Microstructure based FE simulations were conducted to investigate the micro-mechanical properties of ferrite-martensite dual-phase steels. The FE model was built based on real microstructure images which were characterized by optical microscopy through the thickness direction. Serial sectioned 2D images were converted into semi-2D representative volume elements (RVEs) model. Each RVE model was subjected to a non-proportional loading condition and the mechanical response was analyzed on both the macroscopic and microscopic levels. Macroscopically, stress-strain curves were described under tension-compression and tension-orthogonal tension conditions and the Bauschinger effect was well captured for both loading paths. In addition, micromechanical properties were investigated in the view of stress-strain partitioning and strain localization during monotonic tension.
For the purpose of preciously describing real time traffic pattern in urban road network, dynamic network loading(DNL) models able to simulate traffic behavior are required. A number of different methods are available, including macroscopic, microscopic dynamic network models, as well as analytical model. Equivalency minimization problem and Variation inequality problem are the analytical models, which include explicit mathematical travel cost function for describing traffic behaviors on the network. While microscopic simulation models move vehicles according to behavioral car-following and cell-transmission. However, DNL models embedding such travel time function have some limitations ; analytical model has lacking of describing traffic characteristics such as relations between flow and speed, between speed and density Microscopic simulation models are the most detailed and realistic, but they are difficult to calibrate and may not be the most practical tools for large-scale networks. To cope with such problems, this paper develops a new DNL model appropriate for dynamic traffic assignment(DTA), The model is combined with vertical queue model representing vehicles as vertical queues at the end of links. In order to compare and to assess the model, we use a contrived example network. From the numerical results, we found that the DNL model presented in the paper were able to describe traffic characteristics with reasonable amount of computing time. The model also showed good relationship between travel time and traffic flow and expressed the feature of backward turn at near capacity.
Traffic engineers have developed and implemented various microscopic simulation models to verify the traffic performance and to prevent the expected problems. The existing microscopic simulation models categorize drivers into several types to reflect various drivers' driving patterns but miss the dynamics of drivers' behavior changed based upon the traffic conditions. It was found from the field data collected from two different merging sections on an urban freeway in Seoul, Korea, that the drivers' critical gap distributions are changed based on (1) the traffic density on the adjacent lane to the acceleration lane and (2) the opportunities left to merge in terms of distance to the end of acceleration lane. It was also found from the study that the drivers' critical gap distributions follow the Normal distribution. and its mean and variance change while a vehicle progresses on an acceleration lane. This paper proposes a new gap-acceptance model developed based on a set of drivers' critical gap distributions from each segment on the acceleration lanes. Through the comparison study between the field data and the results from the simulation utilizing the proposed model, it was verified that (1) the distribution of merging points on an acceleration lane to the adjacent main lane at different density levels, (2) the size of the gap accepted for merging and (3) the speed difference between the merging vehicle and the trailing vehicle at the time of merging are statistically identical to the field data at 95% confidence level.

PURPOSES : This study evaluated the feasibility of implementing protected-permissive left-turn (PPLT) signals at three-leg signalized intersections. METHODS: A three-leg signalized intersection with permissive left-turn was first selected. A VISSIM simulation model was constructed using data collected from the test site. The VISSIM network was calibrated by adjusting related parameter values in order to minimize the difference between the simulated and surveyed critical gap. The calibrated network was validated by the number of waiting left-turning vehicles per cycle. Finally, the mobility and safety measures were extracted from simulation runs in which permissive, protected left turns as well as PPLTs were realized based on diverse traffic volume scenarios. RESULTS : The mobility-related measures of effectiveness (MOEs) of the case with PPLT outperformed the other two left-turn treatment scenarios. In particular, the average waiting time per cycle for the left-turn vehicles in the case with PPLT was reduced by 30 s. The safety-related MOEs of the case with PPLT were somewhat higher than those in the case with protected left-turns and much higher than those in the case with permissive left-turns. CONCLUSIONS : Based on the mobility- and safety-related MOEs generated from the VISSIM simulation runs, the use of PPLT seems to be feasible at three-leg signalized intersections where the left-turn is permissive and a pedestrian signal exists at the conflicting approach. However, in order to use the PPLT in earnest, it is necessary to revise the road traffic act, traffic signs, and related manuals.
After the integrated fare system has been applied, public transportation and transfer traffic increased. As a result, transfer passengers must be considered in the operation of the bus. Although previous studies have limitations due to utilizing deterministic mathematical models, which fails to reflect the stochastic movements of passengers and buses, in this study, a more realistic bus stop micro-simulation model is proposed. Based on the proposed simulation model, we represent the relationship between bus arrival interval and passenger wait time as a regression model and empirically show the differences between the cases with and without transfer passengers. Also, we propose a method converting passenger waiting time to cost and find optimal bus arrival interval based on the converted cost. It is expected the proposed method enables bottom-up decision making reflecting practical situation.

Thanks to technical improvement on the vehicle to vehicle communication and the intelligent transportation system, gradual introduction of the autonomous vehicles is expected soon in the market. The study analyzes the autonomous vehicles' impacts on the network efficiencies. In order to measure the network efficiencies, the study applies the sequential procedures that combines the microscopic and macroscopic simulations. The microscopic simulation attends to the capacity changes due to the autonomous vehicles' proportions on the roadway while the macroscopic simulation utilizes the simulation results in order to identify the network-wide improvement. As expected, the autonomous vehicles efficiently utilizes the existing capacity of the roadway than the human driving does. Particularly, the maximum capacity improvements are expected by the 190.5% on the expressway. The significant capacity change is observed when the autonomous vehicles' proportions are about 80% or more. These improvements are translated into the macroscopic model, which also yields overall network efficiency improvement by the autonomous vehicles' penetration. However, the study identifies that the market debut of the autonomous vehicles does not promise the free flow condition, which implies the possible needs of the system optimal routing scheme for the era of the autonomous vehicles.

Microscopic freeway simulation models project the uncertain values of performance measures for subject traffic conditions by explaining drivers' driving behavior with lane changing and car-following models. However, the existing lane changing models are limited to gap acceptance oriented passive behavior of drivers and not able to capture more-or-less aggressive driving behavior(e.g. cut-in lane changing) ordinarily obseved in field. This paper suggests the definition of cut-inlane changing and presents its characteristics based on the findings from two different freeway on- and off-ramp sections. In addition, this paper proposes a new lane changing model capable of handling both passive and active drivers' driving behavior for better performance of simulations. The proposed lane changing model was tested with Hanyang Simulatin (HYTSIM), a microscopic freeway simulation program developed for this study. The HYTSIM simulation results reflecting the performance of the proposed lane changing model were compared against the field data. The test results showed that the distribution of gaps collected when vehicles change lanes were statistically identical to the field data at 95% confidence level.

Elastic-plastic finite element(FE) simulation was performed for polycrystalline solids subjected to plane strain tensile loading. Using Asaro's double slip crystal plasticity model, the polycrystalline solids were modeled by assigning different initial slip directions to each grain. From the FE calculations, the microscopic deformation characteristics of polycrystalline solids were analyzed. Moreover, the effect of grain size and grain boundaries on the deformation characteristics were clarified.
The floor field model (hereafter referred to as FFM) is a cellular automata (hereafter referred to as CA)-based walk model used to model pedestrian behavior. Existing studies on FFM conducted experiments with simple structures (that have one room or one obstacle in a room) or relatively complicated structures (that have many rooms). In order to apply the FFM to real buildings, it is necessary to have additional methodologies to process information about the number of rooms, floors, stairs, and exit doors. In particular, it is necessary to process exit doors during this procedure. Exit doors that are recognized by pedestrians are of many types such as exit doors in rooms, stairs connected to corridors, and exit doors in a building. When calculating the static floor field (hereafter referred to as SFF) in the FFM, information about exit doors is needed and simulation results will be different depending on how the SFF is calculated using an exit door among the above-mentioned exit doors. In this study, an XML-format building data model is proposed according to data structures required by the FFM. This study also defines a methodology to process a number of exit doors. Accordingly, this study developed a building data construction and evacuation simulator and simulation experiments were conducted with university campus building.
The operational effect of traffic signal control improvement was evaluated using the Two-Fluid Model. The parameters engaged in the Two-Fluid Model becomes food indicators to measure the quality of traffic flow due to the improvement of traffic signal operation. A series of experiment were conduced for the 31 signalized intersections in Uijeongbu City. To estimate the parameters in the Two-Fluid Model the trajectory informations of individual vehicles were collected using the CORSIM and Run Time Extension. The test results showed 35 percent decrease of average minimum trip time per unit distance. One of the parameters in the Two-Fluid Model is a measure of the resistance of the network to the degraded operation with the increased demand. The test result showed 28 percent decrease of this parameter. In spite of the simulation results of the arterial flow, it was concluded that the Two-Fluid Model is useful tool to evaluate the improvement of the traffic signal control system from the macroscopic aspect.
