Growth inhibitory effect of doenjang(Korean soypaste) methanol extracts in SRB assay using AGS human gastric adenocarcinoma cell, Hep 3B human hepatocellular carcinoma cell and HT 29 human colon cancer cell was studied. The treatment of doenjang methanol extracts(2mg/assay) to the AGS, Hep 3B and HT 29 cancer cells inhibited the growth of the cancer cells by 55%, 60%, and 71%, respectively. Doenjang methanol extracts exhibited the highest inhibitory effect among other soybean fermented foods and original materials in the SRB assay. In addition, to separate active compounds of doenjang methanol extracts, we fractionated the doenjang with hexane, methanol, dichloromethane, ethylacetate and butanol. Growth inhibitory effect on the AGS, Hep 3B, HT 29 and MG 63 cancer cells was the highest in the fractions of dichloromethane and ethylacetate among other solvent fractions of the doenjang. These results showed that some compounds contained in the fractions of dichloromethane and ethylacetate might play a role on the anticanceric effect of doenjang.
For the research of antifungal active constituents from natural products, 226 plants were extracted with ether and methanol, separately, and screened antifungal activity against Candida albicans and Penicillium avellaneum cells. The results demonstrated that 30 samlpes showed antifungal activity in ether or methanol extracts and 17 samples in ether extracts and 20 samples in methanol extracts against C. albicans. Against P. avellaneum, 19 samlpes showed antifungal activity in ether or methanol extracts and 17 samples in ether extracts and 11 samples in methanol extracts, respectively. The antifungal activity of natural products against C. albicans were showed more sensitive than P. avellaneum, and the polarity of the solvent was not specific in antifungal activity.
This study was conducted to investigate the antioxidant activities of clove extracts in water, methanol and ether. The clove extracts, BHA and ${\alpha}$-tocopherol were added to each oil at a level of 200 ppm. The activities of the substrate oils and controls were tested under autoxidation and thermal oxidation conditions. The degree of the effects of the antioxidant activities under autoxidation condition were in the following order; ether extract 〉 methanol extract 〉BHA 〉 ${\alpha}$-tocopherol 〉 water extract = control group. The induction periods of the control, water, methanol and ether extracts, and BHA and ${\alpha}$-tocopherol were 9.5, 9.6, 10.7 11.8, 10.4 and 9.7 days, respectively. Under thermal oxidation condition, the methanol extract showed stronger antioxidant activity than those of the water and ether extracts. The antioxidant activity of the methanol extract was attributed to ${\alpha}$-tocopherol and BHA.
Methanol has been widely used as an industrial solvent and environmental exposure to methanol would be expected to be increasing. In humans, methanol causes metabolic acidosis and damage to ocular system, and can lead to death in severe and untreated case. Clinical symptoms are attributed to accumulation of forrnic acid which is a metabolic product of methanol. In humans and primates, formic acid is accumulated after methanol intake but not in rodents due to the rapid metabolism of methanol. Neverthless, the developmental and reproductive toxicity were reported in rodents. Previous reports showed that perinatal exposure to ethanol produces a variety of damage in human central nervous system by direct neurotoxicity. This suggests that the mechanism of toxic symptoms by methanol in rodents might mimic that of ethanol in human. In the present study I hypothesized that methanol can also induce toxicity in neuronal cells. For the study, primary culture of rat hippocampal neurons and glias were empolyed. Hippocampal cells were prepared from the embryonic day-17 fetuses and maintained up to 7 days. Effect of methanol (10, 100, 500 and 1000 mM) on neurite outgrowth and cell viability was investigated at 0, 18 and 24 hours following methanol treatment. To study the changes in proliferation of glial cells, protein content was measured at 7 days. Neuronal cell viability in culture was not altered during 0-24 hours after methanol treatment. 10 and 100 mM methanol treatment significantly enhanced neurite outgrowth between 18-24 hours. 7-day exposure to 10 or 100 mM methanol significantly increased protein contents but that to 1000 mM methanol decreased in culture. In conclusion, methanol may have a variety of effects on growing and differentiation of neurons and glial cells in hippocampus. Treatment with low concentration of methanol caused that neurite outgrowth was enhanced during 18-24 hours and the numbers of glial cell were increased for 7 days. High concentration of methanol brought about decreased protein contents. At present, the mechanism responsible for the methanol- induced enhancement of neurite outgrowth is not clear. Further studies are required to delineate the mechanism possibly by employing molecular biological techniques.

Solvent effects on the kinetics of bromophenol blue fading have been investigated within a temperature range in binary mixtures of methanol, ethanol, 1-propanol, ethylene glycol and 1,2-propanediol with water of varying solvent compositions up to 40% by weight of organic solvent component. Correlation of logk with reciprocal of the dielectric constant was linear. Finally a mechanism was proposed for the bromophenol blue fading upon SESMORTAC (study of effect of solvent mixture on the one-step reaction rates using the transition state theory and cage effect) model, by means of this model, the fundamental rate constants of the fading reaction in these solvent systems were calculated.
Astaxanthin is one of the carotenoid with strong antioxidant. The conditions of extraction of astaxanthin from Portunus trituberculatus were optimized in this work. Six factors of conditions such as, extraction method, extraction solvent, ratio of solvent to raw material, temperature, and time, were investigated. For the increase of the extraction yield, ionic liquids were used as additives in the extraction solvent. The optimum extraction conditions were found: heat reflux extraction, Dichloromethane/methanol (25:75, v/v) as solvent, 1:30 of the ratio of solvent raw material, $80^{\circ}C$, 90 min, and ionic liquid as additive. As a result, 45.81 ${\mu}g/g$ of astaxanthin was extracted from waste.
Preferential solvation (PS) phenomena of solutes based on solvent polarity, $E_T$ and AN, were studied by UV/vis. and NMR spectra in MeOH binary mixtures. According to the extent of solvent-solvent interaction, different solvation phenomena were found. PS concept was applied to explain the reactivity of tert-butyl halides solvolysis. The findings of solvation phenomena have been related to the rate of solvolysis and PS suggested as a reason for the solvent dependence of the rates of reaction. Moreover, we found that the results of principal components analysis using six parameters are in good accordance with the results of PS phenomena in mixed methanol systems.
Recent interest in the possible protective effects of dietary antioxidant compounds against human degenerative disease has prompted investigation of foods such as blueberries, which have a high antioxidant capacity. This study was performed to determine the antioxidative activity of methanol extract and solvent fractions from blueberry. Blueberry was extracted with methanol and then fractionated with n-hexane, EtOAc, BuOH and water to get active fractions. And their antioxidant capacities in each fraction were determined by using the DPPH and FRAP assay, and tyrosinase inhibitor. Ethyl acetate fraction of blueberry exhibited antioxidant capacity.
A strain of Streptomyces sp. SK-862, isolated from soil in Wonju city, was able to prodce a biologically active substance that has a strong inhibitory activity against proteolsis by trypsin. The inhyibitory substance was extracted by n-butanol, and then purified by the adsorption chromatography followed by the reverse-phase high performacne liquid chromatography. The purified substance was stable over the pH range from 2 to 10, but was unstable when treated at 8$0^{\circ}C$ for 60 min. This substance was soluble in water, methanol, ethanol nd butanol, but insoluble in chlorofrom and ethylacetate. The Rf value of the purified substance on the thin layer chromatography were 0.56 in n-butanol : methanol : water(5 : 3 : 1v/v) solvent system compare dto 0.23 in ethanol : ammonium hydoxide : water(8 : 1 : 1v/v) solvent system. This substance has maximum absorption at 259 nm. The chemical reaction of the substance was negative for sugar but positive for ninhydrine and iodine reaction.
Perdeuterated hexaflouroacetylacetonato-ytterbium [Yb(SOL-D)$_3$] complexes were synthesized by the keto-enol tautomerism reaction of Yb(SOL-H)$_3$in methanol-d$_4$in order to reduce the radiationless transition to the ligands. The luminescence properties of Yb(SOL-D)$_3$complex were measured in the following anhydrous deuterated organic solvents ; Methanol-d$_4$, THF-d$_{8}$, PO(O$CH_3$)$_3$and DMSO-d$_{6}$. The intensity, lifetime and quantum efficiency of the luminescence in DMSO-d$_{6}$ were superior to those in other deuterated solvents. It was suggested that the anhydrous DMSO-d$_{6}$ might be the most appropriate solvent for the liquid laser material of Yb(SOL-D)$_3$complex.complex.
