Petroleum-contaminated soil is considered among the most important potential anthropogenic atmospheric methane sources. Additionally, various rhizoremediation factors can affect methane emissions by altering soil ecosystem carbon cycles. Nonetheless, greenhouse gas emissions from soil have not been given due importance as a potentially relevant parameter in rhizoremediation techniques. Therefore, in this study we sought to investigate the effects of different plant and soil amendments on both remediation efficiencies and methane emission characteristics in diesel-contaminated soil. An indoor pot experiment consisting of three plant treatments (control, maize, tall fescue) and two soil amendments (chemical nutrient, compost) was performed for 95 days. Total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) removal efficiency, dehydrogenase activity, and alkB (i.e., an alkane compound-degrading enzyme) gene abundance were the highest in the tall fescue and maize soil system amended with compost. Compost addition enhanced both the overall remediation efficiencies, as well as pmoA (i.e., a methane-oxidizing enzyme) gene abundance in soils. Moreover, the potential methane emission of diesel-contaminated soil was relatively low when maize was introduced to the soil system. After microbial community analysis, various TPH-degrading microorganisms (Nocardioides, Marinobacter, Immitisolibacter, Acinetobacter, Kocuria, Mycobacterium, Pseudomonas, Alcanivorax) and methane-oxidizing microorganisms (Methylocapsa, Methylosarcina) were observed in the rhizosphere soil. The effects of major rhizoremediation factors on soil remediation efficiency and greenhouse gas emissions discussed herein are expected to contribute to the development of sustainable biological remediation technologies in response to global climate change.
The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of dietary hydrolysable tannin on growth performance and methane emissions of Hanwoo beef cows. Fifteen cows participated in a seven-week experiment. The cows were stratified by initial methane emissions and assigned to one of two treatments: Control and tannin supplementation. Commercial hydrolysable tannin was top-dressed to a concentrate mix at 3 g/kg based on the dry matter. Enteric methane production was measured for 4 consecutive days at 1 week before and 1, 3 and 7 weeks after the initiation of the experiment using a laser methane detector. The feed intake was measured daily during the methane measurement periods and an additional two days prior to each measurement. The body weight of the cows was measured every 4 weeks. Hydrolysable tannin had no effect (p > 0.05) on body weight, average daily gain, dry matter intake (DMI) and feed conversion ratio. After one week, the methane emission of the tannin supplementation group was 3.66 ppm-m / kg DMI, which was about 3.4% lower (p = 0.078) than that of the control group; however, this tendency disappeared at 3 weeks after the start of the experiment (p > 0.05). The results of this study show that hydrolysable tannin supplementation can reduce enteric methane emissions for a limited period in Hanwoo beef cows. More research, however, is needed to determine the optimal level of hydrolysable tannin supplementation to reduce enteric methane emissions for a longer period without adversely affecting the animal performance of Hanwoo beef cattle.

This experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of leachate replacement frequency on solid state anaerobic digestion (SSAD) of dairy manure using 22 L volume lab-scale digesters at mesophilic temperature ($37^{\circ}C$) in batch mode. Three different leachate replacement strategies (no replacement, once every three days, and once every nine days) were applied and three digesters per each treatment were operated for 45 days. Results showed that leachate replacement test unit every nine days resulted in 1.6 times more methane production ($53.8N{\cdot}mL\;g^{-1}{\cdot}VS$) from SSAD compared to test unit every three days ($34.0N{\cdot}mL\;g^{-1}{\cdot}VS$). No leachate replacement strategy applied group showed slightly higher methane production ($56.3N{\cdot}mL\;g^{-1}{\cdot}VS$) than every nine days replaced one. When added the methane production potential of replaced leachate itself to the methane produced from digester, leachate replacement every nine days resulted in quite similar methane production ($56.5N{\cdot}mL\;g^{-1}{\cdot}VS$) to no leachate replacement group. Even though methane production potential of replaced leachate itself added to the methane produced from digester, every three days replacement showed only $34N{\cdot}mL$ methane production per gram of volatile solids. These results suggest that farmers do not need to replace leachate during SSAD of dairy manure and sawdust mixture in order to maximize methane production. If there are any concerns with accumulation of inhibiting substances in the digester, the 9-day cycle leachate replacement is appropriate.
Three experiments were conducted to determine the conversion rate of formic and acetic acids into methane in the gastrointestinal tracts of geese. In experiment I, two sets of two 4-month-old male White Roman geese were allocated to one of two treatment groups. Each set of geese was inoculated either with formic acid or with phosphate buffer solution (PBS). After the acid or the PBS was inoculated into the esophagi of the geese, two birds from each treatment were placed in a respiratory chamber as a measurement unit for 4 h in order to determine methane production rate. In experiment II and III, 6- and 7-wk-old male White Roman goslings were used, respectively. Birds were allocated to receive either formic acid or PBS solution injected into the ceca in experiment II. Acetic acid or PBS solution injected into the cecum were used for experiment III. After either the acids or the PBS solution were injected into the cecum, two birds from each treatment were placed in a respiratory chamber as a measurement unit for 3 h; each treatment was repeated 3 times. The results indicated that formic acid inoculated into the oesophagi of geese was quickly converted into methane. Compared with the PBS-injected group, methane production increased by 5.02 times in the formic acid injected group (4.32 vs. 0.86 mg/kg BW/d; p<0.05). Acetic acid injected into the ceca did not increase methane production; conversely, it tended to decrease methane production. The present study suggests that formic acid may be converted to methane in the ceca, and that acetic acid may not be a precursor of methane in the ceca of geese.

This study was conducted to compare the methane ($CH_4$) production estimated by in vivo (sulfur hexafluoride tracer technique ($SF_6$)) with that of two in vitro rumen simulation (RUSITEC) and gas production (IVGPT)) techniques. Four adult dry Holstein cows, aged $7.4{\pm}3.0$ years and weighing $697{\pm}70$ kg, were used for measuring methane production from five diets by the $SF_6$ technique. The experimental diets were alfalfa hay ($D_1$), corn silage + soybean meal (SBM) (910: 90, $D_2$), Italian rye grass hay +SBM (920: 80, $D_3$), rice straw +SBM (910: 90, $D_4$) and Sudan grass hay +SBM (920: 80, $D_5$). Each diet was individually fed to all 4 cows and 5 feeding studies of 17 d each were conducted to measure the methane production. In the RUSITEC, methane production was measured from triplicate vessels for each diet .In vitro gas production was measured for each of the diets in triplicate syringes. The gas produced after 24 and 48 h was recorded and gas samples were collected in vacuum vials and the methane production was calculated after correction for standard temperature and pressure (STP). Compared to the $SF_6$ technique, estimates of methane production using the RUSITEC were lower for all diets. Methane production estimated from 24 h in vitro gas production was higher (p<0.001) on $D_1$ as compared to that measured by $SF_6$, whereas on $D_2$ to $D_5$ it was lower. Compared to $SF_6$, methane production estimated from 48 h in vitro gas production was higher on all diets. However, methane estimated from the mean of the two measurement intervals (24+48 h/2) in IVGPT was very close to that of $SF_6$ (correlation 0.98), except on $D_1$. The results of our study confirmed that IVGPT is reflective of in vivo conditions, so that it could be used to generate a database on methane production potential of various ruminant diets and to examine strategies to modify methane emissions by ruminants.
Ni catalyst (Ni: 15 wt%) supported on precalcined SiO2 has been investigated in reforming reactions of methane to synthesis gas. The catalyst exhibited fairly good activity and stability in partial oxidation of methane (POM), whereas it deactivated in steam reforming of methane (SRM). Pulse reaction results of CH4, O2, and CH4/O2 revealed that Ni/SiO2 has high capability to dissociate methane. The results also revealed that both CH4 and O2 are activated on the surface of metallic Ni, and then surface carbon species react with adsorbed oxygen to produce CO and CO2 depending on the bond strength of the oxygen species on the catalyst surface.
Spectrophotometric determination of isonicotinic acid hydrazide sodium methane sulfonate was examined and a new method has been established. Isonicotinic acid hydrazide sodium methane sulfonate reacts with acetylacetone solution (NASH Reagent) to produce a yellow dye, which exhibits absorption maximum at about $412\;m{\mu}$. Limits of masurement of isonicotinic acid hydrazide sodium methane sulfonate was $20-100{\mu}g/ml$. By this method isonicotinic acid hydrazide methane sulfonate can be determined in the presence of isonicotinic acid hydrazide.
When methane hydrate is artificially formed to store and transport large quantity of natural gas, its reaction time may be too long and the gas consumption in water becomes relatively low, the reaction rate between water and methane gas is low. Therefore, the present investigation focuses on the rapid production of hydrates and increases the gas consumption by injecting water into methane gas utilizing nozzle. the hydrate in water injection using a nozzle formed rapidly more than that in gas injection, and the gas consumption of methane hydrate in water injection is about three to four times greater than that in gas injection according to subcooling.
The model gas reaction tests were carried out to investigate the purification characteristics of methane on the exclusive catalyst for NGV. The experiment was conducted with the factors which affect the conversion efficiency of methane, such as Redox ratio, coexistence components of CO, MO, $H_2$O, precious metals and additives. The catalyst loaded with larger amount of pd and with additive La showed lower light-off temperature. In the presence of CO and NO, the conversion efficiency of methane was varied according to the kind of additive loaded. The conversion efficiency of methane was dropped for the catalyst loaded with La under lean air-fuel ratio, while it increased for the one loaded with Ti+Zr for the same condition. It was shown that the water vapor inhibited methane from oxidation by its poisoning on the surface of catalyst.
