a pretest on the students' preference before I incorporated Cooperative learning in five classes of second grade students, at a girl's middle school which is located in Gimje city. After ten weeks of Cooperative school work, the students took a post test with the same questions as the pretest. The result of this method greatly impacted on the change of students' scientific preference. It means that the students showed their positive awareness of and the participation in the science class in comparison with the classes before they were taught this new style of education. However it is difficult to distinguish the differences of their scientific attitude on the recognition about the scientists and the habit which they think scientifically. This resulted from a short period of ten weeks of learning which is not sufficient to carry out the study strategy effectively. Surveys of the students on Cooperative learning indicates that the middle level students prefer this method unlike the higher or lower level. I am convinced that they can learn from the students of higher level and are able to help the lower level with the interaction through Cooperative learning.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the nutritional knowledge and eating behavior of middle school students in Gwangju area in order to provide basic data for the development of home economics curriculum that can help the students form healthy eating habits. For this purpose, a self-administered questionnaire was distributed to middle school students in Gwangju area. A total of 330 questionnaires were collected by convenience sampling and analyzed using SPSS(Statistics Package for the Social Science) Version 20.0 for Windows. Results of this study are as follows. First, school curriculum session ranked top(31.82%) on the list of sources for middle school students to acquire nutrition knowledge. Second, the mean score of nutrition knowledge of all respondents was moderately high(14.33 points out of maximum 20 points). In terms of nutrition knowledge by gender, female students had a higher level of nutrition knowledge in the 'Food' domain than their male counterparts(p<0.05). With regard to nutrition knowledge by grade, Grade 9 showed a higher score than Grade 7 and 8(p<0.001). Third, the mean score of eating behavior of all respondents was at an average level(69.75 out of 100 points). In terms of eating behavior by gender, male students showed a higher score than their female counterparts(p<0.05). In particular, male students had higher scores than female students for the following items: "I exercise regularly after school"(p<0.001); "I regularly eat meal three times per day"(p<0.01); "I don't skip breakfast"(p<0.01); and "I don't eat sweet food often"(p<0.01). In terms of eating behavior by grade, Grade 9 showed higher scores than Grades 7 and 8 for the following items: "I eat meal out of thankfulness for those who have prepared food"(p<0.01) and "I eat grains for every meal"(p<0.01). Finally, with regard to eating behavior depending on the level of nutrition knowledge, the 'Upper' and 'Middle' groups had higher scores for eating behavior than the 'Lower' group, indicating that a lower level of nutrition knowledge resulted in a lower score in eating behavior. Based on the above results, home economics teachers responsible for dietary education should have a greater sense of mission and pride and make more efforts to improve nutrition knowledge and eating behavior of middle school students.

  • This study aimed to demonstrate 'moderated mediation' effect of self-control on the relationship of neuroticism-smart phone addiction-school adaptation. For this purpose, we carried out a survey targeting middle school students who were vulnerable to smart phone addiction, and 1,400 middle school students responded to questionnaire. The results showed that the moderated mediation effect of self-control was statistically significant. In detail, school satisfaction and school performance, the sub-factors of school adaptation, showed significant results but social relation non-significant. Concerning moderating effect of self-control, results supported significantly moderating effect, demonstrating that high level of self-control showed consistently lower level of smart phone addiction than low level of self-control regardless of level of neuroticism. We can find the meanings of this study in having demonstrated, on the one hand, the causal process of smart phone addiction, and on the other, moderating effect and moderated mediation effect on this causal process through interaction between neuroticism and self-control. Finally, limitations and suggestions for future research were discussed.

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate internet addiction among middle school students and to examine the mediating effects of social support in the relationships of self-efficacy and self-control with internet addiction. Methods: The participants in the study were 119 middle school students in J city. The measurements included a self-efficacy scale, a self-control scale, a social support scale, and the Internet Addiction Scale for Youth. Data were analyzed using the independent t-test or Mann-Whitney U test, one-way analysis of variance, the Scheffé test, Pearson correlation coefficients, and multiple-regression using SPSS version 22.0. Mediation effects were analyzed by the Sobel test and Baron and Kenny's hierarchical analysis technique. Results: Significant correlations were found among self-efficacy, self-control, and internet addiction. Social support had partial mediating effects in the relationship between self-efficacy and internet addiction, as well as in the relationship between self-control and internet addition. Conclusion: In order to prevent internet addiction, the promotion of interactions among peers, which is a component of social support, is particularly important. It is also necessary to promote face-to-face activities that can strengthen relationships. The findings suggest that intensifying social support may help reduce the level of internet addiction in middle school students.

  • This study is to suggest a method of constructing Informatics textbook considering the cognitive development level of middle school learners. We developed 3 types of learning content models according to the educational objectives and activities of learners and then suggested the methods of constructing textbook. For this, we reviewed the related research results on the development characteristics and cognitive development theories of middle school students. Second, we drew instructional schemes from the pedagogic theories. Then, we suggested 3 models: 'Learning Centered on Concept'. 'Learning Centered on Investigation', and ' learning Centered on Actual Training'. We suggested construction schemes to each model and verified the adequacy using questionnaire to 30 teachers and received the positive responses from most teachers.
