  • The measurement of specific gases is based on the reversible conductivity change of sensing materials in semiconductor type gas sensors. For an application as gas sensors of high sensitivity, porous $SnO_2$ films have been fabricated by anodizing of pure Sn foil in oxalic acid and characteristics of anodic tin oxide films have been investigated. Pore diameter and distribution were dependent on process conditions such as electrolyte concentration, applied voltage, anodizing temperature, and time. Characteristics of anodic films were explained with current density-time curves.

  • Hydrogenated amorphous silicon thin film transistors were fabricated on a flexible metal substrate. A negative voltage at a floated gate can be induced by a negative substrate bias through a capacitor between the substrate and gate electrode. This can recover the shifted-threshold voltage to an original value.

  • Low cost composite metallic membranes for the hydrogen separation and production have been prepared by using thin Pd-Ag foils reinforced by metallic (stainless steel and nickel) structures. Especially, “supported membranes” have been obtained by a diffusion welding procedure in which Pd-Ag thin foils have been joined with perforated metals (nickel) and expanded metals (stainless steel): in these membranes the thin palladium foil assures both the high hydrogen permeability and the perm-selectivity while the metallic support provides the mechanical strength. A second studied method of producing "laminated membranes" consists of coating non-noble metal sheets with very thin palladium layers by diffusion welding and cold-rolling. Palladium thin coatings over these metals reduce the activation energy of the hydrogen adsorption process and make them permeable to the hydrogen. In this case, the dense non-noble metal has been used as a support structure of the thin Pd-Ag layers coated over its surfaces: a proper thickness of the metal assures the mechanical strength, the absence of defects (cracks, micro-holes) and the complete hydrogen selectivity of the membrane. membrane.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate shear, tensile and shear/tensile combined bond strengths(SBS, TBS, S/TBS) in various orthodontic brackets bonded to human teeth with chemically cured adhesive (Ortho-one, Bisco, USA). Five types of metal brackets with various bracket base configurations (Micro-Loc base(Tomy, Japan), Chessboard base(Daesung, Korea), Non-Etched Foil Mesh base(Dentarum, Germany), Micro-Etched Foil Mesh base(Ortho Organiners, USA), Integral base(Unitek, USA)) were used in this study. Shear, tensile and shear/tensile combined bond strengths according to the direction of force were measured by universal testing machine. The bracket base surface after bond strength test were examined by stereoscope and scanning electron microscope. The assessment of resin remnant on bracket base surface was carried out by ARI(adhesive remnant index). The results obtained were summarized as follows, 1. In all brackets, SBS was in the greatest value(p<0.05), TBS was in 50% level and S/TBS was in 30% level of SBS. 2. In bond strength, Micro-Loc base bracket showed the maximum bond strength($SBS:22.86{\pm}1.37kgf,\;TBS:11.37{\pm}0.42kgf,\;S/TBS:6.69{\pm}0.34kgf$) and Integral base bracket showed the minimum bond strength($SBS:10.52{\pm}1.27kgf,\;TBS:4.27{\pm}1.08kgf,\;S/TBS:2.94{\pm}0.58kgf) (p<0.05). 3. In bond strength per unit area, Integral base bracket showed the minimum value, Micro-Loc base and Chessboard base brackets were in similar value(p>0.05). Non-Etched Foil Mesh base and Micro-Etched Foil Mesh base bracket were similar in SBS and TBS(p>0.05), but Micro-Etched Foil Mesh base bracket was greater than Non-Etched Foil Mesh base bracket in S/TBS(p<0.05). 4. Bond failure sites were mainly between bracket base and adhesive, therefore ARI scores were low.

  • The key development issues in the flexible displays are TFT backplane technology for their various applications, which requires competitive device performance as well as its low temperature process. In this paper, with shortly reviewing recent flexible display development status, we describe technical trends of low-temperature a-Si TFTs. Our TFTs show good device characteristics enough to apply LCD and electrophoretic display.

  • PURPOSE. The objective of this study was to evaluate fracture strength of collarless metal-ceramic FPDs according to their metal coping designs. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Four different facial margin design groups were investigated. Group A was a coping with a thin facial metal collar, group B was a collarless coping with its facial metal to the shoulder, group C was a collarless coping with its facial metal 1 mm short of the shoulder, and group D was a collarless coping with its facial metal 2 mm short of the shoulder. Fifteen 3-unit collarless metal-ceramic FPDs were fabricated in each group. Finished FPDs were cemented to PBT (Polybutylene terephthalate) dies with resin cement. The fracture strength test was carried out using universal testing machine (Instron 4465, Instron Co., Norwood MA, USA) at a cross head speed of 0.5 mm/min. Aluminum foil folded to about 1 mm of thickness was inserted between the plunger tip and the incisal edge of the pontic. Vertical load was applied until catastrophic porcelain fracture occurred. RESULTS. The greater the bulk of unsupported facial shoulder porcelain was, the lower the fracture strength became. However, there were no significant differences between experimental groups (P > .05). CONCLUSION. All groups of collarless metal-ceramic FPDs had higher fracture strength than maximum incisive biting force. Modified collarless metal-ceramic FPD can be an alternative to all-ceramic FPDs in clinical situations.

  • Folding endurance, bending fatigue and monotonic tensile tests of 4 kinds of Cu foil on flexible substrate was performed to investigate the relationship between folding or bending endurances and tensile characteristics. The repeated 5.3 or 2.0% strain was applied to Cu foil in folding endurance test or bending fatigue test while monitoring the electrical resistance. Elastic modulus, yield strength, ultimate tensile strength, ductility, and toughness were obtained by monotonic tensile test on the same samples. The Cu foil with higher toughness and ductility showed higher reliabilities in folding or bending fatigue. However, elastic modulus and yield strength did not show any relationship with folding and bending reliability. This is because the failures of Cu foil by folding or bending fatigue were closely related to the fracture energy of metal.

  • The present work is performed to photocatalytically reduce Cr(VI) by means of metal deposited anodized $TiO_2$ tubes, which are prepared by anodization of Ti foil followed by metal deposition. Stably immobilized photo-reactive materials are favored in the field of detoxification in a conventional aqueous medium, preventing gradual loss of efficiency and process malfunction due to detachment of the materials. The prepared samples are characterized by SEM, TEM, EDAX, and photocurrent. The metal deposited-$TiO_2$ electrode shows higher efficiency for Cr(VI) reduction (ca. 20%) and higher ability for adsorption (4~5 times) than pure one.
