  • The static strength and fatigue crack resistance of the aircraft skin structures depend on the materials used and joint type. Most of the commercial aircraft's skin panel structures are made from aluminium alloy and carbon fibre reinforced epoxy. In this study, the fatigue resistance of four joint configurations (metal/metal, metal/composite, composite/composite and composite/metal) with riveted, adhesive bonded, and hybrid joining techniques are investigated with experiments and finite element analysis. The fatigue tests were tension-tension because of the typical nature of the loads on aircraft skin panels susceptible of experimenting fatigue. Experiment results suggest that the fatigue life of hybrid joints is superior to adhesive bonded joints, and these in turn much better than conventional riveted joints. Thanks to the fact that, for hybrid joints, the adhesive bond provides better load distribution and ensures load-carrying capacity in the event of premature adhesive failure while rivets induce compressive residual stresses in the joint. Results from FE tool ABAQUS analysis for adhesive bonded and hybrid joints agrees with the experiments. From the analysis, the energy release rate for adhesive bonded joints is higher than that of hybrid joints in both opening (mode I) and shear direction (mode II). Most joints show higher energy release rate in mode II. This indicates that the joints experience fatigue crack in the shear direction, which is responsible for crack opening.

  • This article has been investigated the use of FFT for adhesive joints analysis between metal sheets. The method is based on the measurement of the reflection wave at the metal/adhesive interface. After describing briefly the physical aspects of the phenomenon, an index is defined to detect defective zone of the joint(both for the lack of adhesive and for insufficient adhesion): the influence of the experimental variables(variable stress...) on the measurement is discussed. By means of a control experiment it is shown that stress variation in adhesive joints are separate to be distinguished. In this paper, Nondestructive evaluation in adhesive joints are evaluated together with ultrasonic testing and finite element analysis.

  • The adhesive bonding technique has become widely prevalent in recent years, especially in fields such as engineering, aerospace, and sports. During operational service, adhesives are subjected to severe environmental conditions, including temperature variations, humidity, and UV radiation, which can impact their performance. In this study, we utilized the mechanical properties of the aged epoxy adhesive Adekit A140 in a finite element model to assess the impact of temperature and water absorption on the degradation of mechanical properties in metal-metal adhesive joints used in aeronautical structures. Our primary objective was to analyze, using the finite element method, the influence of these environmental factors on the joint's strength by evaluating the distribution of Von Mises stresses. The adhesive's mechanical properties, such as Young's modulus (E), were measured at different immersion periods and then integrated into the numerical modeling. The results revealed that water absorption leads to a significant degradation of the adhesive's mechanical properties, primarily manifested as a reduction in Young's modulus. Despite this degradation, an increase in plasticity was observed, which surprisingly improved the overall strength of the bonded assembly under certain conditions. Notably, after 90 days of immersion, the joint's strength demonstrated a 15% reduction in stiffness but exhibited enhanced durability due to plastic deformation, indicating a potential tradeoff between stiffness and durability in long-term service. This provides valuable insight into the design of adhesive joints under varying environmental conditions.

  • Recently, the uses of Ceramic/metal bonded joints, resin/metal joints, adhesive joints, composite materials which are composed of dissimiliar materials have increased in various industry fields. Since the ceramic/metal bonded joints material is made at a high temperature, residual stress distributions due to differences in material properties were investigated by varying material parameters. The two dimensional finite element analysis was performed to study residual stress distribution in Si3N4/SM45C bonded joint with a copper interlayer between the silicon nitride(Si3N4) and the structural carbon steel(SM45C) and 4-point bending tests were carried out under room temperature. Fracture surface and crack propagation path were observed using scanning electron microscope and characteristics of its fracture was discussed.

  • Application of bonding by adhesives can be found in many industries, particularly in advanced technological domains such as aeronautical and space, automobile and electronics industries. Periodic inspection with conventional ultrasonic NDE techniques is capable of indicating the presence and possible location of crack. Continuous ultrasonic attenuation monitoring has potential to supply information. This article discusses the use of pulse-echo ultrasonic testing for the inspection of adhesive bonds between metal sheets. The method is based on the measurement of the reflection coefficient at the metal/adhesive interface. By means of a control experiment it is shown that Quantitative Nondestructive Evaluation in Adhesive Joints are evaluated together with Ultrasonic Testing and Fracture Testing.

  • The strength of aluminum 7075 and carbon composite hybrid joints was studied for adhesive, bolt, and the adhesive-bolt combined joints. Several hybrid joint specimens were tested to get the failure load and modes for three types of the joints. Adhesive Cytec EA9394S was used for aluminum and carbon bonding. Failure load of the adhesive-bolt combined joint was 94 % of the sum of the failure load of the separately bonded and bolted joints. Hybrid joint also showed more stable failure behavior than the simple adhesive or bolted joint.

  • Adhesive bonding is becoming one of the popular joining techniques in metal industries, since it has some advantages over other techniques such as welding and diffusion bonding, e.g., any dissimilar metals are easily adhesive-bonded together. In this study, the experiments were carried out in order to provide the statistical data with strength evaluation methods: tension, shear and four-point bending tests for thermoplastic epoxy resin based adhesive-bonded metal joints. We should certificate on the probability of the adhesive strength that has the tendency of brittle fracture, the adhesive bonding strength between metals with thermoplastic adhesive has the best probability at four-point bending test. The strength testing method that has higher probability is four-point bending test, shear test and tensile test in order.

  • The use of light-weight Al alloys in the automotive industry is increasing to meet requirements for fuel efficiency and emission reduction. Joining Al alloy to the conventional steel sheet is also very important issue with the increased use of Al alloy, and several joining processes have been introduced to enhance joining strength between dissimilar metals. This paper deals with a galvanic corrosion in the dissimilar metal joining. Salt spray tests up to 2000 hours were conducted on a self-piercing rivet, spot welded, adhesive bonded and weld-bonded joints, and cross-sections and tensile shear strength according the salt spray duration were analyzed at every 500-hour. Self-piercing rivet joint had relative low initial strength but the joint strength did not change regardless of the salt spray duration. The strength of other joints (spot welded, adhesive bonded and weld-bonded joints) decreased with the increase of salt spray duration and the corrosion behaviour of each joint was discussed.
