Jitter induced from several payloads on-board satellites degrade the performance of pointing accuracy and attenuate the resolving power of highly-precise camera image such as KOMPSAT II. In this paper, we introduce a micro-vibration measurement technique, analysis of dynamic characteristics, and modeling method for a reaction wheel assembly which is one of the major sources of jitter in satellites and an effective vibration reduction techniques are considered. Based on these techniques, vibration measurement and passive control were performed with an micro-vibration generator which was designed to have similar dynamic performances with an actual reaction wheel assembly above 50Hz.
Flake-type micro hollow silica was synthesized by precipitation method using an $Mg(OH)_2$ inorganic template and sodium silicate and ammonium sulfate as the silica precursors. We investigated the effects of the silica precursor concentration on the shape, shell thickness, and surface of the hollow silica. When the concentration of the silica precursor was 0.5 M, the hollow silica had a smooth and translucent thin shell, but the shell was broken. On the other hand, the shell thickness of the hollow silica changed in the range of 12 nm to 18 nm with the increase of the precursor concentration from 0.7 M to 1.1 M. Simultaneously, unintended spherical silica satellites were created on the shell surface. The number of satellites and the size rose according to the increased concentration of silica precursor. The reason for the formation of spherical silica satellites is that the $NH_4OH$ nucleus generated in the synthesis of hollow silica acted as another silica reaction site.
Radio occultation (RO) technique has been used in planetary science since 1960s. When signal goes through atmosphere, it is refracted due to the gradient of atmospheric refractivity. In 1995, the first low earth orbit (LEO) satellite, MicroLab-1, was launched to conduct RO mission. It receives the signal from global positioning system (GPS) satellites. After MicroLab-1, other RO missions, such as CHAMP, SAC-C, and GRACE, are executed in several years later. In 2006, Taiwan launched six LEO satellites for RO mission. The mission name is Constellation Observing System for Meteorology, Ionosphere and Climate (COSMIC). Under some abnormal situations, multipath and strong fluctuation in phase and amplitude of the signal appear in moist troposphere. Therefore, open loop (OL) technique has been applied to replace traditional phase lock loop (PLL) technique. In this paper, we will summarize the retrieval processing procedure and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of OL technique.

Hall thrusters are one of the electric propulsion, where ions are accelerated to generate thrust and are widely utilized in space missions due to their high specific impulses. Recently, as the utilization of small and micro satellites with the mass of similar or less than 100 kg is highly increasing, the importance of research and development of the low-power electric propulsion is also raised. In this study, we developed two sub-200 W or less class, laboratory model Hall thrusters and measured the thrust and analyzed the discharge characteristics. Consequently, we obtained 2.5-9.0 mN of thrust, 600-1,150 s of specific impulse, and 15-28% of anode efficiency at 50-175 W of anode power.

In this study, the minimized on-board computer (OBC) module for integrated navigation is developed, which provides satellites' relative position information in formation flying and cluster operation situations. The scalability is considered to apply the user-selected wireless communication module and Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver for navigation, while considering to meet the structural design standard of nano-satellites. As a result of the product development and production, the processing speed of integrated navigation and real-time data synchronization is satisfied for cluster operation nano-satellites by using micro controller unit (MCU). From a heat/vacuum, vibration and radiation test, the OBC was confirmed to be operated in space environments. From these results, a mass production system of OBC was made which is a key part of development on satellite formation flying and cluster/constellation missions that the community demands are increasing.

Over testing problems of satellites and theirs components have been issued due to their effects on satellite development cost and schedule. Force limited vibration tests were introduced as solution of the problems in 1980s. Over testing phenomena occurs due to the lack of similarity on interface impedance. Force limited vibration tests control interface force to simulate actual interface impedance. In this research, force limited vibration tests are applied on two satellites environmental tests. Force limits are calculated by using TDFS method and Semi-Empirical method. Four force sensors are employed to control interface force. The tests prove that force limited control reduced maximum interface acceleration in order of 3.

Spaceborne cryocoolers produce undesirable micro-vibration disturbances during their on-orbit operation, which are a primary source of image-quality degradation for high-resolution observation satellites. Therefore, to comply with the strict mission requirement of high-quality image acquisition, micro-vibration disturbances induced by cooler operation have always been subjected to an isolation objective. However, in this study, we focused on the applicability of energy harvesting technology to generate electrical energy from micro-vibration energy of the cooler and investigated the feasibility of utilizing harvested energy as a power source to operate low-power-consumption devices such as micro-electromechanical system (MEMS) devices. A tuned mass damper (TMD)-type electromagnetic energy harvester combined with a conventional passive vibration isolator was proposed to achieve this objective. The system performs the dual functions of electrical energy generation and micro-vibration isolation. The effectiveness of the strategy was evaluated through numerical simulations.
Micro planar type liquid propellant thruster was fabricated by MEMS manufacturing process for micro/nano satellites applications. 90 wt.% hydrogen peroxide was used as propellant and for propellant decomposition, Pt/Al2O3 was used as catalyst. Micro thruster structure was made by 5 photosensitive glasses patterned with thruster component profiles. Objective thrust was 50 mN and required hydrogen peroxide mass flow was 2.1 ml/min, which was supplied by syringe pump and teflon tube in experimental test. Performance test said that average steady thrust was approximately 30 mN, around 60% of objective thrust, and transient time was about 5 sec. It is estimated that extended response time was due to high thermal energy loss of micro scale thruster and low enthalpy input by propellant mass flow.

Electric propulsion is a type of space propulsion with a high specific impulse by accelerating propellant using electrical energy and brings about reduction of the fuel mass and launch costs of satellites so that it is being extensively studied in the world. Electric thrusters are widely used for various purposes from micro satellites to large satellites and from low Earth orbit satellites to spacecraft for exploration. Recently, satellites using full-electric propulsion have been developed, and the number of satellites with electric propulsion is also gradually increasing. In this paper, the current status and trends of research on electric propulsion in the United States, Europe, and Japan will be reported.
