  • In this study, microstructures and mechanical properties of repair materials using calcium sulfoaluminate (CSA) and/or amorphous calcium aluminate (ACA) cements were experimentally investigated. By XRD ansysis, the hydrates formed in repair materials were identified. In addition, the microstructures of repair materials were visually examined through SEM observation. Setting time of mortars made with repair materials were measured. The strength development and ultrasonic velocity of the mortars were also evaluated at the predetermined ages. As a result, it seems that ACA showed a benefit effect with respect to mechanical properties of mortars.

  • This study was undertaken to clarify the microstructure of the different IPS Empress ingots by etching and to observe the change of leucite crystal structure according to subsequent heat treatment and the crystal distribution according to sprue types(${\phi}2.8mm$, single sprue; ${\phi}1.8mm$, double sprue) by scanning electron microscopy. IPS Empress T1, O1 ingots used for staining technique, and Dentin(A2) ingots used for layering technique were selected for this study. To observe the microstructures of these ingots before pressing, the specimens were prepared in splinters($3{\times}3{\times}3mm$) taken from the original ingots. And to estimate crystal distribution and microstructural change by sprue type and subsequent heat treatment. the specimens($3{\times}3{\times}3mm$) were heat-pressed through the two types of sprues with different diameters and numbers, and all specimens were fired according to the recommended firing schedule. The observed surface was ground with waterproof papers($#800{\sim}#1800$) on the grind polisher and was cleaned ultrasonically. All specimen were etched with 0.5% hydrofluoric acid. After etching, the surface was treated by ion sputter coating for SEM observation at an accelerating voltage of 20kV. In all specimens, the central area of ground surface was observed because there was less difference in microstructure between the peripheral area and the central area. The results were as follows ; 1. In the microstructure according to the ingot type, there was a wide difference between the staining (T1,O1) and layering(Dentin A2) ingots, but there was not a considerable difference between the T1 ingot and the O1 ingot for staining technique. 2. In all specimens, the crystal dispersion of IPS Empress ceramic using double sprue was significantly more scattered than that of IPS Empress ceramic using single sprue. The degree of scattering was strongest in the Dentin(A2) specimen and weakest in the O1 ingot. 3. In the microstructural change according to the subsequent heat treatment, all of ingots had some microcracks in the inside of the leucite crystal and the glass matrix after pressing. The inner splinters of the leucite crystal became smaller, and more microcracks occurred in the glass matrix due to increasing heat treatment times. 4. The size of leucite crystals varied from $1{\mu}m\;to\;5{\mu}m$. The mean size of mature crystals was about $5{\mu}m$. The form of the crystal was similar to a circle when it was smaller and similar to an ellipse when it was larger.

  • The microwave dielectric properties and microstructures of the Complex Perovskite (1-x)$(Li_{1/2}Sm_{1/2})TiO_3-x (Na_{1/2}Sm_{1/2})TiO_3$(LNST) system were investigated using the X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). LNST had not only the antiphase tilting of oxygen octahedron but also the inphase tilting of oxygen octahedron and the antiparallel shift of cations. Also, when $0.0{\leq}x{\leq}0.4$, LNST had the vacancy ordering of A-sites because of the evaporation of Li ions. From the observation of the microstructure, abnormal grain growth phenomena were observed over the whole range of x. The temperature coefficient of resonant frequency ($T_{cf}$) of the $({Li_{1/2}}^{+1}{Sm_{1/2}}^{+3})TiO_3$(LST) system has a large negative value ($-220ppm/^{\circ}C$) but the $({Na_{1/2}}^{+1}{Sm_{1/2}}^{+3})TiO_3$(NST) system which substituted $Na^{+1}$ has a large positive value ($+173ppm/^{\circ}C$). The dielectric properties of ${\varepsilon}_r=103,\;Q*f_{0}=3,700GHz$ and $T_{cf}=+50ppm/^{\circ}C$ at 4GHz were obtained when x =0.4.

  • In the 6th and 7th centuries, 5 iron artifacts excavated form the Baekje Stone Tomb in Guryong-ri site, Ungcheon, Boryeong, were studied. The sample were metal microscopic observation, SEM-EDS analysis and Raman micro-spectroscopy analysis were conducted to understand the metallurgical characteristics. The microstructure observation showed the presence of ferrite and pearlite throughout, and differences in carbon content existed depending on the direction. Non-metallic inclusions were in the form of long lines, and most of them were wüstite, fayalite. It is indicated that the artifacts were forge welded using hypoeutectoid steel, with signs of carburizing and decarburizing processes. Some crystals with high P2O5, TiO2, CaO content were identified as sarcopside, ulvöspinel, and perovskite, respectively, through Raman spectroscopy. A comparison of the results with previous studies on the sites of Bujang-ri site in Seosan and Bongseon-ri site in Seocheon, which are adjacent sites in the coastal area, revealed that, while heat treatment technology was available, the artifacts were not heat-treated considering the purpose for use for these artifacts. The chemical composition of the non-metallic inclusions P2O5, TiO2, CaO were plotted in proportions to SiO2 and compared with adjacent sites. Considering that the P2O5/SiO2 ratio was widely distributed, the refining technology was not uniform. In addition, the TiO2/SiO2 ratio was found to be higher than that of other sites, meaning that a titanium-containing ore was used to manufacture the artifacts, unlike in surrounding sites, but it is not detected in all artifacts, so it may have been affected by various factors such as furnace walls in addition to raw materials. Although slag formers were used, considering the CaO/SiO2 ratio and the (Al2O3/SiO2)/(CaO/SiO2) ratio, which appear to be similar to the surrounding sites, but it is possible that CaO containing raw ore was used because it is also affected by the components of raw ore. As a result of the study, it is highly likely that ore different from that of the surrounding sites was used for production, but a more comprehensive comparative study with the surrounding sites is needed in the future.

  • This study tried to examine the suitability of strip casting process such as PFC (Planar Flow Casting) method for soldering Au-Sn strip. The effect of heat treatment on the tensile behavior and mechanical properties of an Au-Sn strip was investigated through tensile test, micro hardness test, X-ray diffraction (XRD), SEM, and TEM observations. It was apparent that 20-mm width Au-Sn strip could be well produced by using planar flow casting process. Tensile results showed that tensile strength increased from 338.3MPa to 310MPa and plastic strain improved from 0% to 1.5% with heat treatment ($170^{\circ}C$/70 hrs.). The microstructure of Au-Sn strip mainly consisted of two phases; $Au_5Sn(\zeta)$ and AuSn($\sigma$). It was also found that inhomogeneous amorphous local structure continuously changed to the homogeneous two phases microstructure with heat treatment. The fractographical observation after tensile test indicated the cleavage fracture mode of as-casted Au-Sn strip. On the other hand, the heat treated Au-Sn strip showed that fracture propagated along interface between brittle AuSn and ductile $Au_5Sn$ phases. The deformation behavior of strip casted Au-Sn alloy with microstructural evolution and the improve method for ductility of this alloy was also suggested.

  • The activity of living microorganism directly or indirectly affects to the biomineralization in sediments and rocks that display the unique biotic structure. Minerals in the biotic structures showed unique properties and bypass the thermodynamic and kinetic barriers. Therefore, investigations on the biotically induced microstructure is essential to identify the new mineral formation mechanism by analyzing crystal structures and morphology at a nano-scale. The significant implication as well as advantages of using scanning electron microscopy to characterize the biotic structures were discussed in this paper for the examples of hydrothermal vent area microbial mat and deep-sea ferromanganese crust sample.

  • The glass and glass-ceramics containing EAF dust $30{\sim}70\;wt%$ were fabricated and the dependance of physical properties upon crystal phases and microstructure formed was studied. The crystallization behavior of glass and glass-ceramics containing various contents of EAF dust composing of mainly $Fe_2O_3$ and ZnO was analyzed by crystal identification and microstructure observation. The glass specimen with EAF dust 30 wt% showed a typical amorphous pattern in XRD results and the specimen with above 30 wt% EAF dust had some un-dissolved crystals which was originated from EAF dust. The all glass-ceramics had franklinite, willemite and augite crystal phases. The density of glass-ceramics was higher than that of same composition glass, and it increased with EAF dust contents. In addition, the thermal and mechanical properties of glass-ceramics were always higher than those of glasses. In other words, the thermal expansion coefficient of glass increased with EAF dust contents while it decreased for the glass-ceramics. The vickers hardness for the glass and glass-ceramics increased with EAF dust content, the glass-ceramics always being higher those of glass of same composition.

  • Ternary Al2O3.ZrO2.Y2O3 samples with a eutecticcomposition were prepared by slow cooling. The microstructural evolution wasobserved with X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM). TheSEM observation of the ternary samples agreed with the XRD with a completion ofcrystallisation by slow cooling. The target materials commonly have 'cantaloupe skin' microstructures as shown inthe previous studies by Han et al. The nanocomposite may have experienceddifferent cooling rates with two different microstructures, near the surfacehaving experienced optimal conditions for the eutectic reaction during theircooling and thus formed the eutectic microstructure, near the centre havingexperienced a slower cooling rate. The crystallised eutectic ternary Al2O3.ZrO2.Y2O3 system had three different phaseswith a 3Y2O3. 5Al2O3 (yttrium.aluminiumgarnet phase), an alumina phase formed by the eutectic reaction, and a solidsolution of ZrO2 and Y2O3.

  • This study presents the ultrasonic nonlinearity of AISI316 austenitic stainless steels subjected to longterm isothermal aging. These steels are attractive materials for use in industrial mechanical structures because of their strength at high-temperatures and their chemical stability. The test materials were subjected to accelerated heat-treatment in an electrical furnace for a predetermined aging duration. The variations in the ultrasonic nonlinearity and microstructural damage were carefully evaluated through observation of the microstructure. The ultrasonic nonlinearity stiffly dropped after aging for up to 1000 h and, then, monotonously decreased. The polygonal shape of the initial grain structures changed to circular, especially as the annealing twins in the grains dissolved and disappeared. The delta ferrite on the grain boundaries could not be observed at 1000 h of aging, and these continuously transformed into their sigma phases. Consequently, in the intial aging period, the rapid decrease in the ultrasonic nonlinearity was caused by voids, dislocations, and twin annihilation. The continuous monotonic decrease in the ultrasonic nonlinearity after the first drop resulted from the generation of $Cr_{23}C_6$ precipitates and ${\sigma}$ phases.
