  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of OH radicals on organic matter oxidation and suspended solids removal using microbubble as a pre-treatment technique to reduce the organic load of night soil in connection with sewage. The experiment was conducted for three months at HRT 4 hours using pressurized type microbubble generator. The mean SS removal efficiency was achieved 71%. The average removal efficiency of $TCOD_{Cr}$, TBOD, TN and TP were achieved for 51.5%, 47.9%, and 14.7% respectively, as scum and SS were removed by flotation separation. The removal efficiency of soluble organic matters were 25.0%, 17.1% for $SCOD_{Cr}$, SBOD by air microbubble supply. Soluble nitrogen and phosphorus were removed average of 11.9% and 7.4%, respectively. As s result, it was confirmed that soluble organic matters were removed by air microbubble supplied. Generated OH radicals when the microbubble was collapsed, can decompose the soluble organic matters. Therefore, The microbubble flotation process was installed at the front of night soil treatment process, it will contribute to the stable operation of the subsequent biological treatment facility by oxidation of the dissolved organic matters as well as removal of SS by flotation separation.

  • In this study, the microbubbles were applied to the MBR process for night soil treatment, and the removal efficiency was estimated. As a result of the this study, when the microbubble was supplied directly to the aerobic tank in which the membrane was submerged, excessive scum was generated so could not stable operation of the process. The SS removal efficiencies in the pre-treatment tank were 74.3%, 82.8%, 75.0%, 52.1% on average at the 2 kg, 4 kg, 6 kg, and $8kg\;COD_{Cr}/m^3$, respectively. The mean removal efficiencies were more than 99.4%, 94.0%, 74.1% for SS, $TCOD_{Cr}$, $SCOD_{Cr}$ by MBR process. On the other hand, when the microbubble are directly supplied to the aerobic tank, the microbubble and the scum are attached each other to accelerate the fouling. Therefore, it can be confirmed that stable treatment can be achieved by applying microbubble to the front of the bioreactor for removal of SS and oxidation of organic matters in high concentration organic wastewater treatment such as night soil.

  • In this study, experiment on phosphorus removal was performed by using microbubble liquid film flotation tank with microbubble module. After dissolving gas and liquid in dissolving tank, microbubble liquid film system created microbubbles in equal size under fixed low pressure. After being passed through $A_2O$ and m-$O_3$ process, secondary treatment wastewater was used as influent in phosphorus removal process. When the T-P concentration of influent was 2.89 mg/L, alum(8%, 30 mg/L) was injected into a microbubble flotation tank, the treatment resulted 94% of T-P removal rate. Remaining T-P concentration was less than 0.2 mg/L, which is in accord with the effluent quality standard. Seasonal variations in water temperature showed no differences in T-P removal property. When the inflow concentration of SS was 1.0 mg/L or more, it served as coagulation nuclei in the coagulation process. In that condition, average T-P removal rate was higher than 97%. When 50% of floated scum was returned, coagulator Al included in scum assisted the injected coagulator and maximized the coagulation efficiency of pollutant. In such treatment, the T-P concentration was measured as 0.18 mg/L and satisfied the outflow water quality standard, which is 0.2 mg/L or less.

  • This research was performed to review operating parameters, optimum condition and check characteristic of microbubble generation for using bubble size distribution according to venturi specification. Optimum operating condition have airflow rate 0.3 LPM, 3 bar(pressure tank) and connecting nozzle directly(without valve), it is advantageous to generate microbubble. In case of characteristic of microbubble generation according to venturi specification, effect that nozzle specification affects bubble size distribution is low impact. But considering performance aspects, when using nozzle that throat diameter 3-4 mm, $D_{50}$ are $54.98-61.19{\mu}m$(D3L15, D4L15), fraction of bubble less than $50{\mu}m$ are 0.326, 0.345. And it is superior to others. Besides, $D_{50}$ and fraction of bubble less than $50{\mu}m$ of throat length 20 mm are $49.40-54.98{\mu}m$, 0.447, respectively And nozzle that throat length 20 mm is relatively tendency to generate microbubble stably.

  • This study examined the DO concentration distribution and ORP distribution using microbubbles on pilot-scale aeration tanks. As a result of MLSS mixing and oxygen transfer phenomenon using microbubbles, different DO concentrations were observed depending on the circulation of the liquid with the microbubble supply location on the lateral of an aeration tank. The simulation results of CFD (computational fluid dynamics) program showed that MLSS mixed with a microbubble supply in the middle the reactor is much better than on the left side of the reactor. A single reactor containing an anaerobic, anoxic, and aerobic zone, was evaluated without partition according to the location of the microbubble supply based on the experiments and CFD analysis. MLSS was separated into solid-liquid by the microbubble supply in the aeration tank. Consequently, selecting the appropriate microbubble size is important for MLSS mixing and was maintained at the proper DO concentration for biological treatment.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the growth of lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) and Korean mint (Agastache rugosa Kuntze) with microbubble in a closed-type plant production system (CPPS) with a deep flow technique (DFT). Lettuce and Korean mint were grown in CPPS for 23 days. Microbubble was treated for 5 minutes daily at 9:00, 13:00, and 17:00 for 16 days. The leaf length, leaf width, leaf area, and fresh and dry weights of lettuce and Korean mint were significantly lower in microbubble than in the control. The total root length, root surface area, and the number of root tips of lettuce and Korean mint were significantly lower in the microbubble than in the control. In the case of average root diameter, there was no difference between the treatments of lettuce. However, Korean mint significantly increased in thickness in the microbubble treatment, indicating variations among the different crops. The results of the research indicated that microbubble treatment in the DFT inhibited plant growth by inducing abiotic stress in lettuce and Korean mint.

  • Rapid industrialization and a significant population growth has led to an increased use of chemicals, which has limited the biological processes that account for most of the existing water and wastewater treatment methods. Ozone microbubble technology, which is one of advanced oxidation processes, has recently attracted attention as a method to solve these issues. In this paper, we reviewed both the physical and the chemical characteristics of microbubbles, and evaluated microbubble-based ozone oxidation processes focusing on the removal of various toxic contaminants. In addition, we discussed the potential of an ozone microbubble process as water and wastewater treatment processes by combining it with other treatment technologies.

  • This paper reports the development of an oil flushing system combined with a microbubble generator. Oil flushing plays a crucial role in regulating the lubricant's performance during the lubricant replacement process. Moreover, harmful contaminants, such as sludge, wear particles, and rust, from piping systems or lubrication system can be removed by oil flushing. Oil flushing aims to increase the system's efficiency using a dedicated flushing oil, increasing of the supply pressure and generating a vortex. In addition, it helps the mechanical system or equipment achieve peak performance and reduces the potential for premature failure. However, the contaminant-removal applications of existing oil flushing system are limited. In this research, we aim to improve the performance of oil flushing system by incorporating a microbubble generator, which uses the venture effect to generate microbubbles and mixes them with lubricant. The microbubbles in the blended lubricant remove contaminants from the lubrication system more effectively. Structural mechanics and fluid dynamics are analyzed through fluid-structure interaction (FSI) analysis, and the numerical analysis results are used for the designing the system. The magnitude of the maximum stress is investigated based on the pressure results obtained by the CFD analysis; through the CFD analysis, the mixing ratio of air (bubble) and lubricant is evaluated using the volume of fluid (VOF) model according to the working conditions.

  • This study carried out zeta potential measurements of the Microcystis sp. under various solutions condition and investigated the characteristics of Microcystis sp. through the size control of microbubbles to eliminate algae that causes problems in aquatic ecosystems and human activities. DAF process was adopted and several coagulants were used to remove the Microcystis sp. CCD Camera was used to measure and analyze the size of microbubble, and fluorescent microscope was used to observe the particle, algae species and community. Zeta potential behavior of the algae was analyzed by using ELS-Z. Lab-scale and pilot-scale experiments were conducted to test flotation process. Polyaluminium chloride(PAC) coagulant was used, and the removal efficiency of the algae was assessed through Chlorophyll-a analysis. In the Lab-scale experiment, 2.2 ppm, 11 ppm, 22 ppm, and 44 ppm of polyaluminium chloride was injected to coagulate the algae. The coagulated algae was floated by the microbubble. The microbubbles in the experiments were generated at a air pressure of 450 ~ 550 kPa. The microbubble size was controlled in $36{\mu}m$, $100{\mu}m$, and $200{\mu}m$, respectively by using different diffuser. The results of lab-scale experiments on flotation plant indicated that the average removal rate was about 90% or above for 11 ppm, 22 ppm, and 44 ppm of polyaluminium chloride. On the other hand, in the pilot-scale experiment, the removal efficiency was in the range of 85% to 95% in all dose ranges of polyalumium chloride and aluminium sulfate coagulants.

  • An experimental study was performed on the collision nozzle system that generates microbubble by air self-suction using a venturi nozzle. This study experimentally investigates the pressure of a pump and a dissolution tank, water flow rate, air self-suction amount and microbubble generation amount. The experimental conditions were varied by changing the diameter of the collision nozzle (de=4,5,6,7,8mm), the pumping power(0.5hp, 1.0hp) and the capacity of the dissolution tank(4.4L, 8/8L). The pressure change of the pump according to the outlet diameter of the collision nozzle showed that the 1.0hp pump power operated more stably than the 0.5hp pump. The pressure change in the dissolution tank was shown to decrease rapidly as the outlet diameter of the nozzle increased. The flow rate of recirculating water was shown to increase as the nozzle diameter increased. Additionally, it was shown that the pump capacity of 1.0hp increased the flow rate more than that of 0.5hp. The self-suction air flow rate was shown to occur above de=6mm, and the air flow rate increased as the nozzle diameter increased. Also, as the pump capacity increased, the self-suction amount of air increased. It was shown that the amount of microbubble less than 50mm generated was maximum when the nozzle diameter was 6mm, the pump power was 1.0hp, and the dissolution tank capacity was 8.8L.
