This study was carried out to investigate the effect of welding parameters such as shielding gas compositions welding voltage and welding current on the pore formation in the weld beads of galvanized steel pipes produced with gas metal arc welding. The porosity was evaluated and rated by metallography and radiographic test in terms of weight percentage, number and distribution of pores in weld beads. The porosity increased with increasing welding voltage and current, in which Ar gas produced the most porosity while $Ar+5%O_2$ generated the least porosity. It was found that the porosity could be reduced by selection of the proper gas mixture composition such as $Ar+5%O_2$ and $Ar+10%CO_2$ and by using current (130~150A) and voltage(16~20V).
The effect of betatizing temperature on microstructure and transformation characteristics in a Cu-AI-Ni based pseudoelastic alloy fabricated by heated mold continuous casting by using metallography, XRD and calorimetry. The microstructure of cast rod betatized at $600^{\circ}C$ revealed a ${\beta}_1$ parent phase and a ${\gamma}_2$ phase precipitated along the casting direction. When the cast rod was betatized at the elevated temperature above $600^{\circ}C$, the ${\gamma}_2$ phase is completely dissolved into the matrix so that the volume fraction of the ${\gamma}_2$ phase was decreased. The parent phase was stabilized by betatizing at $600^{\circ}C$. However, the ${\beta}_1$ parent phase was transformed to both ${{\beta}_1}^{\prime}$ and ${{\gamma}_1}^{\prime}$ martensites with increasing betatizing temperatures above $600^{\circ}C$, while $M_s$ and $A_s$ temperatures were decreased. The stress-strain curves for compression test were not same with betatizing temperature; the stress-strain curves of the specimen betatized at $600^{\circ}C$ and $700^{\circ}C$ were linear but those of the specimen betatized at $800^{\circ}C$ and $900^{\circ}C$ were not linear.
The weld quality of end cap welds in Pressurized Heavy Water Reactor (PHWR) Fuel is extremely important for the fuel performance in the nuclear reactor. The quality of resistance upset welds is currently evaluated mainly by the metallographic examination although it reveals only two weld cross-sections in a circumference welds. This investigation was, firstly, carried out to determine whether the ultrasonic examination would be applied to detect weld defects in the end cap welds and, secondly, to measure the mechanical strength of upset butt welds as a function of phase shift percentage. The major results obtained in this study are as follows: 1. The weld current and amount of upset shrinkage linearly increased with increasing the phase shift percentage. 2. Above the phase shift 55%, the defects in the welds were completely eliminated with increasing the phase of sound weld was over the thickness of cladding tube. 3. The ultrasonic testing well detected such defects in the end cap welds as upset external crack, upset split, corner crack and irregular weld flash comparing with the results of metallography. 4. The micro-fissure in the corner of the end cap welds was reliably detected by ultrasonic testing. 5. The mechanical strength in the welds increased with increasing phase shift percentage but the fracture did't occur in the welds above 55%.

The effects of Si content on the variation of microstructure and processing window of austempered ductile cast iron were investigated. Four different Si contents between 2.42 and 3.37 wt.% were used. The influence of silicon on the microstructure and processing window of these materials were studied. Austenitizing was performed at $900^{\circ}C$ for 60min and austempering temperature were both $340^{\circ}C$ and $360^{\circ}C$ and austempering time were for 4min upto 119min and for 5min upto 160min respectively. After heat treatment, the evolution of stage I and stage II were performed by optical metallography, XRD, hardness test. The results showed that $t_2$ was delayed as Si contents was increased due to the fact that Si retarded the formation of cementite ($Fe_3C$). The high silicon content promoted the stability of the metastable two-phase combination of austenite and ausferrite.
The main objectives were to investigate the suitability of CaO crucible for melting TiAl alloys and to develop investment mold for investment casting of TiAl alloys. TiAl alloy specimen were prepared by plasma arc furnace under argon atmosphere. After melting of TiAl alloy using CaO crucible, the results showed that there is little contamination of oxygen in the TiAl bulk. Conventional vacuum induction furnaces can be readily adaptable to produce cast parts of TiAl without high skilled techniques. The determination of optical metallography and microhardness profiles in investment cast TiAl alloy rods has allowed the gradation of the relative thermal stability of the oxides examined. The molds used for the present study were $ZrO_2$, $Al_2O_3$, CaO stabilized $ZrO_2$ and $ZrSiO_4$. Even although high temperature of mold preheating, $Al_2O_3$ mold is a promising mold material for investment casting of TiAl alloys in terms of thermal stability, cost and handling strength. It is important to take thermal stability and preheating temperature of mold into consideration for investment casting of TiAl alloys.
This study describes a hydrogen embrittlement evaluation of the subsurface zone in 590DP steel by micro-Vickers hardness measurement. The 590DP steel was designed to use in high-strength thin steel sheets as automotive materials. The test specimens were fabricated to 5 series varying the chemical composition through the process of casting and rolling. Electrochemical hydrogen charging was conducted on each specimen with varying current densities and charging times. The relationship between the embrittlement and hydrogen charging conditions was established by investigating the metallography. The micro-Vickers hardness was measured to evaluate the hydrogen embrittlement of the subsurface zone in addition to the microscopic investigation. The micro-Vickers hardness increased with the charging time at the surface. However, the changing ratio and maximum variation of hardness with depth were nearly the same value for each test specimen under the current density of 150 mA/$cm^2$ and charging time of 50 hours. Consequently, it appears that hydrogen embrittlement in 590DP steel can be evaluated by micro-Vickers hardness measurement.
The hydrogen decrepitation behaviour of the $Sm_{2}Fe_{17} alloy containing 4at%Nb was examined by means of DTA and SEM metallography, and the magnetic properties of the alloy were studied by means of VSM or TMA. It has been found that a simple hydrogenation and degassing treatment for the alloy caused a poor hydrogen decrepitation. The cycle treatment consisting of repeated hydrogenation and degassing, however, caused a severe hydrogen decrepitation with a combination of intergranular and transgranular failure. The disproportionation temperature of the hydrogenated $Sm_{2}Fe_{17}-type alloy was enhanced significantly by small addition of Nb. It has also been found that the Curie temperature of $Sm_{2}Fe_{17} matrix phase in the Nb-containing alloy has been enhanced by the hydrogenation, and this was attributed to the increase in interatomic distance between the neighbouring iron atoms caused by the interstitial occupancy of the hydrogen atom into the $Sm_{2}Fe_{17}-type lattice. The magnetisation of the $Sm_{2}Fe_{17} alloy containing Nbwas found to be lower than that of the Nb-free alloy, and this was explained by the dilution effect due to the presence of the paramagnetic $Sm_{2}Fe_{17} phase.

The synergistic effect of ZrC nanoparticle pining and Re solution in W matrix on the thermal stability of tungsten was studied by investigating the evolution of the microstructure, hardness and tensile properties after annealing in a temperature range of 1000-1700 ℃. The results of metallography, electron backscatter diffraction pattern and Vickers micro-hardness indicate that the rolled W-1wt%Re-0.5 wt% ZrC alloy has a higher recrystallization temperature (1600 ℃-1700 ℃) than that of the rolled pure W (1200 ℃), W-0.5 wt%ZrC (1300 ℃), W-0.5 wt%HfC (1400-1500 ℃) and W-K-3wt%Re alloy fabricated by the same technology. The molecular dynamics simulation results indicated that solution Re atoms in W matrix can slow down the self-diffusion of W atoms and form dragging effect to delay the growth of W grain, moreover, the diffusion coefficient decrease with increasing Re content. In addition, the ZrC nanoparticles can pin the grain boundaries and dislocations effectively, preventing the recrystallization. Therefore, synergistic effect of solid solution Re element and dispersed ZrC nanoparticles significantly increase recrystallization temperature.
The objective of this study was to obtain a better understanding of the delayed hydride cracking (DHC) of Zr-2.5Nb alloy. The DHC model has some defects: first, it cannot explain why the DHC velocity (DHCV) becomes constant regardless of an applied stress intensity factor, even though the stress gradient is affected by the applied stress intensity factor at the notch tip. Second, it cannot explain why the DHCV has a strong dependence on the method of approaching the test temperature by a cool-down or a heating-up, even under the same stress gradient, and third, it cannot predict any hydride size effect on the DHC velocity. The DHC tests were conducted on Zr-2.5Nb compact tension specimens with the test temperatures reached by a heating-up method and a cool-down method. Crack velocities were measured in hydrided specimens, which were cooled from solution-treatment temperatures at different rates by being furnace-cooled, water-quenched, and liquid nitrogen-quenched. The resulting hydride size, morphology, and distributions were examined by optical metallography. It was found that fast cooling rates, which produce very finely dispersed hydrides, result in higher crack growth rates. This different DHC behavior of the Zr-2.5Nb tube with the cooling rate after a homogenization treatment is due to the precipitation of the $\gamma$-hydrides only in the water-quenched Zr-2.5Nb tube. This experiment will provide supporting evidence that the terminal solid solubility of a dissolution (TSSD) of $\gamma$-hydrides is higher than that of $\delta$-hydrides.
Grain morphology, phase stability and mechanical properties in binary Ti-Al alloys containing 43-52 mo1% Al have been investigated. Isothermal forging was used to control the grain sizes of these alloys in the range of 5 to $350{\mu}m$. Grain morphology and volume fraction of ${\alpha}_2$ phase were observed by optical metallography and scanning electron microscopy. Compressive properties were evaluated at room temperature, 1070 K, and 1270 K in an argon atmosphere. Work hardening is significant at room temperature, but it hardly took place at 1070 K and 1270 K because of dynamical recrystallization. The grain morphologies were determined as functions of aluminum content and processing conditions. The transus curve of ${\alpha}$ and ${\alpha}+{\gamma}$ shifted more to the aluminum-rich side than was the case in McCullough's phase diagram. Flow stress at room temperature depends strongly on the volume fraction of the ${\alpha}_2$ phase and the grain size, whereas flow stress at 1070 K is insensitive to the alloy composition or the grain size, and flow stress at 1270 K depends mainly on the grain size. The ${\alpha}_2$ phase in the alloys does not increase the proof stress at high temperatures. These observations indicate that improvement of both the proof stress at high temperature and the room temperature ductility should be achieved to obtain slightly Ti-rich TiAl base alloys.
