The main objectives of this study are to introduce Global Seasonal forecasting system version5 (GloSea5) of KMA and to evaluate the performance of ensemble prediction of system. KMA has performed an operational seasonal forecast system which is a joint system between KMA and UK Met office since 2014. GloSea5 is a fully coupled global climate model which consists of atmosphere (UM), ocean (NEMO), land surface (JULES) and sea ice (CICE) components through the coupler OASIS. The model resolution, used in GloSea5, is N216L85 (~60 km in mid-latitudes) in the atmosphere and ORCA0.25L75 ($0.25^{\circ}$ on a tri-polar grid) in the ocean. In this research, we evaluate the performance of this system using by RMSE, Correlation and MSSS for ensemble mean values. The forecast (FCST) and hindcast (HCST) are separately verified, and the operational data of GloSea5 are used from 2014 to 2015. The performance skills are similar to the past study. For example, the RMSE of h500 is increased from 22.30 gpm of 1 week forecast to 53.82 gpm of 7 week forecast but there is a similar error about 50~53 gpm after 3 week forecast. The Nino Index of SST shows a great correlation (higher than 0.9) up to 7 week forecast in Nino 3.4 area. It can be concluded that GloSea5 has a great performance for seasonal prediction.

Communication Ocean Meteorological Satellite (COMS) has the hybrid mission of meteorological observation, ocean monitoring, and telecommunication service. The COMS is located at $128.2{\circ}$ east longitude on the geostationary orbit and currently under normal operation service since April 2011. In order to perform the three missions, the COMS has 3 separate payloads, the meteorological imager (MI), the Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI), and the Ka-band communication payload. The satellite controls for the three mission operations and the satellite maintenance are done by the real-time operation which is the activity to communicate directly with the satellite through command and telemetry. In this paper the real-time operation for COMS is discussed in terms of the ground station configuration and the characteristics of daily, weekly, monthly, seasonal, and yearly operation activities. The successful real-time operation is also confirmed with the one year operation results for 2011 which includes both the latter part of the In-Orbit-Test (IOT) and the first year normal operation of the COMS.

The COMS(Communication, Ocean & Meteorological Satellite) is the geostationary satellite which will be performing three main objectives such as meteorological service, ocean monitoring and Ka-band satellite communications. In order to accomplish these missions, the COMS system needs to implement a specific electrical/mechanical interface functions which are requested by each payload units. This paper describes a on-board interface hardware design for COMS Meteorological Imager(MI). The Meteorological Imager Interface Unit(MI2U) achieves, through MIL-STD-15533 system bus, the interface between the Spacecraft Computer Unit(SCU) and the instrument which is dedicated to MI. MI2U provides a necessary power input to MI from +50V Power Supply Regulator(PSR), and allows adaptation of the specific payload interfaces and protocol to COMS spacecraft.
Air temperature deviation (ATD) is one of major indicators to represent spatial distribution of urban heat island (UHI), which is induced from the urbanization. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the accuracy of air temperature deviation about Climate Analysis Seoul (CAS) workbench, which had developed by National Institute Meteorological Science and TU Berlin. Comparison and correlation analysis for CAS ATD including meso-scale air temperature deviation, local-scale air temperature deviation, total air temperature deviation, surface heat flux deviation, cold air production deviation among meso-scale numerical modelling variable in 'Seoul Region', micro-scale numerical modelling in 'Detail Region', and CAS workbench variable using observation data in ground stations. Comparison between night time OBS ATD and CAS ATD show that have most close values. Most of observations ($dT_{max}$ and $dT_{min}$) have highly positive ($dT_{SHP}$, $dT_{CA}$, MD, TD, $f_{BS}$, $f_{US}$, $f_{WS}$, $h_B$) and negative ($f_{VS}$, $f_{TV}$, $h_V$, Z) correlations. However, CAS workbench needs further improvement of both observational framework and analytical framework to resolve the problems; (1) night time OBS ATD of has closer values in compare with at high rise mountain area and (2) correlations are very dependable to meteorological scale.
Positioning accuracy by the Global Positioning System (GPS) is of great concern in a variety of research tasks. It is limited due to error sources such as ionospheric effect, orbital uncertainty, antenna phase center variation, signal multipath, and tropospheric influence. In this study, the tropospheric influence, primarily due to water vapour inhomogeneity, on GPS positioning height is investigated. The data collected by the GPS receivers along with co-located surface meteorological instruments in 2003 are utilized. The GPS receivers are established as continuously operating reference stations by the Ministry of the Interior (MOI), Central Weather Bureau (CWB), and Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) of Taiwan, and International GNSS Service (IGS). The total number of GPS receivers is 21. The surface meteorological measurements include temperature, pressure, and humidity. They are introduced to GPS data processing with 24 troposphere parameters for the station heights, which are compared with those obtained without a priori knowledge of surface meteorological measurements. The results suggest that surface meteorological measurements have an expected impact on the GPS height. The daily correction maximum with the meteorological effect may be as large as 9.3 mm for the cases of concern.
Communication Ocean Meteorological Satellite(COMS) for the hybrid mission of meteorological observation, ocean monitoring, and telecommunication service is planned to be launched onto Geostationary Earth orbit (GEO) in 2008 according to the korea national space program, For the development of the meteorological payload of COMS, imager, the characteristics of Modulation Transfer Function (MTF) for GEO meteorological imager is investigated and the theoretical MTF limit is analyzed for each spectral channel of the imager in the both cases of a currently operating GEO instrument technology and an advanced GEO instrument technology under development. This study shows that MTF value can be considerably low in the infrared channels with longer wavelength than 10㎛ due to diffraction effect so that the MTF performance of long wavelength infrared channels should be paid attention to for the development of the imager.
Recent years, due to the direct or indirect damages caused by meteorological disasters more and more attention have been paid to natural disasters. At same time, diversified and multi-sensory interactive meteorological services is increasingly demanded. In this study, novel interactive meteorological service was compared with the traditional communication methods. Combining with case studies and systems creation, a virtual reality weather simulation framework was proposed, and a realistic virtual game environment providing real-time and historical weather information was created. The primary goal of this study is to build a weather display cabinet game system by using virtual reality technology, and promoting public's understanding of the principles of weather changes. With the interactive games in realistic scenarios, public's awareness for disasters prevention could be promoted. It is helping to change public's traditional understanding of meteorological theories, and will provide a more convenient way for the public to explore more effective weather forecasts. The simulation system is supported by VR technology. It was combined with Leap Motion interactive equipment to make popularization games for weather science. T-test data analysis showed that the application of VR technology in weather games has strong operability and interactivity.
This paper presents a multiple parameters-based recursive methodology for the reliability quantification of civil structures subjected to meteorological disasters. Recognizing the challenge associated with characterizing at a single stroke all the meteorological disasters that may hit a structure during its service life, the proposed methodology by contrast features a multiparameter recursive mechanism to describe the meteorological demand of the structure. The benefit of the arrangements is that the essentially inevitable deviation of the practically observed meteorological data from those in the existing model can be mitigated in an adaptive manner. In particular, the implications of potential climate change to the relevant reliability of civil structures are allowed for. The application of the formulated methodology of recursive reliability quantification is illustrated by first considering the reliability quantification of a linear shear frame against simulated strong wind loads. A parametric study is engaged in this application to examine the effect of some hyperparameters in the configured hierarchical model. Further, the application is extended to a nonlinear hysteretic shear frame involving some field-observed cyclone data, and the incompleteness of the relevant structural diagnosis data that may arise in reality is taken into account. Also investigated is another application scenario where the reliability of a building envelope is assessed under hailstone impacts, and the emphasis is to demonstrate the recursive incorporation of newly obtained meteorological data.
The results of reference wind speed calculation in Croatia as a base for the revision of the Croatian standards for wind loads upon structures are presented. Wind speed averaged over 10 minutes, at 10 m height, in a flat, open terrain, with a 50-year mean return period is given for 27 meteorological stations in Croatia. It is shown that the greatest part of Croatia is covered with expected reference wind speeds up to 25 m/s. Exceptions are stations with specific anemometer location open to the bura wind which is accelerated due to the channelling effects of local orography and the nearby mountain passes where the expected reference wind speed ranges between 38 m/s and 55 m/s. The methodology for unifying all available information from wind measurements regardless of the averaging period is discussed by analysing wind speed variability at the meteorological station in Hvar.
