$SiO_2$-coated $TiO_2$ composite materials with enhanced photocatalytic activity under UV light was prepared by a simple catalytic hydrolysis method. XRD, TEM, UV-vis spectroscopy, Photoluminescence, FT-IR and XP spectra were used to characterize the prepared samples. The obvious shell-core structure was shown for obtained $SiO_2$@$TiO_2$ sample. The average thickness of the $SiO_2$ coating layer was 2-3 nm. The interaction between $SiO_2$ and $TiO_2$ restrained the recombination of excited electrons and holes. The photocatalytic activities were tested in the degradation of an aqueous solution of a reactive dyestuff, methylene blue, under UV light. The photocatalytic activity of $SiO_2$@$TiO_2$ was much higher than that of P25 and mechanical mixing sample $SiO_2/TiO_2$. The possible mechanism for the photocatalysis was proposed.
Fe-carbon/$TiO_2$ composites were prepared by a sol-gel method using AC, ACF, CNT and $C_{60}$ as carbon precursors and were characterized by means of BET surface area, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). The activity of the prepared photocatalysts was investigated by degradation reaction of methylene blue (MB) irradiated with UV lamp. Effects of different carbon sources and irradiation time on photocatalytic activity were also investigated. The results showed that the photocatalytic activity of the Fe-carbon/$TiO_2$ composites was much higher than that of pristine $TiO_2$ and Fe/$TiO_2$ composites. The prominent photocatalytic activity of Fecarbon/$TiO_2$ composites could be attributed to both the effects of photo-adsorption and electron transfer by carbon substrate. In addition, the higher photocatalytic activity of Fe-carbon/$TiO_2$ composites can be compared with that of carbon/$TiO_2$ and Fe /$TiO_2$ composites due to cooperative effects between Fe and carbon.
Highly self-cleaning thin films of $TiO_2-SiO_2$ co-doped with Ag and F are prepared by the sol-gel method. The asprepared thin films consist of bottom $SiO_2$ and top $TiO_2$ layers which are modified by doping with F, Ag and F-Ag elements. XRD analysis confirms that the prepared thin film is a crystalline anatase phase. UV-vis spectra show that the light absorption of $Ag-F-TiO_2/SiO_2$ thin films is tuned in the visible region. The self-cleaning properties of the prepared films are evaluated by a water contact angle measurement under UV light irradiation. The photocatalytic performances of the thin films are studied using methylene blue dye under both UV and visible light irradiation. The $Ag-F-TiO_2/SiO_2$ thin films exhibit higher photocatalytic activity under both UV and visible light compared with other samples of pure $TiO_2$, Ag-doped $TiO_2$, and F-doped $TiO_2$ films.

This study introduces a NaOH/Zn-assisted hydrothermal method for the synthesis of zeolites derived from coal ash (CA). A zeolite/Zn adsorbent is successfully prepared by the activation of CA with NaOH and Zn; it is characterized by a high surface area and a negative surface charge.Methylene blue (MB) and methyl orange (MO) are selected as dye pollutants, and their adsorption onto the zeolite/Zn adsorbent is investigated. Results show the high adsorption capacities of MB and MO and that the negative surface charge facilitates electrostatic interactions between the adsorbates and adsorbents. The zeolite/Zn adsorbents shows the selective adsorption of positively charged dye MB via electrostatic interactions between the =NH+ group (positive dipole) and the oxygen functional group of the adsorbents (negative dipole). The selectivity for the positively charged dye is sufficiently high, with the removal efficiency reaching 99.41% within 10 min. By contrast, the negatively charged dye MO exhibits negligible absorption. These findings confirm the role of electrostatic interactions in the adsorption of MB, in addition to the effect of a large surface area. The results of this study are expected to facilitate the development of simple, eco-friendly, and cost-effective zeolite-based adsorptive composites from CA residuals for the selective removal of dye pollutants from CA waste.
To evaluate the marginal leakage in Class V cavity this study has been undertaken to compare the sandwich technique with the conventional method, and find out the effect of lining material, lining method, and polishing time on sandwich technique. Ninty extracted teeth were divided into eight test groups and a control group, and were prepared with a buccal Class V cavity. Four test groups were lined with Dentin Cement whereas the other four test groups were lined with Vitrabond. Half of the either group were lined 0.5mm short of the carvosurface margin and the rest were lined completely to the carvosurface margin. The four subgroups were further divided into specimens which were polished immediately and 24 hours after resin filling. The polished specimens were immersed in $37^{\circ}C$, 0.5% methylene blue solution for 24 hous after thermocycling at $5^{\circ}C$ and $55^{\circ}C$, 200 times and buccolingually sectioned. The sectioned specimens were examined dye penetration under the light microscope. The following results were obtained, 1. At the enamel margin, the conventional method showed a lower microleakage than the sandwich technique. The difference between the control and Vitrabond group was statistically significant(P<0.05), but no difference between the control and Dentin Cement group, and between the lining materials was observed. 2. At the dentinal margin, the sandwich technique showed a significant lower amount of microleakage (P<0.05), but there was no significant difference between the lining materials. 3. Regardless of the lining material, lining method, and polishing time used, values of microleakage were significantly higher at the dentinal margin compared to the enamel margin(P<0.05). 4. In specimens till the cavosurface margin, microleakage at the dentinal margin was less with the light-cured base than with the chemically-cured base, but there was no siginificantly difference between the lining materials regarding the lining method and polishing time. 5. The lining material, lining method, and polishing time did not affect the amount of micro leakage in the sandwich technique(P<0.05).
The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of canal irrigants and the method of canal filling on the quality of canal obturation. Sixty extracted human teeth with single root were selected and divided into three different groups; In group I (control); 5 cc normal saline irrigated after each instrumentation In group II; 2.5 cc-3% NaOCl in combination with 2.5 cc-3% $H_2O_2$ In group III; RC-Prep in combination with 5 cc-3% NaOCl All specimens were cleaned, shaped(#50 file size), irrigated and obturated by lateral condensation and automated thermatic condensation filling method of gutta-percha and AH-26. After all the specimens were immersed in 2% methylene blue dye solution in $37^{\circ}C$ for 7 days and the degree of dye penetration into the canals observed by magnifying glass(${\times}$20) and reflected light microscope The results were as follows: 1. All the the teeth showed some degree of the dye penetration. 2. There were no significant difference among three groups in the degree of the dye penetration in each canal filling method. 3. There were no significant difference of the dye penetration between each canal filling method in group I. 4. There were no statistically significant difference of the dye penetration between each canal filling method in group II and group III, but lateral condensation group was showed slightly more than automated thermatic condensation group.
The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of canal preparation on the property of apical seal. Seventy canals from extracted human maxillary and mandibular teeth were randomly selected and divided into two groups: conventional group and step-back group. Thirty five canals in one group were enlarged with a, conventional preparation method and thirty five canals in the other group were instrumented in a step-back method with K-file. After instrumentation sixty canals were obturated by lateral condensation of gutta percha and zinc oxide eugenol cement, and five canals in each group were not filled and used as control. All the specimens were immersed in 2% methylene blue dye solution and the depth of dye penetration into the canals were observed by macroscope at the intervals of 1 day, 2 days, and 7 days. The following results were obtained. 1. All the canals experimented showed varying degrees of dye penetration. 2. There was no significant difference between conventional method and step-back method in the depth of dye penetration and the degree of dye penetration tended to increase with time passage in both groups. 3, In conventional preparation group the mean dye penetration was 3.6mm at 1 day, 4.8mm at 2 days. and 6.5mm at 7 days. 4. In step-back prepareation group, the specimens exposed to the dye for 1 day showed mean dye penetration of 4.1mm, and the specimens immersed in the dye for 2 days and 7 days revealed mean dye penetration of 4.6mm and 6.2mm respectively.
The aim of this study was to compare the marginal leakage of class II light curing composite resin restoration according to filling methods. With using acid etching technique and dentin bonding agent, various methods were suggested to eliminate or reduce the marginal leakage. In this study, class II cavities were prepared in 100 extracted human premolars with cementum margin(1mm below the CEJ) and the teeth were randomly assigned to 5 groups of 20 teeth each. The teeth in group 1, 2, 3 and 4 were restored by direct filling methods using P-50 and Clearfil Photoposterior of 10 teeth each, but the method of insertion of the restorative materials varied with each group. And the teeth in group 5 were restored by inlay method using Kulzer Inlay and CR Inlay. Filling methods are as follows : Group 1 : The composite resin was inserted in one layer in the proximal box and one layer in the occlusal portion. Group 2 : Insertion was in two equally thick horizontal layers in the proximal box. Group 3 : Insertion was in two diagonally placed layers in the proximal box. Group 4 : The composite resin was inserted in the same way as in group 3 except that a glass ionomer liner was first placed on the axial wall and gingival floor. Group 5 : The teeth were restored by Inlay technique using dure cure resin cement. All the teeth were thermocycled, stained with 1 % methylene blue solution, sectioned mesiodistally, and scored for marginal leakage. To compare the marginal leakage, ANOVA and T-test were used in analysis. The following results were obtained : 1. In direct filling methods, there was no significant difference in marginal leakage at both occlusal and cervical margins. 2. In all groups, occlusal margin showed significantly less leakage than cervical margin. 3. In group using glass ionomer liner, there was no significant reduction of marginal leakage at the cervical margin. 4. The group restored by inlay method showed significantly less marginal leakage than groups restored by direct filling methods at both occlusal and gingival margins. 5. There was no significant difference in each group according to filling materials.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the microleakage of retrofilled teeth with various materials [non-zinc Amalgam, IRM, Ketac-silver, CGP(cold-burnished, ultrafil)[and instruments for cavity preparation. Root apex were resected 2mm from apex horizontally and class I cavities were prepared in 2mm denpth, 1.5mm width and were filled with above mentioned materials. Root apex were resected 2mm from apex horizontally and class I cavities were prepared in 2mm depth, 1. 5mm width and were filled with above mentioned materials. 2% methylene blue dye solution was used for 4 days immersion and the linear leakage was measured with calipers and the volumetric leakage was determined with a spectrophotometer. The results were as follows : 1. Amalgam group showed the greatest amount of leakage and Ketac-silver group showed the least value. 2. By linear leakage test, the group retrofilled with Ketac-silver, or CGP showed better seal than the group of Amalgam or IRM. This was shown in both retrograde tip and Conventional method. 3. By volumetric leakage test, the group retrofilled with Ketac-silver showed significantly better seal than the group with IRM in retrograde tip method. 4. By volumetric leakage test, the group retrofilled with Ketac-silver showed significantly better seal than the group with Amalgam in the Conventional method.
Mineralogical and chemical characterization of some domestic bentonites, such as quantitative XRD analysis, chemical leaching experiments, pH and CEC determinations, were done without any separation procedures to understand their relationships among mineral composition, characteristics, and cation exchange properties. XRD quantification results based on Rietveld method reveal that the bentonites contain totally more than 25 wt% of impurities, such as zeolites, opal-CT, and feldspars, in addition to montmorillonite ranging 30~75 wt%. Cation exchange properties of the zeolitic bentonites are deeply affected by the content of zeolites identified as clinoptilolite-heulandite series. Clinoptilolite is common in the silicic bentonites with lighter color. and occurs closely in association with opal-CT. Ca is mostly the dominant exchangeable cation, but some zeolitic bentonites have K as a major exchangeable cation, The values of cation exchange capacity (CEC) determined by Methylene Blue method are comparatively low and have roughly a linear relationship with the montmorillonite content of the bentonite, though the correlated data tend to be rather dispersed. Compared to this, the CEC determined by Ammonium Acetate method, i.e.‘Total CEC’, has much higher values (50~115 meq/100 g). The differences between those CEC values are much greater in zeolitic bentonites, which obviously indicates the CEC increase affected by zeolite. Other impurities such as opal-CT and feldspars seem to affect insignificantly on the CEC of bentonites. When dispersed in distilled water, the pH of bentonites roughly tends to increase up to 9.3 with increasing the alkali abundance, especially Na, in exchangeable cation composition. However, some bentonites exhibit lower pH (5~6) so as to regard as ‘acid clay’. This may be due to the presence of $H^{+}$ in part as an exchangeable cation in the layer site of montmorillonite. All the works of this study ultimately suggest that an assesment of domestic bentonites in grade and quality should be accomplished through the quantitative XRD analysis and the ‘Total CEC’measurement.
