A Construction Plan of Media Big Data Platform Through the Smart Media Meta-data Utilization (스마트 미디어 메타데이터 활용을 통한 미디어 빅데이터 플랫폼 구축 방안)

  • Media is a means for exchanging one's emotions or objective information in human society. Due to the spread of smart media due to the advent of digital media, media in modern society is not a simple means but encompasses the entire society in which humans live. It even took over the control function. Therefore, by examining the types and characteristics of media according to the service platform in which smart media is used, and building a big data hub for media based on this, new development and research directions for digital media can be explored. In this paper, we analyze various metadata generated through smart media and propose a plan for building a big data platform using it.

Event diagnosis method for a nuclear power plant using meta-learning

  • Artificial intelligence (AI) techniques are now being considered in the nuclear field, but application faces with the lack of actual plant data. For this reason, most previous studies on AI applications in nuclear power plants (NPPs) have relied on simulators or thermal-hydraulic codes to mimic the plants. However, it remains uncertain whether an AI model trained using a simulator can properly work in an actual NPP. To address this issue, this study suggests the use of metadata, which can give information about parameter trends. Referred to here as robust AI, this concept started with the idea that although the absolute value of a plant parameter differs between a simulator and actual NPP, the parameter trend is identical under the same scenario. Based on the proposed robust AI, this study designs an event diagnosis algorithm to classify abnormal and emergency scenarios in NPPs using prototypical learning. The algorithm was trained using a simulator referencing a Westinghouse 990 MWe reactor and then tested in different environments in Advanced Power Reactor 1400 MWe simulators. The algorithm demonstrated robustness with 100 % diagnostic accuracy (117 out of 117 scenarios). This indicates the potential of the robust AI-based algorithm to be used in actual plants.

  • The reductions of troops/human resources, and improvement in combat power have made Korean Department of Defense actively adapt 4th Industrial Revolution technology (Artificial Intelligence, Big Data). The defense information system has been developed in various ways according to the task and the uniqueness of each military. In order to take full advantage of the 4th Industrial Revolution technology, it is necessary to improve the closed defense datamanagement system.However, the establishment and usage of data standards in all information systems for the utilization of defense big data and artificial intelligence has limitations due to security issues, business characteristics of each military, anddifficulty in standardizing large-scale systems. Based on the interworking requirements of each system, data sharing is limited through direct linkage through interoperability agreement between systems. In order to implement smart defense using the 4th Industrial Revolution technology, it is urgent to prepare a system that can share defense data and make good use of it. To technically support the defense, it is critical to develop Multi Repository Meta-Data Management (MRMM) that supports systematic standard management of defense data that manages enterprise standard and standard mapping for each system and promotes data interoperability through linkage between standards which obeys the Defense Interoperability Management Development Guidelines. We introduced MRMM, and implemented by using vocabulary similarity using machine learning and statistical approach. Based on MRMM, We expect to simplify the standardization integration of all military databases using artificial intelligence and bigdata. This will lead to huge reduction of defense budget while increasing combat power for implementing smart defense.

A Study on Improving the Direction of Moving Image Material Descriptions (영상기록물 기술의 개선 방향 연구)

  • Since the year 2000, the need for an improvement of archival descriptions has been an increasing issue, due to the growing usage and amount of archival materials. Unlike the development of descriptions for paper records, however, the technological development and research for moving image descriptions has been limited due to its diversity and specificity. This research investigated the current status and the specificity of the moving image descriptions and also examined major international archival description cases. In-depth interviews with archival professionals were also conducted. Based on the findings, this study suggested the need for redefinition of and continuous research on the fundamental values of moving image information, moving image description and management based on digilog view points, the development of user-centric description and search aides, the creation of moving image values using a relevant information management system, and the improvement of moving image description elements throughout the life-cycle of the material.

Extraction method of spatial relation by analyzing location tag in folksonomy (폭소노미에서 위치태그 분석을 통한 공간관계 추출 기법)

  • As the semantic web receives higher concern with an intensified necessity in these days, the research on the ontology as its core technology has been carried out in various fields. The ontology has been adopted as an alternative to work out lots of problematic issues resulted from the insufficient vocabulary selection rules in folksonomy, widely accepted under Web 2.0. Therefore the importance of research to complementarily consolidate the two disciplines, the folksonomy and the ontology, has been increased. Based on this idea this research proposes a system, which pulls out, using open services, the location information tags from folksonomy-based metadata, ultimately extracts, following location information analyses, spatial relationships among tags, and in turn automatically constructs self-correcting location information domain ontology. The system devised in this study will associate data derived from easily accessible folksonomy with meaningful and technological information from ontology.

Designing the Participatory Archive Portal for Classical Music Performance Information in Korea (국내 클래식 음악 공연 정보의 참여형 아카이브 포털 기능 설계)

  • The research on the archiving performing arts has recently been conducted on various aspects in Korea, but there has been no research or attempts to build a digital archive that can systematically identify the information on classical music performances in one place and get the past performance information. In this study, we proposed a participatory archive portal for providing, preserving and servicing information on all classical music performances, and tried to design the functions based on the requirements of the performance archive portal identified in previous research. We identified and proposed functional requirements of the portal, reorganized the characteristics of classical music performance information, and designed metadata elements. Then we presented the design and implementation direction of search and facet navigation, as well as user participation and communication functions. Lastly, we developed a prototype that implemented the requirements of the interface.

Reliability of microarray analysis for studying periodontitis: low consistency in 2 periodontitis cohort data sets from different platforms and an integrative meta-analysis

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to compare the characteristic expression patterns of advanced periodontitis in 2 cohort data sets analyzed using different microarray platforms, and to identify differentially expressed genes (DEGs) through a meta-analysis of both data sets. Methods: Twenty-two patients for cohort 1 and 40 patients for cohort 2 were recruited with the same inclusion criteria. The 2 cohort groups were analyzed using different platforms: Illumina and Agilent. A meta-analysis was performed to increase reliability by removing statistical differences between platforms. An integrative meta-analysis based on an empirical Bayesian methodology (ComBat) was conducted. DEGs for the integrated data sets were identified using the limma package to adjust for age, sex, and platform and compared with the results for cohorts 1 and 2. Clustering and pathway analyses were also performed. Results: This study detected 557 and 246 DEGs in cohorts 1 and 2, respectively, with 146 and 42 significantly enriched gene ontology (GO) terms. Overlapping between cohorts 1 and 2 was present in 59 DEGs and 18 GO terms. However, only 6 genes from the top 30 enriched DEGs overlapped, and there were no overlapping GO terms in the top 30 enriched pathways. The integrative meta-analysis detected 34 DEGs, of which 10 overlapped in all the integrated data sets of cohorts 1 and 2. Conclusions: The characteristic expression pattern differed between periodontitis and the healthy periodontium, but the consistency between the data sets from different cohorts and metadata was too low to suggest specific biomarkers for identifying periodontitis.

  • With the increase of data and the development of AI technology, the strategies and policies related to integrated data are being actively established to increase the usability of data all over the world. Recently, in the research field, infrastructure projects and management systems are being prepared to utilize research data at the initiative of the government. Also, in Korea, platforms for searching and sharing research data are being actively developed. The National Disaster Management Research Institute (NDMI) has been conducting extensive research on disaster & safety as a national institute, but data-oriented management and utilization are insufficient. Because it still lacks consistent data management systems, metadata for outcomes of research, experts on data and policies for utilization of data to research. In order to move to the data-based research paradigm, we defined the master plans and verified a target model for the integrated management and utilization of disaster & safety research data. In this study, we found out the need to establish differentiated data governance, such as data standardization and unification of the data management system, and dedicated organization for managing data, based on the necessity and actual demands of NDMI. In order to verify the effectiveness of the target model reflecting the derived implications, we intend to establish a pilot mode. In the future, major improvement measures to establish a disaster & safety research data management system will be implement.

A Study on Research Data Creation and Management by Researchers in Mechanical Engineering (기계공학분야 연구자들의 연구데이터 생산과 관리에 관한 연구)

  • This study aimed to examine the perception and experience of researchers in the field of mechanical engineering on research data creation and management, and suggest implications for research data management and services in the field. Research data management and services of domestic and foreign research institutes were investigated, and in-depth interviews were conducted with researchers belonging to domestic mechanical engineering research institutes to analyze the perception and conduction of research data creation and management according to four major categories: "research data, accountable conducting of research and compliance with research ethics, utility and effectiveness of research data management, and the value of sharing research data." To ensure effective research data management and services in mechanical engineering, it is necessary to conduct a data investigation on the process, type, and form of production to collect explicit metadata and implicit contextual information. It is also necessary to propose a plan to recognize research results using the publication of data journals and to prepare infrastructure such as a cloud-based system that supports safe data management and communication between researchers. In addition, it suggests that it is important for various officials in the research field to allocate roles and responsibilities for research data management and services at the organizational level.

Mass spectrometry-based ginsenoside profiling: Recent applications, limitations, and perspectives

  • Ginseng, the roots of Panax species, is an important medicinal herb used as a tonic. As ginsenosides are key bioactive components of ginseng, holistic chemical profiling of them has provided many insights into understanding ginseng. Mass spectrometry has been a major methodology for profiling, which has been applied to realize numerous goals in ginseng research, such as the discrimination of different species, geographical origins, and ages, and the monitoring of processing and biotransformation. This review summarizes the various applications of ginsenoside profiling in ginseng research over the last three decades that have contributed to expanding our understanding of ginseng. However, we also note that most of the studies overlooked a crucial factor that influences the levels of ginsenosides: genetic variation. To highlight the effects of genetic variation on the chemical contents, we present our results of untargeted and targeted ginsenoside profiling of different genotypes cultivated under identical conditions, in addition to data regarding genome-level genetic diversity. Additionally, we analyze the other limitations of previous studies, such as imperfect variable control, deficient metadata, and lack of additional effort to validate causation. We conclude that the values of ginsenoside profiling studies can be enhanced by overcoming such limitations, as well as by integrating with other -omics techniques.
