  • PZT ceramics were rapidly sintered in a 2.45GHz microwave oven without no addition of lead to the atmosphere and afterwards the piezoelectric properties were investigated. The specimens were sintered between 1050 and 1130$^{\circ}C$ with the sintering time totaling less then 20 minutes, reducing processing times and costs from those of established methods. The relative dielectric constant, mechanical quality factor and electro-mechanical coupling factor of the PZT specimens at 1090$^{\circ}C$ were 1990, 80,0.53 respectively, which is comparable to conventionally sintered values.

  • We have studied the effect of sintering conditions on the long-range order parameter of the 1 : 2 cation ordering in Ba(Mg/sub 1/3/Nb/sub 2/3/)O₃microwave dielectrics prepared through a columbite precursor method. It is found that the order parameter depends strongly on the sintering conditions. As the heat-treatment time increases at 1350℃, the long-range order parameter decreases. When sintered at 1500℃ for 4 hours, BMN shows a high long-range order parameter of 0.94.

Investigation on Lead-Borosilicate Glass Based Dielectrics for LTCC (Lead-Borosilicate Glass계 LTCC용 유전체에 대한 고찰)

  • The effects of lead-borosilicate glass frits on the sintering behavior and microwave dielectric properties of ceramic-glass composites were investigated as functions of glass composition of glass addition ($10{\sim}50vol%$), softening point (Ts) of the glass, and sintering temperature of the composites ($500{\sim}900^{\circ}C$ for 2 h). The addition of 50 vol% glass ensured successful sintering below $900^{\circ}C$. Sintering characteristics of the composites were well described in terms of Ts. PbO addition in to the glass enhanced the reaction with $Al_{2}O_3$ to form liquid phase and $PbAl_{2}Si_{2}O_8$, which was responsible to lower Ts. Dielectric constant(${\epsilon}_r$), $Q{\times}f_0$ and temperature coefficient of resonant frequency (${\tau}_f$) of the composite with 50 vol% glass contents ($B_{2}O_{3}:PbO:SiO_{2}:CaO:Al_{2}O_3$ = 5:40:45:5:5) demonstrated 8.5, 6,000 GHz, $-70\;ppm/^{\circ}C$, respectively, which is applicable to substrate requiring a low dielectric constant. When the same glass composition was applied sinter $MgTiO_3\;and\;TiO_2,\;at\;900^{\circ}C$ (50 vol% glass in total), the properties were 23.8, 4,000 GHz, $-65ppm/^{\circ}C$ and 31.1, 2,500 GHz, $+80ppm/^{\circ}C$ respectively, which is applicable to filter requiring an intermidiate dielectric constant.

Structural and Microwave Dielectric Properties of $Mg_{5}B_{4}O_{15}$ (B=Ta, Nb) Ceramics with Sintering Temperature (소결온도에 따른 $Mg_{5}B_{4}O_{15}$ (B=Ta, Nb) 세라믹스의 구조 및 마이크로파 유전 특성)

  • In this study, structural and micowave dielectric properties of the $Mg_{5}B_{4}O_{15}$ (B=Ta, Nb) cation-deficient perovskite ceeramics. The specimens are prepared through the solid-state route. According to the XRD pattern, $Mg_{4}Ta_{2}O_9$ and $MgTa_{2}O_6$ phase exist in calcined and sintered $Mg_{5}Ta_{4}O_{15}$ powder. Also $Mg_{5}Ta_{4}O_{15}$ phase added with increasing sintering temperature. In the case of calcined and sintered $Mg_{5}Nb_{4}O_{15}$ powder, single phase of $Mg_{5}Nb_{4}O_{15}$ were appeared. The bulk density and quality factor of the $Mg_{5}B_{4}O_{15}$ (B=Ta, Nb) ceramics were increased with sinteming temperature in $1400^{\circ}C{\sim}1450^{\circ}C$, but these were decreased in another sintering temperature. Dielectric constant of the $Mg_{5}Ta_{4}O_{15}$ ceramics was increased continuously with increasing of sintering temperature. And the dielectric constant of the $Mg_{5}Nb_{4}O_{15}$ ceramics was increased in $1400^{\circ}C{\sim}1450^{\circ}C$ but decreased in $1475^{\circ}C$. In the case of the $Mg_{5}Ta_{4}O_{15}$ and $Mg_{5}Nb_{4}O_{15}$ ceramics sintered at $1450^{\circ}C$ for 5h, the dielectric constant, quality factor, and temperature coefficient of the resonant frequency (TCRF) were 8.2, 259,473 GHz, -10.91 $ppm/^{\circ}C$ and 14, 37,350 GHz, -52.3 $ppm/^{\circ}C$, respectively.

  • We investigated the physical properties of stoichiometric and non-stoichiometric oxide doped complex perovskite, $Ba(Zn_{1/3}Ta_{2/3})O_3$ ceramics and their impacts on the microwave dielectric performances using various characterization techniques such as X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and network analyzer. According to the measurement of lattice constant changes, anomalous lattice volume contraction of $ZrO_2$ doped $Ba(Zn_{1/3}Ta_{2/3})O_3$ sample only showed the dielectric quality factor enhancements, which was due to the lattice volume contraction as well as the 1:2 B-site cation ordering. In addition, NiO doping was useful to the stabilization of temperature coefficient of resonance frequency.

Microstructure vs. Dielectric Property Correlation in the Stoichiometric Sillenites

  • Bi/sub 12/SiO/sub 20/, Bi/sub 12/GeO/sub 20/ and Bi/sub 12/O/sub 20/ compounds with the sillenite crystal structure were synthesized and sintered into the dense ceramic bodies. An analyses of the microwave dielectric properties of the Si, Ge and Ti sillenites showed a permittivity (e) of ∼40 and a negative temperature coefficient of the resonant frequency for all analogues (from -20 to -40 ppm/K). The Qxf value of the Si and Ge sillenites was measured to be ∼8.000 GHz. The Ti analogue shows a significantly lower Qxf value(∼2.500 GHz) and is sensitive to the heat-treatment conditions. By increasing the sintering temperature the size of the grains increases, which correlates with an increase in the Qxf value.

  • The frequenc dependence of magnetic permeability($\mu$r) and dielectric constant($\varepsilon$r) in MHz-GHz frequency range and their relationships with microwave absorbing properties were investigated in sintered and composite Ni-Zn ferrites, respectively. It was confirmed that zero reflection condition was required the real parts of permeability and permittivity in sintered specimen, and the complex permeability, permittivity and dielectric loss tangent in composite specimen. The real part of permittivity varied with the replacement of nickel by manganese in sintered Ni-Zn ferrite. Therefore, we could control the matching frequency and matching thickness.

  • Effects of sintering temperature and time on relative permittivity $\varepsilon$$\_$r/, unloaded quality factor Q$.$f and temperature coefficient of resonant frequency $\tau$$\_$f/ of dielectric resonator materials produced from commercial ZST powder were investigated in some detail. Q$.$f values, as determined from cavity perturbation method at 1.6 GHz, gradually increased with sintering temperature reaching the maximum at 1420$^{\circ}C$. However, bulk density and relative permittivity values, which increased with temperature, started to decrease above 1380$^{\circ}C$. In addition, Q$.$f values slightly increased with sintering time at the sintering temperature of 1300$^{\circ}C$∼1380$^{\circ}C$, while bulk density and relative permittivity values were approximately constant. It was also found that $\tau$$\_$f/ values were not affected by sintering temperature and time within the experimental conditions used.

  • The variation of magnetic permeability and dielectric constant and their relationship with microwave absorbing properties are investigated in sintered Ni-Zn ferrite. Toroid specimens of ${(Ni_{0.5}Zn_{0.5}O)}_{1-y}{(Fe_{2}O_{3})}_{1+y}$ ferrites are prepared by conventional ceramic processing technique. The large change in magnetic permeability is observed by the variation of excess $Fe_{2}O_{3}$ in the Ni-Zn ferrites. The more the iron-excess from y=0.04 to y=0.12, the lower value of both $\mu_{r}'$ and $\mu_{r}"$ is observed. However dielectric permittivity increases with the increase of the increase of the excess $Fe_{2}O_{3}$. The control of permittivity is realized by nitrogen sintering atmosphere and excess $Fe_{2}O_{3}$ respectively.

  • $CaTiO_3$-$ La(Mg_{2/3}Ta_{1/3})O_3$ solid solutions were prepared in order to improve the microwave dielectric properties of $CaTiO_3$. XRD analysis revealed that the crystal structure of the solid solution changed from orthorhombic to monoclinic as the amount of $ La(Mg_{2/3}Ta_{1/3})O_3$increased. When x=0.3 in (1-x)$CaTiO_3+xLa(Mg_{2/3}Ta_{1/3})O_3$, the dielectric constant was 49, the temperature coefficient of resonance frequency was +$14ppm/^{\circ}C$, and $Q \times f_0$ was 17000.
