  • In order to calculate the accurate runoff from a basin, nonlinearity in the relationship between rainfall and runoff has to be considered. Many runoff calculation models assume the linearity in the relationship or are too complicated to be analyzed. Therefore, the storage function method has been used in the prediction of flood because of the simplicity of the model. The storage function method has five parameters with related to the basin and rainfall characteristics which can be estimated by the empirical trial and error method. To optimize these parameters, regression method or optimization techniques such as genetic algorithm have been used, however, it is not easy to optimize them because of the complexity of the method. In this study, the metamodel is proposed to estimate those model parameters. The metamodel is the combination of artificial neural network and genetic algorithm. The model is consisted of two stages. In the first stage, an artificial neural network is constructed using the given rainfall-runoff relationship. In the second stage, the parameters of the storage function method are estimated using genetic algorithm and the trained artificial neural network. The proposed metamodel is applied in the Peong Chang River basin and the results are presented.

  • If it takes much time to calculate the fitness of the solution in genetic algorithms, it is essential to create a metamodel. Much research has been completed to improve the performance of metamodels. In this study, we tried to get a better performance of metamotel using discrete Walsh transform in discrete domain. We transforms the basis of the solution and creates a metamodel using the transformed solution. We experimented with NK-landscape, a representative function of the pseudo-boolean function, and provided empirical evidence on the performance of the proposed model. When we performed the genetic algorithm using the proposed model, we confirmed that the genetic algorithm found a better solution. In particular, our metamodel showed better performance than that using the radial basis function network that modified the similarity function for the discrete domain.

  • To improve the accuracy of a metamodel, additional sample points can be selected by using a specified criterion, which is often called sequential sampling approach. Sequential sampling approach requires small computational cost compared to one-stage optimal sampling. It is also capable of monitoring the process of metamodeling by means of identifying an important design region for approximation and further refining the fidelity in the region. However, the existing critertia such as mean squared error, entropy and maximin distance essentially depend on the distance between previous selected sample points. Therefore, although sufficient sample points are selected, these sequential sampling strategies cannot guarantee the accuracy of metamodel in the nearby optimum points. This is because criteria of the existing sequential sampling approaches are inefficient to approximate extremum and inflection points of original model. In this research, new sequential sampling approach using the sensitivity of metamodel is proposed to reflect the response. Various functions that can represent a variety of features of engineering problems are used to validate the sensitivity approach. In addition to both root mean squared error and maximum error, the error of metamodel at optimum points is tested to access the superiority of the proposed approach. That is, optimum solutions to minimization of metamodel obtained from the proposed approach are compared with those of true functions. For comparison, both mean squared error approach and maximin distance approach are also examined.

  • An efficient sequential optimization approach for metamodel was presented by Choi et al. This paper describes a new approach of the multilevel optimization method studied in Refs. [2] and [20,21]. The basic idea is concerned with multilevel iterative methods which combine a descent scheme with a hierarchy of auxiliary problems in lower dimensional subspaces. After fitting a metamodel based on an initial space filling design, this model is sequentially refined by the expected improvement criterion. The advantages of the method are that it does not require optimum sensitivities, nonlinear equality constraints are not needed, and the method is relatively easy to understand and use. As a check on effectiveness, the proposed method is applied to an engineering example.

  • Metamodel, model of model, has been widely used to improve an efficiency of optimization process in engineering fields. However, global metamodels of constraints in a constrained optimization problem are required good accuracy around neighborhood of optimum point. To satisfy this requirement, more sampling points must be located around the boundary and inside of feasible region. Therefore, a new sampling strategy that is capable of identifying feasible domain should be applied to select sampling points for metamodels of constraints. In this research, we suggeste sequential feasible domain sampling that can locate sampling points likely within feasible domain by using penalty function method. To validate the excellence of feasible domain sampling, we compare the optimum results from the proposed method with those form conventional global space-filling sampling for a variety of optimization problems. The advantages of the feasible domain sampling are discussed further.

  • In this study, effective methods for reliability estimation and reliability-based design optimization(RBDO) are proposed using kriging metamodel and genetic algorithm. In our previous study, we proposed the accurate method for reliability estimation using two-staged kriging metamodel and genetic algorithm. In this study, the possibility of applying the previously proposed method to RBDO is examined. The accuracy of that method is much improved than the first order reliability method with similar efficiency. Finally, the effective method for RBDO is proposed and applied to numerical examples. The results are compared to the existing RBDO methods and shown to be very effective and accurate.

  • It is difficult to determine an optimal inventory level of aircraft engine and modules to achieve the target operational availability since F100-PW-200 & 229 engines of the F-16 & KF-16 aircraft are consisted of 5 modules with different failure rates and costs. This study presents a decision model, combining an integer programming problem and a regression metamodel. Data for the metamodel was attained from results of a simulation model, that represents operational and repair process of F-16 and KF-16. The objective function of an integer programming problem is maximizing the operational availability, representing pessimistic circumstances. Finally, an integer programming problem with a metamodel can make an optimal decision of the inventory level.

  • One of the current challenges in the domain of the multicriteria shape optimization is to reduce the calculation time required by conventional methods. The high computational cost is due to the high number of simulation or function calls required by these methods. Recently, several studies have been led to overcome this problem by integrating a metamodel in the overall optimization loop. In this paper, we perform a coupling between the Normal Boundary Intersection - NBI - algorithm with Radial Basis Function - RBF - metamodel in order to have a simple tool with a reasonable calculation time to solve multicriteria optimization problems. First, we apply our approach to academic test cases. Then, we validate our method against an industrial case, namely, shape optimization of the bottom of an aerosol can undergoing nonlinear elasto-plastic deformation. Then, in order to select solutions among the Pareto efficient ones, we use the same surrogate approach to implement a method to compute Nash and Kalai-Smorodinsky equilibria.

  • This study proposed an improved particle swarm optimization (IPSO) method ensemble with kriging model for model updating. By introducing genetic algorithm (GA) and grouping strategy together with elite selection into standard particle optimization (PSO), the IPSO is obtained. Kriging metamodel serves for predicting the structural responses to avoid complex computation via finite element model. The combination of IPSO and kriging model shall provide more accurate searching results and obtain global optimal solution for model updating compared with the PSO, Simulate Annealing PSO (SimuAPSO), BreedPSO and PSOGA. A plane truss structure and ASCE Benchmark frame structure are adopted to verify the proposed approach. The results indicated that the hybrid of kriging model and IPSO could serve for model updating effectively and efficiently. The updating results further illustrated that IPSO can provide superior convergent solutions compared with PSO, SimuAPSO, BreedPSO and PSOGA.
