Antioxidant Effect of Fermented Salicornia herbacea L. Liquid with EM (Effective Microorganism) on Pork (돼지고기에 대한 EM(Effective Microorganism) 함초 발효액의 항산화 효과)

  • The study was conducted to determine the antioxidant activity of EM (Effective Microorganism) fermented glasswort liquid for utilizing as a functional food material. Glasswort leaves by freezing-dried were showed the highest 20.19% contents, it was 20% salt contents of cooked salts. To compare antioxidant effects of glasswort plant parts (dried ground leaves, stems, and roots of glasswort) were exploited for investigation of antioxidant activity. Antioxidant activity for the samples was investigated by TBA (Thiobarbituric acid reactive method). EM fermented glasswort liquid from coastal region, the highest antioxidative activity showed in the oven-dried leaves at 14 days after storage. It was showed antioxidant effect more than 5.3 times than control. In conclusion, antioxidative effect of glasswort was apparently exhibited through measurement of TBARS (Thiobarbituric acid reactive substances).

The use of beneficial microorganisms to improve turfgrass quality and usability (유용미생물의 시용이 잔디의 질과 이용성에 미치는 영향)

  • In use of pesticides in golf courses has been increased steadily. Environmental concern as well as decrease in efficiency led the turfgrass management into an alternate approach of using beneficial microorganism to deal with turfgrass pests. This study was focused on the use of such microorganisms for improving cultural environment and minimizing the use of pesticides. Microorganisms antagonistic to turfgrass diseases were applied to zoysiagrass fairways and creeping bentgrass greens in Yusung country club. Tharch accumulation, disease occurrence, and other cultural environments were compared among the combinations of microorganisms and suppliemental N applications. The application of microorganisms antagonistic to turfgrass diseases improved turf resiliency. Thatch thickness was 3.03cm in the control plot but it was 2.11cm in plots treated by microorganisms, indicating significant effects of microorganism application on reduction of thatch accumulation. Number of microorganism that can decompose of cellulose was higher at the plots treated with useful microbial products and it was considered that existence of higher population of microorganisms resulted in reduction of thatch accumulation. In the evaluation of relationship between thatch accumulation and disease occurrence, greater thatch accumulation was observed at the golf courses which have been frequently infested by large patch. However, the rate of thatch accumulation varied among surveyed golf courses regardless of the year of turf establishment. Therefore, management practice which can be effective for reduction of thatch could result in large patch suppression. The application of microorganisms on the established turfgrasses reduced the occurrence rate of pythium blight and yellow path diseases, whereas occurrence of brown patch and dollar spot increased.

  • Years of research have shown that the application of microorganisms increases the compressive strength of cement-based material when it is cured in a culture medium. Because the compressive strength is strongly affected by the hydration of cement paste, this research aimed to investigate the role of the microorganism Sporosarcina pasteurii in hydration of cement paste. The microorganism's role was investigated with and without the presence of a urea-CaCl2 culture medium (i.e., without curing the specimens in the culture medium). The results showed that S. pasteurii accelerated the early hydration of cement paste. The addition of the urea-CaCl2 culture medium also increased the speed of hydration. However, no clear evidence of microbially induced calcite precipitation appeared when the microorganisms were directly mixed with cement paste.

A report of seven unrecorded bacterial species in Korea, isolated from marine sediment

  • In March 2021, marine sediment from East Sea samples were suspended in a 2% NaCl solution, and serial dilution was performed in fresh marine and Reasoner's 2A agar. Isolated bacterial strains were identified based on 16S rRNA gene sequences, and showed at least 98.7% sequence similarity with previously reported bacterial species. Finally, seven bacterial strains which were validly published but not reported in Korea, were obtained. These isolates were allocated to the orders Bacillales and Flavobacteriales. The three Flavobacteriales strains are classified into the family Flavobacteriaceae. The other four Bacillales belong to the families Bacillaceae and Paenibacillaceae. The seven unrecorded bacterial strains in this study are classified into seven different genera, which are assigned to Mesobacillus, Paenibacillus, Gramella, Gillisia, Arenibacter, Fictibacillus, and Brevibacillus. During the investigation, the possibility of excavation of various unrecorded species in domestic marine sediment was confirmed. Gram-staining, cell morphology, physiological and basic biochemical characteristics, and phylogenetic analysis were performed in this study and provided in the description of each strain.

Shortening of Fermentation Period of Changran-Jeotgal Using Microorganism (미생물을 이용한 창란젓갈의 숙성기간 단축)

  • We Isolated strains of Micrococcus sp., Pseudomonas sp., Leuconostoc sp. which have protease activity in the Changran-Jeotgal. These microbes were added in the Changran-Jeotgal for the starters during fermentation to short fermentation period to check PH, VBN, $NH_2-N,$ free amino acids, and sensory evaluation. Microbiological changes were also examined for microorganism-added Changran-Jeotgal and the control. Viable cell counts in the microorganism-added Changran-Jeotgal increased from $7.1\times10^5\;CFU/g\;to\;7.5\times10^8\;CFU/g$ on 15th day, The cell counts in the control increased from $4.1\times10^5\;CFU/g\;to\;8.1\times10^8\;CFU/g$ on 30th day. VBN also increased in both. Increasing rates of $NH_2-N$ and free amino acids in the microorganism-added Changran-Jeotgal were faster than those in the control. Sensory evaluation showed that the microorganism-added Changran-Jeotgal was most favorable on 20th day. These results showed that fermentation period was shortened about 10 days in comparison with the control.

  • The impulse of this paper is to examine the influence of unsteady flow comprising of Eyring-Powell nanofluid over a stretched surface. This work aims to explore efficient transfer of heat in Eyring-Powell nanofluid with bio-convection. Nanofluids possess significant features that have aroused various investigators because of their utilization in industrial and nanotechnology. The influence of including motile microorganism is to stabilize the nanoparticle suspensions develop by the mixed influence of magnetic field and buoyancy force. This research paper reveals the detailed information about the linearly compressed Magnetohydrodynamics boundary layer flux of two dimensional Eyring-Powell nanofluid through disposed surface area due to the existence of microorganism with inclusion the influence of non- linear thermal radiation, energy activation and bio-convection. The liquid is likely to allow conduction and thickness of the liquid is supposed to show variation exponentially. By using appropriate similarity type transforms, the nonlinear PDE's are converted into dimensionless ODE's. The results of ODE's are finally concluded by employing (HAM) Homotopy Analysis approach. The influence of relevant parameters on concentration, temperature, velocity and motile microorganism density are studied by the use of graphs and tables. We acquire skin friction, local Nusselt and motil microorganism number for various parameters.

Effects of Eco-Friendly Organic Fertilizer on Growth and Yield of Angelica gigas Nakai (친환경 유기질 비료 시용이 참당귀의 생육과 수량에 미치는 영향)

  • This experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of several organic compost on the growth and root yield of Angelica gigas Nakai with organic cultivation. After fertilizing the soil with organic fertilizer, the dry weight of liming fertilizer showed a slow change, while microorganism fertilizer decreased about 29% until 20 day after fertilizing. At 110 days after fertilizing, microorganism fertilizer decreased more than liming fertilizer. Liming fertilizer decomposed slowly, while microorganism fertilizer decomposed early on rapidly but gently after 20 days in decomposed rate of organic fertilizer. Dried root yields per 10a of A. gigas were not significance between 277.6kg in conventional fertilizer and 277.7kg, 280.5kg in N 1.5, N 2.0 times of microorganism fertilizer. Decursin and decursinol angelate contents in A. gigas were 9.08 ~ 9.07% from N 1.0 and N 1.5 times in liming fertilizer, and 7.94 ~ 8.12% from N 1.5 times and N 2.0 times in microorganism fertilizer, compared to 7.31% of conventional treatment.

Comparison of Antioxidant and Antimicrobial Activities of Supercritical Fluid Extracts and Marc Extracts from Cinnamomum verum (계피 초임계 추출물 및 박 추출물의 항균·항산화 활성 비교)

  • This study was performed to evaluate the antioxidant and antimicrobiological effects of supercritical fluid extracts (SFEs) and Marc methanol extracts (SFMs) from Cinnamomum verum. Reducing effects on 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical and ABTS radical scavenging were investigated. SFM exhibited higher antioxidant activities in DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging assay. Measurements of the antimicrobial activity were used for Gram-positive bacteria (four strains) and Gram-negative bacteria (four strains). The antimicrobial activities of the SFE and SFM against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria revealed that SFE had a higher inhibition zone than SFM. Cinnamaldehyde, the active compound of C. verum, had a higher content in SFM (35% at 300 bar, $30^{\circ}C$) than methanol extracts from C. verum (0.5%). These results indicate that not only SFE oil, but also SFM, could be a good source for the food industry.

The Microbiological Assessment and Identification of Food Utensils and Food Service Facilities in School (학교 급식설비 및 집기류의 미생물학적 위해요소 분석)

  • This study was conducted to evaluate microorganism contamination of food utensils and service facilities in school and to prevent hazards by food poisoning occurrence. As a result, the highest number of microorganism growth plate ($12.3{\pm}2.6$) was detected in total bacteria test plate, and also observed $10.3{\pm}3.9$ growth plates in Staphylococcus aureus test plate and $9.5{\pm}3.9$ growth plates in E. coli and coliform bacteria test plate. But we could detect to the lowest number of growth plates ($1.5{\pm}1.0$) in Vibrio test plate. We also assessed that floors were appeared to the highest microorganism contamination rate in food utensils and service facilities. Therefore, $4.5{\pm}0.6$ growth plates was detected in pre-operation floor and $4.3{\pm}1.0$ growth plates in floor. And high level of microorganism contamination also observed in tables as $3.3{\pm}1.0$ growth plates in cooking table and $3.0{\pm}0.0$ growth plates in dining table. The level of microorganism contamination of food utensils such as kitchen knife, cutting board, and food tray were lower than that in food service facilities. We analysed microorganism contamination according to purpose of use in kitchen knifes and cutting boards. The microorganism contamination rate in fish kitchen knife ($2.0{\pm}0.8$) and fish cutting board ($1.3{\pm}1.5$) were slightly higher than that of others purpose of use. As a result of microorganism identification, various strains of microorganism were contaminated in food service facilities and some strains could detected more than two times. Especially, Staphylococcus aureus was repeatedly identified in cooking table, trench, and kitchen knife. Bacillus cereus was identified in kitchen knife, and then Pseudomonas fluorescens and Pseudomonas aeruginosa were also detected in food utensils and service facilities as known to food spoilage microorganisms. Klebsiella pneumoniae was detected four times repeat, which widely distribute natural environment as normal bacterial flora but sometimes cause acute pneumonia. These results suggest that food utensils and service facilities are contaminated with not only major food poisoning microorganisms such as Staphylococcus aureus, but also food spoilage microorganisms. Taken together, strict personal hygiene control and efficient food service facilities management will be needed to enhance food safety in school feeding and to improve student health.

  • Ultraweak photons could be emitted from the chemical reaction without any electromagnetic radient. These chemiluminescence could be detected by highly sensible photomultiplier recently. We will introduce the principal of chemiluminescence generation reaction, and the application studies in the determination of food-borne microorganisms in field. The counts of surface contaminated microorganism in mackeral and chicken for cold storage determined by ATP-chemiluminescence method had good correlation with the counts by standard agar plate method. However, there was little correlation between 2 methods in ginseng powder whose microbial counts were lower than 10,000 CFU.
