  • We fabricated the YBCO films on single crystal $LaAlO_3$ substrates via a metal organic deposition (MOD) process. In the process, $Y_2Ba_1Cu_1O_x$ and $Ba_3Cu_5O_8$ powders were dissolved in trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) followed by calcining and firing heat treatments. To evaluate the effects of the firing temperature on YBCO phase formation and critical properties, the films were fired at $750^{\circ}C,\;775^{\circ}C\;and\;800^{\circ}C$ after calcining at $430^{\cric}C$. Microstructure observation indicated that a crack-free surface formed and a strong biaxial texture was developed. The FWHM of out-of-plane texture was measured to be in the range of $4.3^{\cric}-7.0^{\circ}$ for all the films. When the YBCO film was fired at $775^{\cric}C$, it had the highest critical properties: 88.5 K of critical temperature and 16 A/cm-width of critical current ($1MA/cm^2$ as critical current density). On the other hand, those properties were degraded as firing at $750^{\circ}C\;and\;800^{\circ}C$. It is considered that the improved critical values are partly owing to dense and homogeneous microstructure, strong texture, and high oxygen content.

  • In order to investigate the effect of Ge addition to the Cu Matrix on the microstructure and the critical current density, four kinds of internal tin processed Nb$_3$Sn strands with pure Cu and Cu 0.2, 0.4, 0.6 wt% Ge alloy were drawn to 0.8 mm diameter. The microstructure and critical current of internal tin processed Nb$_3$Sn wires that were heat treated at temperatures ranging from 68$0^{\circ}C$ to 74$0^{\circ}C$ for 240 h were investigated. The Ge addition to the matrix did not make workability worse. A Ge rich layer in the Cu-Ge matrix suppressed the growth of the Nb$_3$Sn layer and promoted grain coarsening. The greater the Ge content in the matrix, the lower the net Jc result after Nb$_3$Sn reaction heat treatment. There was no significant variation in Jc observed with heat treatment temperature ranging from 68$0^{\circ}C$ to 74$0^{\circ}C$.

  • We have systematically studied the superconducting properties and flux pinning enhancement of $(Y_{0.33}Sm_{0.33}Nd_{0.33})\;Ba_2Cu_3O_y$ [(YSN)-123] composite oxides by melt growth process in air. A sample prepared by this method showed well-textured microstructure, and $(Y_{0.33}Sm_{0.33}Nd_{0.33})\;BaCuO_5$ [(YSN)211] nonsuperconducting particles were uniformly dispersed in large (YSN) 123 superconducting matrix. The sample showed a sharp superconducting transition at 91 K. The magnetization measurements of the (YSN)-123 sample exhibited the enhanced flux pinning, compared with $YBa_2Cu_3O_y$ (Y-123) sample without Sm and Nd. Critical current densities of (YSN)-123 sample was $2.5{\times}10^4 A/cm^2$ at 2 T and 77 K.

  • $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-x}$ oxide superconductors were fabricated by the hot isostatic pressing (HIP). It was shown that their structures were orthorombic and constited of a single (123) phase. While as-sintered compacts had many pores, they were remarkably reduced by Hiping. The on-set and off set temperature of (123) compound sintered at $950^{\circ}C$ in oxygen and hiping at $880^{\circ}C$ were the highest and it showed 0 resistance at $90^{\circ}K$. The critical current density ($J_c$) of the above superconductor was $27A/cm^2$ and it also showed a number of twin structures, which are typical of high $T_c$ superconductor. It seemed that the low current density may be due to the many pores of starting-sintered compacts.

  • With an aim of comparison, single grain Y-Ba-Cu-O (YBCO) bulk superconductors were fabricated using a liquid infiltration growth (LIG) process and a conventional melt growth (MTG) process with top seeding. The MTG process uses an $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-x}$(Y123) powder as a precursor, while the LIG process uses $Y_2BaCuO_5(Y211)/Ba_3Cu_5O_8(Y035)$ pre-forms. The growth of a single Y123 domain on the top seed was successful in the both processes. Different feature between the two processes is the interior microstructure regarding the critical current density ($J_c$). The LIG-processed YBCO sample showed a lower porosity, more uniform distribution of Y211 particles and the enhanced Y211 refinement compared to the conventional MTG process. The $J_c$ improvement in the LIG process is attributed to the dispersion of finer Y211 particles as well as lower porosity within the Y123 superconducting matrix.

  • A diffusion heat treatment process for YBa2Cu3O7-y bulk superconductor in a Gd2O3 powder was attempted. As a result of measuring the critical temperature of the superconducting bulk, there was no change in the superconducting transition temperature as the Gd particles diffused into the YBa2Cu3O7-y lattice, resulting in dense microstructure. As a result of measuring the critical current, the critical current density (Jc) of the superconducting bulk having treated by the Gd thermal diffusion treatment at 0 T increased to 3×104 A/cm2 at 0 T, which was higher than that of the superconducting bulk without thermal diffusion treatment. The surface magnetic force of the superconducting bulk with Gd thermal diffusion treatment was observed at the center of the superconducting bulk with the maximum trapped magnetic force (Hmax) of 1.51 kG. This result means that the Gd thermal diffusion treatment contributes to improving the critical current density Jc of YBa2Cu3O7-y, and it is believed that Gd particles migrating into the superconducting bulk through thermal diffusion either fill the surface pores of YBa2Cu3O7-y superconductors or act as a flux pinning center.

  • Effects of powder sintering and 2nd, pressing on the superconducting characteristics in the (Bi,Pb)SrCaCuO system have been studied. The sample prepared by the powder sintering process had a porous microstructure with a $T_c$ below 77 K, while the sample prepared by 2nd. pressing process had highly oriented microstructure with a $T_c$ above 100 K. The critical current density($J_c$) was relatively improved in the sample prepared by the 2nd. pressing process. But the value of $J_c$ is cosiderably low in practical use.

  • Melt spun YbBa2Cu3Agx(x=0, 5, 12, 16 and 53) precursor alloy ribbons were oxidized at 263-330$^{\circ}C$ and treated at 820$^{\circ}C$, 855$^{\circ}C$ and 885$^{\circ}C$ under 1.0 atm oxygen pressure. In the ribbons treated at 820$^{\circ}C$, 855$^{\circ}C$and 885$^{\circ}C$ 1-2-4 phase (YbBa2Cu4O8) and 1-2-3 phase (YbBa2Cu3O{{{{ OMICRON _7-$\delta$ }})were formed respectively. The shape of 1-2-4 phase was distorted or ellipsoid. The 2-4-7 and 1-2-3 phases tooked the shape of bar. All the ribbons showed zero critical current density Jc at 77K in zero magnetic field. By considering the shape and the highest critical temperature (among the three phases) of the 1-2-3 phase we tried to increase the critical current density of the ribbons treated at 885$^{\circ}C$ by press deformation. About tenribbons were stacked and coupled by press deformation and then treated at 885$^{\circ}C$ These 1-2-3 phase did not show any texture in any of the ribbons. However they exhibited weak texture in the multilayered specimens. Among the multilayered specimens YbBa2Cu3Ag16 exhibited a Jc of 180 A/cm2 Among the above ribbons YbBa2Cu3Ag16 ribbon has the optimum composition to produce textured superconducting oxide with improved Jc by press deformation. Onset critical temperatures Ton of the multilayered YbBa2Cu3Agx(x=5, 12, 16 and 53) were measured as 88-90 K.

  • Temperature dependence of magnetic moment (m-T) and the magnetization (M-H) at 5 K and 20 K of the in situ processed $MgB_2$ bulk pellets with/without carbon (C) doping were examined. The superconducting critical temperature ($T_c$), the superconducting transition width (${\delta}T$) and the critical current density ($J_c$) were estimated for ten test samples taken from the $MgB_2$ bulk pellets. The reliable m-T characteristics associated with the uniform $MgB_2$ formation were obtained for both $MgB_2$ pellets. The $T_cs$ and ${\delta}Ts$ of all test samples of the undoped $MgB_2$ were the same each other as 37.5 K and 1.5 K, respectively. The $T_cs$ and ${\delta}Ts$ of the C-doped $MgB_2$ were 36.5 K and 2.5 K, respectively. Unlike the m-T characteristics, there existed the difference among the M-H curves of the test samples, which might be caused by the microstructure variation. In spite of the slight $T_c$ decrease, the C doping was effective in enhancing the $J_c$ at 5 K.
