  • A microwave Navigational Aid system is suggested suitable for fishing boats too small to be equipped with Radar or Radio-Direction-Finder. The system proposed here is similar to that of Talking-Beacon developed in Japan, but the distinctive modification proposed is that an increase of sixteen times in peak transmitting power, thus an accompanying increase of coverage, is achieved with the same mean transmitting power as that of Japan without sacrificing the clearness of azimuth information, by adopting a pulse repetition modulation instead of pulse width modulation as in Japan system. An experimental land station transmitter of transmitting frequency of 9, 370MHz and of peak power of 35kw with a microwave beam of 1 degree in horizontal width and 7 degrees in vertical width rotating once every three minutes, and also an experimental receiver of 20-dB in sensitivity and of an assumed cost of 100 dollars, operated by a 12 volts battery source are made, and the sail test results are reported showing that a bearing infromation of an accuracy of within two degrees can be obtainable every three minutes at a distance of as far as 24 miles from the transmitter if the transmitter is located as high as 100 meters above sea-level.

  • A commercial $0.25{\mu}m$ GaN process is used to implement 6-18 GHz wideband power amplifier (PA) monolithic microwave integrated circuits (MMICs). GaN HEMTs are advantageous for enhancing RF power due to high breakdown voltages. However, the large-signal models provided by the foundry service cannot guarantee model accuracy up to frequencies close to their maximum oscillation frequency ($F_{max}$). Generally, the optimum output load point of a PA varies severely according to frequency, which creates difficulties in generating watt-level output power through the octave bandwidth. This study overcomes these issues by the development of in-house large-signal models that include a thermal model and by applying distributed L-C output load matching to reactive matched amplifiers. The proposed GaN PAs have successfully accomplished output power over 5 W through the octave bandwidth.

  • Crude Aconiti Tubers were irradiated with microwave for 5 or 10 min with or without $NaHCO_3$. Ten min-irradiation reduced the contents of aconitine and mesaconitine to the level of those of commercially available processed Aconiti tuber power which is prepared with the high pressure-high temperature technique. The contents of benzoylaconine of the 10 min-irradiated Aconiti tubers were also comparable to those of commerciallized processed Aconiti tuber powder. However, irradiation with 1% $NaHCO_3$ soln. resulted in the drastic reduction of all the three above alkaloids.

  • In this paper, we propose a microwave hyperthermic lipolysis method to reduce subcutaneous fat without skin burn using external RF antenna. Since skin is closer to the antenna and has higher conductivity compared to the fat beneath, the temperature of the skin rises higher than that of the fat when the external antenna illuminates EM energy into a body, which may cause skin burn. In order to avoid the damages on skin, a skin cooling system is employed to the external antenna. The operating frequency is set at 5.8 GHz which is one of the ISM bands, to concentrate EM power efficiently on fat and not to heat up the muscle behind the fat. The operation time and RF power level has been determined based on experimental results with pork. The feasibility of the proposed method was shown by applying the method to the rat.

  • Tracking and detecting targets by the microwave seeker is affected by the clutter reflecting from the earth's surface. In order to detect retreating targets in look-down scenario, which appear in the sidelobe clutter (SLC) region, in the microwave seeker of high pulse repetition frequency (HPRF) mode, it is necessary to understand statistical characteristics of the surface SLC. Statistical analysis of SLC has been conducted for several kinds of the surface using data obtained by the captive flight test of the microwave seeker in the HPRF mode. The probability density function (PDF) fitting is conducted for several kinds and conditions of the surface. PDFs and PDF parameters, which best describe statistical distribution of the SLC power, are estimated. By using the estimated PDFs and PDF parameters, analyses for setting the target-detection thresholds, which give a desired level of target-detection false alarm probability, are made. These analysis materials for statistical characteristics of SLC power and the target-detection threshold can be used in various fields, such as development of a target-detection method, the constant false alarm rate processing.

  • Unlike general microwave, QRD (Quadratic Residue Diffusor) Microwave used in this study is known as a new technology that enhances the sterilization effect with low power because it is possible to induce the average sterilization by changing wavelength phase difference. Therefore, basic research was conducted on the function that could sterilize culture media for plant factory by using environmentally friendly and low energy consuming QRD Microwave. The results are as follows: It was confirmed that there was no external deformation in the polyurethane foam and rock wool medium when changing the microwave level between 2 and 8 kW in different water content of culture media. However, PDA solid media at 2 kW were not dissolved in 60 and 180 seconds. All of the media were dissolved in other processing. There was little difference in the microwave irradiation level and surface temperature of the strain according to the processing time between Bacillus sp. and Burkholderia sp. In the sterility test according to the microwave irradiation level and processing time, it was confirmed that both Bacillus sp. and Burkholderia sp. grew in the microwave level 2 kW regardless of time. In the microwave level 6 kW, all experimental groups except the processing of Burkholderia sp. for 60 seconds were sterilized, and all of Bacillus sp. was killed in the all experimental groups. In the microwave level 8 kW, it was confirmed that both Bacillus sp. and Burkholderia sp. were sterilized regardless of time. The temperature in microwave-processed media after contaminating strains to each medium was maintained at more than 100 in polyurethane foam and rock wool medium after 60 seconds. In general, it was shown that it was possible to sterilize after 60 seconds. Therefore, it is considered that Bacillus sp. and Burkholderia sp. which are the biggest problems in the plant factory can be adequately sterilized by QRD Microwave used in this study.

  • The 4 by 4 microstrip phased array antenna designed and radiation characteristics are studied. The design frequency was chosen to be 5.8GHz. Chebyshev ratio was achieved by unequal power divider and Wilkinson power divider. The ratio of current at each port is 1 : 2.6 : 2.6 : 1 and then side lobe level is less than -30 dB. It is shown that the radiation beam direction can be changed up to 30。 by control the phase at each port. The result can be used to design electrically controllable microwave scanning antennas.

  • A periodic mesoporous organosilica material was synthesized by microwave heating (PMO-M) using 1,2-bis(trimethoxysilyl)ethane as a precursor in a cationic surfactant solution, and textural properties were compared with those of the product produced by conventional convection heating (PMO-C). These synthesized materials were characterized using XRD, TEM/SEM, N2 adsorption isotherm, 29Si and 13C NMR, and TGA, which confirmed their good structural orders and clear arrangements of uniform 3D-channels. Synthesis time was reduced from 21 h in PMO-C to 2-4 h in PMO-M. PMO-M was made of spherical particles of 1.5-2.2 m m size, whereas PMO-C was made of decaoctahedron-shaped particles of ca. 8.0 m m size. Effect of synthesis temperature, time, and heating mode on the PMO particle morphology was examined. The particle size of PMO-M could be controlled by changing the heating rate by adjusting microwave power level. PMO-M demonstrated improved separation of selected organic compounds compared to PMO-C in a reversed phase HPLC experiment. Ti-grafted PMO-M also resulted in higher conversion in liquid phase cyclohexene epoxidation than by Ti-PMO-C.
