In the electronic, medical, aerospace and automobile industries, many products and parts are manufactured by joining. Recently, as these get smaller, micro joining is becoming more and more important. In this study, micro wire-to-micro wire parallel joining was performed using single mode fiber laser. Maximum power of the fiber laser is 100 W. The CCD(Charge- Coupled Device, CCD) camera to observe the specimen was made up. The objective was applied to micro joining system to make a small spot size of laser beam. In order to control the target position, micro-multi-axis-stage was set up. This paper presents results for the single mode fiber laser joining of micro wires.

Miniaturization is the central theme in modern fabrication technology. Many of the components used in modem products are becoming smaller and smaller. The direct write FIB technology has several advantages over contemporary micromachining technology, including better feature resolution with low lateral scattering and capability of mastless fabrication. Therefore, the application of focused ion beam(FIB) technology in micro fabrication has become increasingly popular. In recent model of FIB, however the feeding system has been a very coarse resolution of about a few ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. It is not unsuitable to the sputtering and the deposition to make the high-precision structure in micro or macro scale. Our research is the development of nano stage of 200mm strokes and l0nm resolutions. Also, this stage should be effectively operating in ultra high vacuum of about 1$\times$10$^{-5}$ pa. This paper presents the concept of nano stages and the discussion of the material treatment for ultra tush vacuum.

This paper addresses the development of a laser interferometer to measure micro displacement for a micro system. The laser interferometer is able to measure micro displacement during a few micro seconds with non-contact. In order to employ the interferometer, the displacement calibration experiment should be required. For the experiment, a laser probe installed on the optical table with optical devices and a micro stage. The velocity decoding board is also added to calculate doppler shift frequency directly. The output signal is processed by LabView. Finally experiments are found out the relation between displacement and output signal.

Micro-drill wear deteriorates accuracy and productivity of the micro components. In order to improve productivity and qualify of micro components, it is required to investigate micro-drill wear exactly. In this study, a machine vision system is proposed to measure the wear of micro-drills using a precision servo stage. Calibration experiments are conducted to compensate for the machine vision system. In this paper, worn volume, area and length are defined as wear amounts. Micro-drill wear is reconstructed as the 3D topography and the quantized wear amount by using the shape from focus (SFF) method and wear parameters. Experiments have been conducted with HSS twist micro-drills and SM45C carbon steel workpieces. Validity of the proposed machine vision system is confirmed through experiments.
In the high precision robot systems, the most popular tasks may be handling of micro-scale objects on a surface such as a micromanipulation robot system. In handling of micro-scale objects, the stiction effect becomes a fundamental issue since the micro-contact mechanics dominates the micromanipulation robot system. In the paper, a theoretical non-stick condition derived from the micro-contact mechanics is carried out for the propose of micro-scale object manipulation. To verify the non-stick condition, a micro-manipulation robot system equipped with a high precision stage system and a microscope system is developed. Experimental results show that the proposed non-stick condition guarantees successful micro-scale object manipulation.

Experimental investigation has been conducted to study the effect of using Micro/Nano Silica in presence of steel fibers on improving the static response of reinforced concrete beams. Twenty-one mixtures were prepared with micro silica (MS), Nano silica (NS) and steel fibers (SFs) at different percentages. Cement was replaced by 10% and 15% of Micro silica and 1%, 2% and 3% of Nano silica in the presence of steel fibers at different volume fractions 0%, 1%, and 2%. 258 concrete samples, (126 cubes, 63 cylinders, 63 prisms, and six R.C beams), were investigated experimentally in two stages. The first stage was to investigate the mechanical properties of the prepared mixtures. The second stage was to study the static behavior of R.C beams, using the designed concrete mixtures, under a four-point flexural test. The results showed that replacing cement by (10% MS and 1% NS) produces the optimum mix with a significant improvement in the mechanical properties and the response of R.C beams under static loads. In addition, incorporating steel fibers at different volume fractions have a considerable effect on the flexural toughness of concrete mixes.

An electromagnetic micro x-y stage for probe-based data storage (PDS) has been fabricated. The x-y stage consists of a silicon body inside which planar copper coils are embedded, a glass substrate bonded to the silicon body, and eight permanent magnets. The dimensions of flexures and copper coils were determined to yield $100{\;}\mu\textrm{m}$ in x and y directions under 50 mA of supplied current and to have 440 Hz of natural frequency. For the application to PDS devices, electromagnetic stage should have flat top surface for the prevention of its interference with multi-probe array, and have coils with low resistance for low power consumption. In order to satisfy these design criteria, conducting planar copper coils have been electroplated within silicon trenches which have high aspect ratio ($5{\;}\mu\textrm{m}$in width and $30{\;}\mu\textrm{m}$in depth). Silicon flexures with a height of $250{\;}\mu\textrm{m}$ were fabricated by using inductively coupled plasma reactive ion etching (ICP-RIE). The characteristics of a fabricated electromagnetic stage were measured by using laser doppler vibrometer (LDV) and dynamic signal analyzer (DSA). The DC gain was $0.16{\;}\mu\textrm{m}/mA$ and the maximum displacement was $42{\;}\mu\textrm{m}$ at a current of 180 mA. The measured natural frequency of the lowest mode was 325 Hz. Compared with the designed values, the lower natural frequency and DC gain of the fabricated device are due to the reverse-tapered ICP-RIE process and the incomplete assembly of the upper-sided permanent magnets for LDV measurements.

Objective: In this study, tumor-stage predictive abilities of miR21, miR155, miR29a and miR92a were evaluated in rectal cancer (RC). Methods: Expression of miR21, miR155, miR29a and miR92a was detected and quantitated in tumor tissue and in adjacent normal tissue from 40 patients by TaqMan MicroRNA assay. Results: Significant overexpression of miR21, miR155, miR29a and miR92a was observed in RC tissues. While high expression of miR21, miR155 and miR29a in N1-2 and C-D stages presented a potential correlation with N and Duke stages, partial correlation analysis suggested that only miR155 rather than miR21 and miR29a played a greater influencing role. Receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curve analysis showed that miR155 could discriminate N0 from N1-2 with 85.0% sensitivity and 85.0% specificity, N2 from N0-1 with 90.0% sensitivity and 96.7% specificity, and C-D stage from A-B stage with 81.0% sensitivity and 84.2% specificity. Conclusions: Increase in expression of miR155 might represent a novel predictor for RC N and Dukes staging.

Micro plasma thruster (${\mu}PT$) was studied experimentally with a dual-stage micro-hollow cathode discharge (MHCD) plasma. Electrostatic-like acceleration exhibiting more directional and elongated exhaust plume was achieved by a dual layer MHCD at the total input power less than 10 W with argon flow rate of 40 sccm. V-I characteristic indicated that there was an optimal regime for dual-stage operation where the acceleration voltage across the second stage remained constant. Estimated exhaust plume length showed a similar trend to the analytic estimate of exhaust velocity which scales with an acceleration voltage. ${\mu}PT$ with multiple holes exhibited similar performance with single-hole thruster indicating that higher power loading is possible owing to decreased power through each hole. Boltzmann plot of atomic argon spectral lines showed average electron excitation temperature of about 2.6 eV (~30,170 K) in the exhaust plume.
