Inductively coupled plasma magnetron sputtering (ICPMS) has the advantage of being able to dramatically improve coating properties by increasing the plasma ionization rate and the ion bombardment effect during deposition. Thus, this paper presents the comparative results of CrN films deposited by direct current magnetron sputtering (dcMS) and ICPMS systems. The structure, microstructure, and mechanical and corrosive properties of the CrN coatings were investigated by X-ray diffractometry, scanning electron microscopy, nanoindentation, and corrosion-resistance measurements. The as-deposited CrN films by ICPMS grew preferentially on a 200 plane compared to dcMS on a 111 plane. As a result, the films deposited by ICPMS had a very compact microstructure with high hardness. The nanoindentation hardness reached 19.8 GPa, and 13.5 GPa by dcMS. The corrosion current density of CrN film prepared by ICPMS was about 9.8 × 10-6 mA/cm2, which was 1/470 of 4.6 × 10-3 mA/cm2, the corrosion current density of CrN film prepared by dcMS.

The synergistic effect of ZrC nanoparticle pining and Re solution in W matrix on the thermal stability of tungsten was studied by investigating the evolution of the microstructure, hardness and tensile properties after annealing in a temperature range of 1000-1700 ℃. The results of metallography, electron backscatter diffraction pattern and Vickers micro-hardness indicate that the rolled W-1wt%Re-0.5 wt% ZrC alloy has a higher recrystallization temperature (1600 ℃-1700 ℃) than that of the rolled pure W (1200 ℃), W-0.5 wt%ZrC (1300 ℃), W-0.5 wt%HfC (1400-1500 ℃) and W-K-3wt%Re alloy fabricated by the same technology. The molecular dynamics simulation results indicated that solution Re atoms in W matrix can slow down the self-diffusion of W atoms and form dragging effect to delay the growth of W grain, moreover, the diffusion coefficient decrease with increasing Re content. In addition, the ZrC nanoparticles can pin the grain boundaries and dislocations effectively, preventing the recrystallization. Therefore, synergistic effect of solid solution Re element and dispersed ZrC nanoparticles significantly increase recrystallization temperature.

In this paper, we compared the properties of the chromium nitride (CrN) films prepared by inductively coupled plasma magnetron sputtering (ICPMS). As a comparison, CrN film prepared by a direct current magnetron sputtering (dcMS) is also studied. The crystal structure, surface and cross-sectional microstructure and composite properties of the as-deposited CrN films are compared by x-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, nanoindentation tester and corrosion resistance tester, respectively. It is found that the as-deposited CrN films by ICPMS grew preferentially on (200) plane when compared with that by dcMS on (111) plane. As a result, the films deposited by ICPMS have a very compact microstructure with high hardness: the nanoindentation hardness reached 19.8 GPa and 13.5 GPa by dcMS, respectively. Besides, the residual stress of CrN films prepared by ICPMS is also relatively large. After measuring the corrosion resistance, the corrosion current of films prepared by ICPMS was three order of magnitude smaller than that of CrN films deposited by dcMS.
AZ31 magnesium alloy was used to manufacture a thin plate using a melt drag method. The effects of roll speed, molten metal temperature, and molten metal height, which are the basic factors of the melt drag method, on the surface shape, the thickness of the thin plate, Vickers hardness, and microstructure of the thin plate were investigated. It was possible to manufacture AZ31 magnesium alloy thin plate at the roll speed range of 1 to 90 m/min. The thickness of the thin plate, manufactured while changing only the roll speed, was about 1.8 to 8.8 mm. The shape of the solidified roll surface was affected by two conditions, the roll speed and the molten metal height, and the Vickers hardness of the manufactured magnesium alloy thin plate value ranged from Hv38~Hv60. The microstructure of the thin plate produced by this process was an equiaxed crystal and showed a uniform grain size distribution. The grain size was greatly affected by the contact state between the molten metal and the solidification roll, and the amount of reactive solids and liquids scraped at the same time as the thin plate. The average grain size of the thin plate fabricated in the range of these experimental conditions changed to about 50-300 ㎛.
Boron carbide (B4C) is highly significant in the production of lightweight protective materials when added to aluminum owing to its exceptional mechanical properties. In this study, a method for fabricating Al-B4C composites using high-energy ball milling and directed energy deposition (DED) is presented. Al-4 wt.% B4C composites were fabricated under 21 different laser conditions to analyze the microstructure and mechanical properties at different values of laser power and scan speeds. The composites fabricated at a laser power of 600 W and the same scan speed exhibited the highest hardness and generated the fewest pores. In contrast, the composites fabricated at a laser power of 1000 W exhibited the lowest hardness and generated a significant number of large pores. This can be explained by the influence of the microstructure on the energy density at different values of laser power.

The high velocity oxygen fuel(HVOF) thermal spray is a kind of surface modification techniques to produce the sprayed coating layer. This process is to form the coating layer after spraying the powder to molten or semi-molten state by the ultra-high speed at the high-temperature heat source and conflicting with a substrate. The efficiency of thermal spraying is dropped, however, because the semi-molten powder in a spray process become a factor that degrades the mechanical property by the formed pore within the coating layer. Therefore, it is necessary to melt completely the thermal spray powder in order to produce the coating layer with an optimal adhesive force. In this study, to improve the wear resistance, corrosion resistance and heat resistance, the plungers of high-speed and ultra-high pressure reciprocating hydraulic pumps used in ironworks are manufactured with STS $420J_2$ and are coated by the powders of WC-Co-Cr and WC-Cr-Ni including the WC of high hardness using a HVOF thermal sprayer developed in this laboratory. These are called by the surface-modified plungers. The surface roughness, hardness, and surface and cross-sectional microstructure of these two surface-modified and conventional ceramic plungers are measured and compared before operation with after operation for 100 days. It is found that the values of centerline average surface roughness and maximum height for conventional ceramic plunger are 9.5 to 10.8 and 5.2 to 5.7 times higher than those of surface-modified ones coated by WC-Co-Cr and WC-Cr-Ni because the fine tops and bottoms on surface roughness curve of conventional ceramic plunger are approximately 100 times higher than those of surface-modified ones. In addition, the pores and scratches in the surface microstructure are considerably formed in the order of conventional ceramic, WC-Cr-Ni and WC-Co-Cr surface-modified plungers. The greater the WC content of high hardness powder is less the change in the plunger surface.
The microstructures and the creep rupture properties of dissimilar welds between the Ni-based superalloy Inconel 740H and the non-stabilized austenitic stainless steel TP316H have been characterized. The welds were produced by shielded metal arc (SMA) welding process with the AWS A5.11 Class ENiCrFe-3 filler metal, commonly known as Inconel 182 superalloy. Postweld heat treatment at $760^{\circ}C$ for 4 hours was conducted to form ${\gamma}^{\prime}$ strengthener in Inconel 740H. The austenitic weld metal produced by Inconel 182 had a dendritic microstructure, and grew epitaxially from the both sides of Inconel 740H and TP316H base metals. Since both Inconel 740H and TP316H did not undergo any solid-state transformation during welding process, there were no heat-affected-zone (HAZ) sub-regions and the coarsoned grains near the weld interface were limited to a narrow region. The hardness of Inconel 182 weld metal was ~220 Hv. The gradual hardness decrease was detected at HAZ of TP316H, and the TP316H base metal displayed the lowest hardness value (~180 Hv) whilst the Inconel 740H showed the highest hardness value (~400 Hv). Fracture after creep occurred at the center of weld metal, regardless of creep condition. It was found that during creep the cracks initiated and propagated along interdendritic regions and grain boundaries at which Laves particles enriched in Nb, Si and Cr were present. The appropriate design of weld metal was discussed to suppress the creep-induced cracking of the present dissimilar weld.
This study aims to extract manufacturing techniques by analysing metallurgical characteristics of the cast-iron pot from Bubjusa, examining corrosion status and microstructure with a optical microscope, SEM-EDS, micro vickers hardness tester and XRD. The microstructure analysis has presented that ferrite and partial portion of pearlite exist within the corroded outer layer. The analysis of the inner layer revealed that there is pearlite and graphite of feather shape. The one of the middle layer, which is placed between outer and inner layer, showed that corrosion has been heavily developed. Micro vickers hardness values range from 217Hv to 698Hv in constituent layers and such values lie within the ranges of the ancient iron relics. The result of EDS analysis for each microstructure presented that the outer layer has been more decarbonized than the inner layer. XRD analysis of iron corrosion compound revealed that Goethite and Hematite had been produced from the corrosive process of iron. The study concludes that the large iron pot was made by casting technique, and microstructure of inner layer had a gray cast iron. Outer layer has been decarbonized through repetitive process of heating and cooling. This results can be used as fundamental data for comparative study to reveal manufacturing techniques of large cast-iron pot.

Hyper-eutectic Al-17.5wt%Si alloy bars of 25 mm in diameter were produced by horizontal continuous casting process. Effect of both casting speed and primary Si refiner (AlCuP) on microstructure and mechanical properties of the alloy have been investigated. With increasing a weight fraction of AlCuP, the average primary Si size decreased down to $20 {\mu}m$. On the contrary, there was no notable changes of microstructure and primary Si size according to the casting speed in the experimental range of this study, indicating that the cooling rate should be increased to optimize and refine microstructure and primary Si size. The experimental results including hardness, tensile strength and wear resistance tests of the processed alloy bars showed a good possibility to develop the high performance wear resistant Al-Si alloy.
Effect of surface roughness and microstructure of the specimen on tensile properties of Ni-Al bronze casting has been investigated. surface roughnesses of the tensile test specimen of interest are in range of 0.1 to 2.0 ${\mu}m$ in Ra obtained by changing machining conditions. Fracture of the Ni-Al bronze casting initiated at the surface and propagated in a brittle manner during tensile tests. Tensile elongation value of the casting was strongly dependent on the surface roughness range studied, while tensile and yield strengths were almost independent on it. The elongation value was almost constant up to the surface roughness of 1.0 ${\mu}m$ in Ra, and then decreased in a linear manner with an increase in Ra value up to 2.0 ${\mu}m$. However, tensile strength and hardness were strongly dependent on the microstructure, especially ${\alpha}$ phase fraction, and were decreased with increasing ${\alpha}$ phase fraction in microstructure. It is, therefore, recommended that decrease of surface roughness up to 1.0 ${\mu}m$ in Ra, shrinkage porosity and ${\alpha}$ phase are required in order to obtain good tensile properties for Ni-Al bronze casting.
