  • Xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis is an uncommon chronic renal infection, which is usually found on middle-aged women and is rare in infant. Sometimes it forms focal mass like lesion of kidney with pathologically characteristic lipid-laden macrophage. A 1-month female infant was admitted for fever and moaning sound. On work-up of urinary tract infection, abdomen ultrasonography and computed tomography revealed a large mass on the upper portion of right kidney and PET/CT showed homogeneously increased $^{18}F$-FDG uptake. The radical nephrectomy of right kidney was performed and histology revealed a focal xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis. To our knowledge, this is the first report presenting the finding of $^{18}F$-FDG PET/CT in the childhood xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis.

  • This study explored the parental belief types of mothers who had defected from North Korea and found out its relationship to the mother's child-rearing behaviors and socio-demographical variables and the child's age. 89 mothers who had defected from North Korea with the youngest child being under 20 years old, responded to the questionnaire. The data were statistically analyzed by cluster analysis, MANOVA, and $X^2$-test. The results showed that the parental beliefs were clustered into 3 types: 'high child- and parent-centered & low cultural transformation'(cluster 1)(37.08%), 'low child- and parent-centered & middle cultural transformation'(cluster 2)(46.03%), and 'high child- and parent-centered & high cultural transformation'(cluster 3)(16.85%). The differences among the clusters were found in the warmth-acceptance and rejection-restriction dimensions of the mother's child-rearing behaviors. The frequencies of each cluster were meaningfully different depending on the mother's age, educational level, length of residence in South Korea, and their child's age. Based on these findings, the implications and suggestions were discussed.

  • The present study explored effects of significance of study, pressure for study, and pressure for success on life satisfaction of adolescents, and moderating effect of parent-adolescent communication. Participants were 1,384 adolescents in elementary, middle, and high school, and they responded all the questionnaires by themselves. Results were as follows. Firstly, there were significant differences in extent of significance of study, pressure for study and success, parent-adolescent communication, and life satisfaction of adolescents according to their demographic variables. Secondly, the more they got significance on study, and the more their parents emphasized study and success, the lower their life satisfaction was. Finally, there was a moderating effect of parent-adolescent communication. As adolescents had a positive communication with their parents, the negative effects for the significance of study and pressure for study and success on their life satisfaction were lessened.

  • The purpose of this study was to understand a mother's parenting behavior and home environment in relation to the stress of a male child. The subjects were 200 mothers of 4-6 years old children in early childhood programs located in Seoul and Gyeonggi province. Instruments used in this study were the Mother's Parenting Behavior Scale (Park Seong Yeon & Lee Suk, 1990), Home Scale (Jang Yeong Ae, 1981), and Children's Usual Stress Scale (Yeom Hyeon Gyeong, 1998). Data was analyzed by descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation, and multiple regression analysis. Results indicated that (a) stress was shown to be higher if the mother's parenting behavior was authoritarian and over-protective, (b) children of lower economic background showed a higher stress level than middle and upper economic background subjects, and (c) the mother's educational background, authoritarian and over-protective parenting behavior and quality of the family background were meaningful variables for children's stress.

  • This study sought to investigate and assess the development patterns of children, aged from 3 to 5, by means of a longitudinal approach. The children's developmental patterns are classified according to five curriculum areas; physical health, social skills, expression, language, and exploration-. The developmental patterns are analyzed in detail according to the observation period, children's ages, and their genders. The subjects consisted of 108 children in A city. A research assistant was asked to observe and keep records of the children's behaviors at three distinct times -early, middle, and late in the school year. The 'observational scale for children' was used as the measurement tool. The data which was thus collected was then subject to statistical analysis. The major findings of the study are as follows. First, there were significant differences in all five curriculum areas according to the children's age and observation period. That is, five-year-old children showed higher scores than three- and four-year-old children. Second, there were significant differences in the social development within five curriculum areas according to the children's gender and the observation period. That is, girls exhibited higher scores than boys.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine effects of father involvement, marital happiness and conflicts, and meanings of parenthood on maternal parenting stress and compare the relative importance of those variables in three (low, middle, and upper) income groups. The subjects of this study were 654 nuclear families which consisted of 3 family members, couple and their infant children aged between 4 months and 10 months. Data was taken from the 2008 Panel Data of Korean Children. The results of this study were as follows : First, maternal parenting stress, father involvement, mother's marital satisfaction and conflicts were statistically significant according to income levels. Second, mother's marital satisfaction was the most significant variable in predicting father involvement, and mother's marital conflict was the most significant one in predicting maternal parenting stress. Third, the significance and numbers of variables which were impacted upon maternal parenting stress and father involvement varied according to income groups. Fourth, in all three income groups, the effects of father involvement on maternal parenting stress was not significant when marital relationship and meanings of parenthood underwent in regression analysis. However, father involvement was impacted upon maternal parenting stress by itself.

  • The effects of parental attachment and empathy on social competence were examined with a sample of 403 fifth and sixth graders (192 males, 211 females) attending elementary schools in Gyoung-gi province. All research variables were measured using self-reported questionnaires conducted by the children concerned. Data were analyzed by means of structural equation modeling. The results indicated that parental attachment had no direct effect, but there was an indirect effect on children's social competence mediated by children's empathy. Maternal attachment influenced children's social competence relatively more than paternal attachment. As compared to parental attachment, however, children's empathy was the more influential variable when it came to social competence. These results were consistent in both genders. The results of this study emphasize that children's own characteristics such as empathy tend to be important factors in developing social competence compared to the parental role in middle childhood. Accordingly, interventions aimed at improving children's empathy need to be emphasized in order to develop children's social competence regardless of gender.

  • The purpose of this study is to describe the acknowledgement of the cause of the illness in the patients with RA. I used naturalistic inquiry as a research methodology. The purposive sampling was conducted. 23 subjects who experienced RA, lived in middle-sized city in Korea, and 19 women and 4 men. I collected data using indepth structured interview, "What is the acknowledgement of the cause of the illness?" I used inductive data analysis-such as unitizing and categorizing. This process is used constant comparative method. Summerising the results of this study, the acknowledgement of the cause of the illness are composed of physical constitution, fatalism, the attribution of physical overload, the attribution of stress, the lack of nutrition. The factors which affect the acknowledgement of the cause of the illness are composed of internal factors, external factors, environmental factors. The internal factors are the weakness of the childhood, the illness experience in the family members, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, personality, lack of nutrition. The external factors are pregnancy, delivery, role burden and conflict, economic problem. The environmental factors are humid condition, abrupt environmental change. It is needed to explaine the coping pattern according to the acknowledgement of the cause of the illness in the next research.

  • Trigeminal schwannoma is an uncommon intracranial tumor and constitutes less than 0.08-8% of all intracranial schwannoma. Trigeminal shchwannoma is even rarer in childhood and only 11 cases of trigeminal schwannoma under the age of 14 have been reported including our case. We experienced a case of trigeminal schwannoma in a 9 year-old girl without the stigmata of neurofibromatosis. She presented with a 2 week-history of right abducens nerve palsy. Magnetic resonance image demonstrated a dumbbell-shaped tumor extending into right middle and posterior fossas with a size of $60{\times}45{\times}35mm$. The tumor was successfully removed by right transzygomatic subtemporal extradural approach. Pathologic examination of the mass revealed typical features of schwannoma.

  • We report a case of huge trigeminal schwannoma in a 10-year-old boy with neurofibromatosis type II, extending into the three spaces of the left middle, posterior, and infratemporal fossa. Initially we thought the child had a solitary trigeminal schwannoma, and most of the mass was resected successfully through one-stage operation, cranio-orbito-zygomatic intradural approach. However during the follow-up of the patient we found radiographically other multiple intracranial tumors of bilateral acoustic schwannomas, right trigeminal schwannoma, and foramen magnum tumor. Eventually the patient was diagnosed as neurofibromatosis type II presenting multiple intracranial tumors. We think childhood trigeminal schwannoma, even though in the case of solitary tumor, should be considered as possible initial manifestation of neurofibromatosis type II and that careful follow-up for the possibility of occurrence of other brain tumors such as schwannomas or meningiomas is necessary.
