A Study on the Combination Dyeing of Cationized Cotton Fabrics with Gardenia and Sappan Wood (카티온화 면직물의 치자와 소목에 의한 혼합염색에 관한 연구)

  • This study was carried out to investigate combination dyeing of the cationized cotton with natural colorants extracted from Gardenia and Sappan wood extract using methanol. To improve dyeing properties of cotton with natural dye, cotton fabric was preheated with cationizing agent containing chlorohydrine group in aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide. On the whole the various medium colors were developed by repeat dyeing with different colorants after dyeing with one colorant in case of natural dyeing, In this study, however in order to obtain various colors on cationized cotton fabrics with natural dyes, pre-mordanting and combination dyeing were carried out. The various colors were obtained according to various metal compounds for pre-mordants and various mixing portion of Gardenia and Sappan wood. Metal compounds containing alum, copper and iron were used for pre-mordants.

Dyeing Properties of Nylon 6 and Polyester Fabrics with Vat Dyes - Effect of Composition of Reducing Agent and Alkali on Color Change - (배트염료에 의한 나일론과 폴리에스테르 섬유의 염색성 - 색상 변화에 미치는 하이드로슬파이트와 NaOH의 영향 -)

  • Nylon 6 and polyester taffeta fabrics are dyed in aqueous medium with vat dyes such as Indanthren Red FBB, Mikethren Blue ACE and Mikethren Blue HR varying the compositions of sodium hydrosulfite and NaOH. Also nylon UMF nonwoven and polyester UMF knitted fabrics are dyed with metal complex and disperse dyes as a reference, and the wash and rubbing fastnesses for these dyes are investigated. In vat dyeing of polyester and nylon taffeta, an optimum composition of sodium hydrosulfite/NaOH is existed at a range of 1∼2wt%/0.2wt%. A good build-up property for Mikethren Blue ACE on nylon 6 UMF nonwoven fabric is shown at high temperature. Vat dyeing of polyester with Mikethren Blue Ace shows a good color shade in a higher temperature, while dyeing with Mitsui Blue HR shows low temperatures. Vat dyes In dyeing of both nylon 6 UMF nonwoven and polyester UMF knitted fabrics have a better wash fastnesses compared with metal complex or disperse dyes.

  • This study examined the change in the dyeability of natural dyes on cotton fabrics by a PEI (polyethyleneimine) pretreatment instead of mordants. Cotton fabrics were treated with PEI and the changes in the dyeability were shown by measuring the amount of PEI on cotton fabrics. Samples treated with PEI were dyed with two natural polychromatic dyes with a different affinity to cotton fibers: Alizarin Red S and Curcumin. The changes in dyeability by three variables (time, temperature and concentration of dyes) on cotton fabrics were analyzed by the K/S value to define optimum dyeing conditions. Subsequently, the PEI treatment improved the dyeability of cotton fabrics with both dyes of low and high affinity to cotton fibers. Thus, PEI could be a suitable heavy metal mordant replacement.

  • A grip impression is evidence of contact between the assailant and victim in a case. The shape of the grip impression can be analyzed to reconstruct which part of the palm it contacted. This study explored whether the grip impression left on cotton, nylon, and polyester fabrics can be identified by vacuum metal deposition (VMD). The latent grip impression developed by VMD had limitations in personal identification, but a new possibility was found that could be used as evidence for crime-scene reconstruction.

  • In this study, the possibility of the practical development of highly sensitive clothing textiles using fibrillated wool fibers were considered by determining the dyeability, the physical and mechanical properties of fibrillated wool fibers treated under strong acid and high temperature ultrasonic wave irradation and they were compared with those of untreated wool fibers. The color strengths of the dyed fibrillated wool fabrics increased by the acid metal complex dyes contrary to the untreated wool fabrics, and color fastness properties to rubbing, light, and dry cleaning were excellent, similar to those of the untreated wool fabrics. The tensile strengths of fibrillated wool fabrics were also kept after the dyeing. Moreover, the Numeri, Fukurami, and THV of the fibrillated wool fabrics were better than those of the untreated wool fabrics.

  • The purpose of this study is to establish the conservation methods of embroidered textiles and textile works. The conservation of remained textiles is consisting of examination, cleaning, support and consolidation, restoration, and storage and display process. It aims to prevent the damage on textile remains for long time display and storage and to prolong their aesthetics and functionality. The embroidered textiles and textiles works, which are remained by handed down or excavated or included in the Buddhist are embossed with colorful threads on the fabrics: the stitches include embroideries on clothing, bed clothes, wrapping clothes, utensil pouches, panels and Buddhist goods; textile works include hats, ornaments, shoes, attachments of clothes etc. These are composed of mainly fabrics, precious metals, leathers and precious stones, etc., and are fabricated by several techniques such as braiding, twining, sewing as well as weaving. Metal threads were also used to add a decorative effect on these goods. In order to conserve and preserve the remained goods, a special care must be taken on the metal threads, which are the most fragile material among the constituents. Hence, characteristics of metal threads and its cleaning methods, general conservation techniques of a rank badge, which is brocaded and partly attached to Cheogori and Samo(men's hat) from the excavated old tombs are introduced here.

  • In this report, nano-sized catalysts were introduced onto fabric surface to eliminate toxic chemicals assisted by physical adsorption. For chemical removal of toxic compounds, a series of zirconium-containing catalysts were synthesized and treated on fabric to catalyze the hydrolysis and oxidation of target molecules. Antimicrobial was also introduced for the research purpose to prove the compatibility of as-synthesized catalysts with other solutions. Zirconium ligated with hydroxyl group and MOF(Metal-Organic Frameworks) were exploited as catalyst for removal of toxic compounds, while zinc complex was used for an antimicrobial to culminate in a chemical shield. Once fabrics were functionalized, fabrics were washed 2 or 5 times for a washing durability test. The amount of catalyst in textile were measured by ICP-MS and weight increasing ratio of fabrics.

  • In this study we have examined Copper and Nickel double metal layer on the synthetic fabrics by electroless chemical plating. We have focused on the shielding effect of the four kinds of woven and none-woven structure against electromagnetic fields. The shielding effectiveness of Copper and Nickel double metal layer showed between 90dB and 70dB, which are closely related to the fabric structure, that is cover factor and density. The more dense, The better shielding effect.

Development of Auto-hydrolysis Method for Preparing Cotton Linter Regenerated Fibers of Textile Fabrics (방직용 재생펄프 제조를 위한 면 린터의 자기가수분해 공정 개발)

  • The molecular weight (MW) and crystallinity of cotton linter need to be controlled to be dissolved well in N-methylmorpholine N-oxide (NMMO) solvent for manufacturing regenerated fibers of clothing fabrics. Electron beam irradiation or sulfuric acid pre-treatment followed by alkaline peroxide bleaching has been used to control MW effectively and to improve brightness of cotton linter. Auto-hydrolysis of cotton linter without electron beam irradiation or chemical pre-treatment was found to be effective as an alternative pre-treatment method. Removal of metal ions, that hampered dissolution of cotton linter by NMMO, was also investigated when the auto-hydrolysis was accompanied with ionic polymers and chelating agent.

Effects of Mordanting, Dyeing, Rinsing, and Fiber Characteristics on the Air-permeability and Color of Fabrics Dyed using Cochineal Dyestuff

  • Based on the previous study, three types at synthetic fibers comprising nylon, PET, and acrylic fibers were investigated in this study. The effect at mordanting on the air-permeability and dyeing properties at fabrics was investigated. The effect at rinsing process on the air-permeability and color was quantitatively investigated by rinsing the mordanted fabric specimens 1$\sim$3 times after mordanting. The air-permeability changed peculiarly according to the characteristics of the tiber materials after mordanting. The air-permeability values of nylon and acrylic fabric specimens dropped significantly after mordanting. On the other hand, those of PET fabric specimens hardly changed after mordanting. The metal ions absorbed on the fibers of nylon and acrylic fabrics did not show the mordanting effect. Regardless of mordanting, cochineal dyestuff made direct links with the molecular chains in nylon fabrics exhibiting dark colors. After dyeing acrylic fabrics, the color did not develop at all, even though partial components of the cochineal dyestuff were absorbed apparently.
