Effect of Interlayer on TiN and CrN Thin Films of STS 420 Hybrid-Deposited by AlP and DC Magnetron Sputtering (AIP 와 스퍼터링으로 복합증착된 420 스테인리스강의 TiN과 CrN 박막에 미치는 중간층의 영향)

  • Effects of interlayer and the combination of different coating methods on the mechanical and corrosion behaviors of TiN and CrN coated on 420 stainless steel have been studied. STS 420 specimen were tempered at $300^{\circ}C$ for 1 hr in vacuum furnace. The TiN and CrN thin film with 2 ${\mu}m$ thickness were coated by arc ion plating and DC magnetron sputtering following the formation of interlayer for pure titanium and chromium with 0.2 ${\mu}m$ thickness. The microstructure and surface analysis of the specimen were conducted by using SEM, XRD and roughness tester. Mechanical properties such as hardness and adhesion also were examined. XRD patterns of TiN thin films showed that preferred TiN (111) orientation was observed. The peaks of CrN (111) and $Cr_2N$ (300) were only observed in CrN thin films deposited by arc ion plating. Both TiN and CrN deposited by arc ion plating had the higher adhesion and hardness compared to those formed by magnetron sputtering. The specimen of TiN and CrN on which interlayer deposited by magnetron sputtering and thin film deposited by arc ion plating had the highest adhesion with 22.2 N and 19.2 N. respectively. TiN and CrN samples shown the most noble corrosion potentials when the interlayers were deposited by using magnetron sputtering and the metal nitrides were deposited by using arc ion plating. The most noble corrosion potentials of TiN and CrN were found to be approximately -170 and -70 mV, respectively.

  • In this study, welding of pure titanium was carried out by using a continuous wave fiber laser with a maximum output of 6.3 kW. Because brittle regions form easily in titanium as a result of oxidation or nitriding, the weld must be protected from the atmosphere by using an appropriate shielding gas. Experiments were performed by changing the type and the flow rate of shielding gases to obtain the optimal shielding condition, and the weldability was then evaluated. The degree of oxidation and nitriding was distinguished by observing the color of beads, and weld microstructure was observed by using an optical microscope and a scanning electron microscope. The mechanical properties of the weld were examined by measuring hardness. When the weld was oxidized or nitrified, the bead color was gray or yellow, and the oxygen or nitrogen content in the bead surface and overall weld tended to be high, as a result of which the hardness of the weld was thrice that of the base metal. A sound silvery white bead was obtained by using Ar as the shielding gas.

Effect of Changes in Condition of Ammonia Gas Addition on the Surface Layer Microstructure and Porosity during Austenitic Nitriding of Low Carbon Steels (저 탄소강의 오스테나이트 질화 시 암모니아 가스첨가 조건변화가 표면층 조직 및 기공변화에 미치는 영향)

  • Low carbon steel (S20C steel) and SPCC steel sheet have been austenitic nitrided at $700^{\circ}C$ in a closed pit type furnace by changing the flow rate of ammonia gas and heat treating time. When the flow rate of ammonia gas was low, the concentration of residual ammonia appeared low and the hardness value of transformed surface layer was high. The depth of the surface layer, however, was shallow. With increasing the concentration of residual ammonia by raising up the ammonia gas flow, both the depth of the surface layer and the pore depth increased, while the maximum hardness of the surface layer decreased. By introducing a large amount of ammonia gas in a short time, a deep surface layer with minimal pores on the outermost surface was obtained. In this experiment, while maintaining 10~12% of residual ammonia, the flow rate of inlet ammonia gas, 7 liter/min, was introduced at $700^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour. In this condition, the thickness of the surface layer without pores appeared about $60{\mu}m$ in S20C steel and $30{\mu}m$ in SPCC steel plate. Injecting additional methane gas (carburizing gas) to this condition played a deteriorating effect due to promoting the formation of vertical pores in the surface layer. For $1^{st}$ transformed surface layer for S20C steel, maintaining 10~12% residual ammonia condition via austenitic nitriding process resulted in ${\varepsilon}$ phase with relatively high nitrogen concentration (just below 4.23 wt.%N) among the mixed phases of ${\varepsilon}+{\gamma}$. The ${\varepsilon}$ phase was formed a specific orientation perpendicular to the surface. For $2^{nd}$ transformed layer for S20C steel, ${\gamma}$ phase was rather dominant (just above 2.63 wt.%N). For SPCC steel sheet, there appeared three phases, ${\gamma}$, ${\alpha}(M)$ and weak ${\varepsilon}$ phase. The nitrogen concentration would be approximately 2.6 wt.% in these phases condition.

Effect of Post Heat Treatment Temperature on Interface Diffusion Layer and Bonding Force in Roll Cladded Ti/Mild steel/Ti Material (압연 클래드된 Ti/Mild steel/Ti 재의 계면확산층과 접합력에 미치는 후열처리온도의 영향)

  • The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of post heat treatment on bonding properties of roll cladded Ti/MS/Ti materials. First grade Ti sheets and SPCC mild steel sheets were prepared and then Ti/MS/Ti clad materials were fabricated by a cold rolling and post heat treatment process. Microstructure and point analysis of the Ti/MS interfaces were performed using the SEM and EDX Analyser. Diffusion bonding was observed at the interfaces of Ti/MS. The thickness of the diffusion layer increased with post heat treatment temperature and the diffusion layer was verified as having $({\epsilon}+{\zeta})+({\zeta}+{\beta}-Ti)$ intermetallic compounds at $700^{\circ}C$ and an $({\zeta}+{\beta}-Ti)$ intermetallic compound at $800^{\circ}C$, respectively. The micro Knoop hardness of mild steel decreased with post heat treatment temperature; however, those of Ti decreased at a range of $500{\sim}600^{\circ}C$ and showed a uniform value until $800^{\circ}C$ and then increased rapidly up to $900^{\circ}C$. The micro Knoop hardness value of the diffusion layer increased up to $700^{\circ}C$ and then saturated with post heat treatment. A T-type peel test was used to estimate the bonding forces of Ti/Mild steel interfaces. The bonding forces decreased up to $800^{\circ}C$ and then increased slightly with post heat treatment. The optimized temperature ranges for post heat treatment were $500{\sim}600^{\circ}C$ to obtain the proper formability for an additional plastic deformation process.

Effect of vacuum annealing and characterization of diecast ADC12 aluminum alloys (다이캐스팅 공정으로 제조한 ADC12 알루미늄 합금의 물성 향상 및 진공 열처리 효과)

  • We report structural, mechanical, and thermal properties of diecast ADC12 aluminum alloys characterized using synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis, thermal conductivity (λ), Vickers hardness (Hv), and stress-strain measurements. We also studied the effect of post-annealing performed in a vacuum atmosphere on the mechanical properties of diecast ADC12 alloys. EDX and XRD results revealed that Al2Cu and AlCu3 grains are formed, well dispersed in Al base and highly crystalline. Ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of 307.9 ± 9.1 MPa and elongation of 2.98 ± 0.62 % were estimated. λ was 129.3 ± 0.27 W/m·K and Hv was approximately 130. Both values were significantly higher than the reported values. At annealing temperatures ranging from 25 to 200℃, UTS and Hv values remained constant, while as the annealing temperature increased to 500℃, these values gradually decreased. This is because stabilization of the microstructure improves toughness and ductility.

A Study on the Materials Characteristics of SM570TMC Plates (SM570TMC 강재의 재료특성에 관한 연구)

  • There is increasing need for high-strength steel especially for the high-rise steel building structure. High- strength steels, however, may have mechanical properties that are significantly different from those of the conventional steels.The application of high-strength steels to building structures should be reviewed as to whether inelastic behavior equivalent to that of conventional steels can be attained or not. In this study, SM570TMC steel, which was developed recently in Korea, was tested to evaluate mechanical properties and welding characteristics for use as a structural steel. Yield phenomenon of SM570TMC steel, which is continuous yielding, is quite different from that of conventional steel. The distributions of yield strength of SM570TMC steel were uniform regardless of thickness, while the minimum yield strength was 440MPa. Also, the flat distributions of hardness in z-direction were found to comprise one of the important properties. Results of the charpy impact tests at -5oC revealed toughness values of SM570TMC steel, which were higher than those of equivalent as rolled steel. Carbon equivalent(Ceq) values of SM570TMC steel, which were related to welding performance, were lower than those of equivalent as rolled steel.

Correlation of the Microstructural Degradation and Mechanical Properties of IN 738LC (IN 738LC 합금의 미세조직 열화와 물성의 상관성 연구)

  • IN 738LC, the major material for gas-turbine for power generation, was heat treated at $750^{\circ}C$, $850^{\circ}C$, $950^{\circ}C$ for 1000, 2000, and 4000 hrs and the microstructural evolution and mechanical properties were examined using optical microscope, XRD, SEM/EDS. The results showed ${\gamma}$', the main strengthening elements in this alloy, was about 300 nm in size and was about 56% by area fraction in as-cast samples. The area fraction of ${\gamma}$' peaked at 2000 hours at $750^{\circ}C$. The average diameter of the ${\gamma}$' which was about 300 nm at ascast specimen increased to about 1 $\mu\textrm{m}$ after heat treatment at $950^{\circ}C$ for 4000 hrs. Carbides were formed at dendrite, cell or grain boundaries which was ascribed to the segregation caused by solute redistribution during solidification. It was found that MC type carbides formed at low temperature, whereas carbides of $M_{23}$ /$C_{ 6}$/ type formed at higher temperature or at longer degradation. The hardness and impact energy decreased as the heat treatment temperature or time of retention increased, which was inaccrodance with the area fraction of ${\gamma}$'.

Properties and Fabrication of Nanostructured 2/3 Cr-ZrO2 Composite for Artificial Joint by Rapid Sinerting (급속 소결에 의한 인공관절용 나노구조 2/3 Cr-ZrO2 복합재료 제조 및 특성)

  • Despite having many attractive properties, $ZrO_2$ ceramic has a low fracture toughness which limits its wide application. One of the most obvious tactics to improve its mechanical properties has been to add a reinforcing agent to formulate a nanostructured composite material. Nanopowders of $ZrO_2$ and Cr were synthesized from $CrO_3$ and Zr powder by high energy ball milling for 10 h. Dense nanocrystalline $2/3Cr-ZrO_2$ composite was consolidated by a high-frequency induction heated sintering method within 5 min at $600^{\circ}C$ from mechanically synthesized powder. The method was found to enable not only rapid densification but also the inhibition of grain growth, preserving the nano-scale microstructure. Highly dense $2/3Cr-ZrO_2$ composite with relative density of up to 99.5% was produced under simultaneous application of a 1 GPa pressure and the induced current. The hardness and fracture toughness of the composite were 534 kg/mm2 and $7MPa{\cdot}m1/2$, respectively. The composite was determined to have good biocompatibility.

  • Characteristics of dissimilar metal welds between alloy steel ASTM A387 Gr. 91 and carbon steel ASTM A516 Gr.70 made with Flux cored arc welding(FCAW) have been evaluated in terms of microstructure, mechanical strength, chemical analysis by EDS as well as corrosion test. Three heat inputs of 15.0, 22.5, 30.0kJ/cm were employed to make joints of dissimilar metals with E91T1-B9C wire. Post-weld heat treatment was carried out at $750^{\circ}C$ for 2.5 h. Based on microstructural examination, tempered martensite and lower bainite were formed in first layer of weld metal. The amount of tempered martensite was decreased and the amount of lower bainite was increased with increasing heat input and layer. Heat affected zone of alloy steel showed the highest hardness due to the formation of tempered Martensite and lower Bainite. Tensile strengths of dissimilar welds decreased with increasing heat inputs. Dissimilar welds seemed to have a good hot cracking resistance due to the low HCS index below 4. The salt spray test of dissimilar metals showed that the corrosion rate increased with increasing heat inputs due to the increase of the amount of lower Bainite.

An Evaluation of Skiving Cutting Characteristics of TiCN PACVD Coating Caribide Hob (TiCN PACVD코팅 초경호브의 Skiving절삭특성 평가)

  • SCM420 steel tempered after performing gear hove PACVD carbide coating on the surface after the cutting surface hardness was high. Difficult-to-cut, without coating is classified as mild as large, including materials like mild, high strength that improves tool life and productivity have limited availability. Drive to improve it in the TiCN-coated carbide call for war to the finish coating on cutting a hob skiving good workability, tool wear less, 2.5-fold increase in tool life results were obtained. Experiments using CNC Skiving hobbing machine with wet cutting conditions, cutting speed and feed rate to apply a variety of the tool wear and surface roughness data were obtained. Results from condition 2 (V = 200m/min F = 0.7mm/rev) cutting speed feed mark the cutting surface microstructure and surface roughness Rmax $4.7{\mu}m$(Ra $1.19{\mu}m$) of the data was obtained.
