  • In order to detection of the intestinal parasites, fecal samples were taken from broiler (n=290), parent stock (n=168) and laying hen (n=114) in Jeonbuk province. The prevalence and identification of intestinal parasites were determined by the fecal examination using the floatation method and microscopical examination, respectively. The detection rate of parasite-eggs from 3 flocks (total=572) was 44.9%. In the breed and type of breeding, infection rate of parasite-eggs was detected 65.5% as broiler (floor breeding, 290 chickens), 20.2% as parent stock (floor breeding, 168 chickens) and 28.9% as laying hen (cage breeding, 114 chickens), in order. In the concern of mixed infection such as single and double, the rate were 40.7% and 4.2%, respectively. Six kinds of infective eggs were isolated 257 fecal sample from 3 flock. They were classified 74.7% as Eimeria spp, 18.1% as Ascaridia galli and 6.0% as Capillaria spp and 0.4% as Heteratkis gallinarum, Railleina spp or Trichostrongylus spp, single or in combination.

  • A case of enteric pythiosis in the jejunum is reported in a 28-month-old, male Jindo dog. Grossly, a 20cm segment of the cranial jejunal wall was markedly thickened to a thickness of 10cm and the lumen was narrowed. Histological examination of the jejunum reveals transmurally affected multifocal to coalescing granulomatous inflammation. The granulomatous foci were composed of a necrotic center with neutrophilic infiltration and occasionally non-parallel, branching, septate hyphae surrounded by numerous epithelioid macrophages, multinucleated giant cells, lymphocytes and fibrosis. Multinucleated giant cells occasionally contain fragment of hyphae. The diagnosis was based on light microscopical studies and positive PAS and immunostaining for Pythium insidiosum. This is believed to be the first reported case of canine enteric pythiosis in Korea.

  • Four kinds of Bupleuri Radix, namely 'Dang shiho', 'Won shiho', 'Shik shiho' and 'Jook shiho', are currently used in the market of Korea. It is thought that 'Dang shiho' is the root of Bupleurum falcatum and B. scorzoneraefolium. It was also reported that 'Won shiho' and 'Shik shiho' are the root of B. falcatum. Since 'Jook shiho' which is widely used in the market and even exported, has not been clarified as to the origin of the plant and the chemical components, the author obtained some results by this study, the summaries of which are as following: 1. The results of microscopical examination of 'Jook shiho' and 'Kae shiho' were entirely identical and the TLC patterns were coincided as well. It was therefore definitely clarified that the origin of 'Jook shiho' is Bupleurum longe-radiatum. 2. The TLC patterns of 'Won shiho', 'Jook shiho' and 'Kae shiho' which are belonging to the same family and the same genus, appeared identical, and reveal the similarity of the chemical constituents and thereby strongly support the fact that 'Jook shiho' can be used for the same purpose as 'Won shiho'.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the pulpal response against calcium hydroxide and zinc oxide containing various concentration of formocresol (0.1, 0.5, 1, 5, 10, 20 and 30%). The experiment was performed on dog's teeth (75 teeth from 5 dogs: Table 1.) and the teeth were routinly treated in laboratory procedures. Followings are the results obtained through microscopical examination. 1. In zinc oxide group, intlammatory reaction was severe in low concentrated formocresol and the (higher the concentration of formocresol the milder the inflammatory reaction was more evident. 2. In zinc oxide group, inflammatory change was milder at 3 weeks than 1 week, and proliferation of young connective tissue was seen at 3 weeks. 3. In calcium hydroxide group, inflammatory change in relation to the concentration of formocresol was not noticeable. 4. In calcium hydroxide group, repair process with decreased inflammatory reaction and fibrosis, and dentin bridge like layer was found at 3 weeks.

  • We present the cytologic features of a case of solid and papillary neoplasm of the pancreas. Cytologically, the tumor was composed of a monotonous population of polygonal cells containing eccentrically located round nuclei with one or two distinct small nucleoli and a finely stippled chromatin pattern. The tumor cells were similar to those of the islet cell tumor and showed isolated loosely aggregated and solid sheets or large cell clumps. The large cell clumps revealed a branching papillary structure containing fibrovascular central core, which is characteristic histologic feature of solid and papillary neoplasm of the pancreas. This case was confirmed by tissue examination including histochemical, immunohistochemical and electron microscopical studies. Ultrastructurally, the tumor cells contained a few membrane- bound electron dense granules.

  • 1. Three hundred and thirty three strains of thermoduric bacteria from raw milk, H.T.S.T. sterilized milk and U.H.T. sterilized milk in the market were isolated after heat treatment at $65^{\circ}C$ for 30 minutes. 2. By microscopical and physiological examination, including the tests for proteolysis and lipolysis, the isolates were identified as 125 strains of Bacillus stearothermophilus, 69 strains as Bacillus coagulans, 57 strains as Bacillus subtilis, 76 strains as Bacillus cereus and 3 strains as Lactobacillus thermophilus. 3. The susceptibility of the selected thermoduric strains to heat, the vegetative cells of some strains in skim milk survived the heat treatment at $65^{\circ}C$ for 30 minutes or $85^{\circ}C$ for 20 minutes but not survived at $100^{\circ}C$ for 10 minutes.

  • In order to detection of the Intestinal parasites, 503 fecal samples were taken from mongorel-and pad-dogs in Chonbuk province. The prevalence and identification of intestinal parasites were determined by the fecal examinations using the floatation and /or sedimentation methods and microscopical examination, respectively. The results were obtained as follows 1. Fifty-nine percent (297 dogs) from 503 fecal samples were detected eggs. In seasonal detection rate of eggs, Summer was 30.3%, Autumn 26.4%, Winter 22.3% and Spring 21.0%, in order, 2. A total of 20 kinds of eggs were isolated from feces, and it was identified 75.7% as Nematoda(320 dogs), 5.6% as Cestoda(24 dogs) and 1.4% as Trematoda(6 dogs), and 17.2% as Protozoa(73 dogs). The isolates were identified as Ancylostoma caninum (30.4%, 153 dogs), Isospora spp. (14.3%, 72 dogs), Toxocara canis(11.1%, 56 dogs), Toxascaris leonina(5.8%, 29 dogs) , Uncineria stenocephala or Physaloptera spp. (5.4%, 27 dogs), Trichuris vulpis(2.4%, 12 dogs) and the others, single or in combination. 3. In mixed infection such as single, double, triple and quadraple was 63.6%, 31.7%, 3.4% and 1.3%, respectively.
