The incorporation of cobalt into mesoporous molecular sieves MCM-41 and MCM-48 was carried out. Co-PO/MCM41 and Co-PO/MCM48 were prepared using Co(II) acetate solution adjusted to pH = 3.0 with phosphoric acid by the incipient wetness method. Photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS) was used to study the local environments of Co(II) incorporated into mesopores. The band around 500 nm in PAS of as-prepared Co-PO/MCM41 and Co-PO/MCM48 with Co(II) acetate solution was changed to triplet bands around 600 nm. This could be assigned to the 4 A2(F)-> 4T1(P) transition of Co(II) surrounded tetrahedrally by oxygen ions after calcination. It may be attributable to that the octahedral cobalt species containing phosphate ligands in coordination sphere reacting with framework's silanol groups to be dispersed atomically onto the surface of mesoporous molecular sieves as a tetrahedral species. This is unlike that the Co in Co-Cl/MCM41 and direct-synthesized Co-MCM41 transforms to Co oxide phase upon calcination. Co-PO/MCM41 and Co-PO/MCM48 were stable while treated with water.
Relatively inert surface of microcrystalline MgO was modified into chemically active one by carrying out controlled hydration followed by dehydration at elevated temperature under dynamic vacuum. Even though the treatment by the first cycle of hydration-dehydration did not alter the porosity of MgO, it largely enhanced surface reactivity of the MgO toward adsorbed water, turning its outer layer into brucite upon rehydration. Treatment by the second cycle of hydration-dehydration generated micropores, and slit-shaped mesopores, raising the porosity of the MgO. The overlayer of Fe2O3 of the core/shell type composite magnesium oxide enhanced this surface modification, turning its surface into more porous and more active one than that of uncoated MgO, after the treatment by the hydration-dehydration.
Porous silica-pillared montmorillonites were prepared by simultaneous intercalation of dodecylamine-TEOS [tetraethylorthosilicate, Si(OC2H5)4] into the H-montmorillonite and intragallery amine-catalyzed hydrolysis of TEOS. Mixtures of the H-montmorillonite, dodecylamine and TEOS at molar ratios of 1 : 2 : 15-30 and 1 : 2-6 : 20 resulted to swollen and viscous gel once at room temperature, allowing intercalation compounds which dodecylamine and TEOS were simultaneously intercalated into interlayer of H-montmorillonite. The hydrolysis of the gallery TEOS was conducted in water solution for 40 min at room temperature, affording siloxane-pillared H-montmorillonite. Calcination of samples at 500 $^{\circ}C$ in air resulted in silica-pillared montmorillonite with large specific surface areas between 403 and 577 m2 /g, depending on the reaction stoichiometry. The reaction at H-montmorillonite : dodecylamine : TEOS reaction stoichiometries of 1 : 2 : 15 and 1 : 4 : 20 resulted in high specific surface areas and mesopores with a narrow pore size distribution. Result indicates that the intragallery-amine catalyze the hydrolysis of gallery-TEOS and simultaneously have a role of gallery-templated micellar assemblies.

To produce activated carbon fibers, the process is carried out through either physical activation method or chemical activation method. In this study, we present the results regarding the characteristics of activated carbon fibers manufactured under various conditions through the quantitative control of steam. The yield after activation indicates a decreasing trend with the increase in steam quantity and activation time. Additionally, specific surface area characteristics exhibit variations based on activation time and steam flow rate. The SEM analysis results reveal that higher steam flow rates lead to the presence of both mesopores and macropores on the surface of activated carbon fibers (ACF).

The objective of this study is to develop a platinum/hexaaluminate pellet catalyst for the decomposition of eco-friendly liquid propellant. Pellet catalysts using hexaaluminate prepared by ultrasonic spray pyrolysis as a support and platinum as an active metal were prepared by two methods. In the case of the pellet catalyst formed by loading the platinum precursor onto the hexaaluminate powder and then adding the binder (M1 method catalyst), the mesopores were well developed in the catalyst after calcination at $550^{\circ}C$. However, when this catalyst was calcined at $1,200^{\circ}C$, the mesopores almost collapsed and only a few macropores existed. On the other hand, in the case of a catalyst in which platinum was supported on pellets after the pellet was produced by extrusion of hexaaluminate (M2 method catalyst), the surface area and the mesopores were well maintained even after calcination at $1,200^{\circ}C$. Also, the catalyst prepared by the M2 method showed better heat resistance in terms of platinum dispersion. The effects of preparation method and calcination temperature of Pt/hexaaluminate pellet catalysts on the decomposition of liquid propellant composed mainly of ammonium dinitramide (ADN) or hydroxyl ammonium nitrate (HAN) were investigated. It was confirmed that the decomposition onset temperature during the decomposition of ADN- or HAN- based liquid propellant could be reduced significantly by using Pt/hexaaluminate pellet catalysts. Especially, in the case of the catalyst prepared by the M2 method, the decomposition onset temperature did not show a large change even when the calcination temperature was raised at $1,200^{\circ}C$. Therefore, it was confirmed that Pt/ hexaaluminate pellet catalyst prepared by M2 method has heat resistance and potential as a catalyst for the decomposition of the eco-friendly liquid propellants.
Spray pyrolysis was applied to prepare spherical silica particles with mesopores of a regular structure. The physical properties such as surface area, pore size, pore structure, particle size, and morphology were studied by BET, SEM, SAXS, and DLS analysis. At a fixed gas flow rate, the BET surface area changed from 200 to $1,290m^2/g$ as changing the CTAB/TEOS molar ratio from 0.05 to 0.3. At a fixed CTAB/TEOS ratio, the surface area of silica particles was varied from 1,062 to $1,305m^2/g$ with changing the gas flow rate from 10 to 40 l/min. The average pore size measured by BJH desorption was about $21{\sim}23{\AA}$ and not significantly influenced by the CTAB/TEOS ratio and the gas flow rate. Finally, the highest surface area which was $1,305m^2/g$ were obtained when the CTAB/TEOS ratio and the gas flow rate were 0.2 and 20 l/min, respectively. According to SAXS analysis, the prepared silica particles showed a strong peak at $2{\theta}=2.6^{\circ}$ and two minor peaks around $2{\theta}=4.4^{\circ}$ and $5.1^{\circ}$, which are due to regular mesopores of hexagonal structure. The morphology of silica particles prepared were spherical shape and the average particle size was $1.0{\mu}m$.
In order to address many issues associated with large volume changes of silicon, which has very low electrical conductivity but offers about 10 times higher theoretical capacity than graphite (Gr), a silicon nanoparticles/hollow carbon (SiNP/HC) composite having bimodal-mesopores was prepared using silica nanoparticles as a template. A control SiNP/C composite without a hollow structure was also prepared for comparison. The physico-chemical and electrochemical properties of SiNP/HC were analyzed by X-ray diffractometry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, nitrogen adsorption/desorption measurements for surface area and pore size distribution, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, galvanostatic cycling, and cyclic voltammetry tests to compare them with those of the SiNP/C composite. The SiNP/HC composite showed significantly better cycle life and efficiency than the SiNP/C, with minimal increase in electrode thickness after long cycles. A hybrid composite, SiNP/HC@Gr, prepared by physical mixing of the SiNP/HC and Gr at a 50:50 weight ratio, exhibited even better cycle life and efficiency than the SiNP/HC at low capacity. Thus, silicon/carbon composites designed to have hollow spaces capable of accommodating volume expansion were found to be highly effective for long cycle life of silicon-based composites. However, further study is required to improve the low initial coulombic efficiency of SiNP/HC and SiNP/HC@Gr, which is possibly because of their high surface area causing excessive electrolyte decomposition for the formation of solid-electrolyte-interface layers.

The objective of this study is to investigate the applicability of a Cu-supported honeycomb catalyst as a catalyst for decomposition of a low toxic liquid propellant based on ammonium dinitramide (ADN). A mixture of copper, lanthanum, and alumina was supported on the honeycomb support by wash coating to prepare a Cu-La-Al/honeycomb catalyst. We elucidated that the effect of metal loading on the physicochemical properties of Cu-La-Al/honeycomb catalyst and catalytic performance in decomposition of the ADN-based liquid propellant. As the number of wash coatings increased, the amount of active metal Cu was increased to 4.1 wt%. The BET surface area of the Cu-La-Al/honeycomb catalyst was in the range of 3.1~4.1 ㎡/g. The micropores were hardly present in Cu-La-Al/honeycomb catalysts, however, the mesopores and macropores were well developed. The Cu (2.7 wt%)-La-Al/honeycomb catalyst exhibited the highest activity in the decomposition of the ADN-based liquid propellant, which is attributed to the largest surface area, the largest pore volume, and the well-developed mesopores and macropores.
To improve $CO_2$pemselectivity, a modified silica membrane was prepared by chemical vapor deposition with tetraethoxysilane(TEOS)-ethanol-water, and TEOS-ethanol-water-HCI solution at 300-$600^{\circ}C$. The silica was effectively deposited in the mesopores of a ${\gamma}$-alumina film coated on a porous $\alpha$-alumina tube by evacuating the reactants through the porous wall. In this membrane, $CO_2$interacts, to some extent, with the pore wall, and $CO_2$/$N_2$selectivity then exceeds the value of the Knudsen diffusion mechanism, while the membrane derived from TEOS alone has no $CO_2$selectivity. The silica membrane prepared from TEOS-ethanol-water-HCI solution showed that $CO_2$permeance was $2.5$\times$10^{-7}mol/s^{-1}.m^{-2}.Pa^{-1} at 30{\circ}C$ and $CO_2$/$N_2$selectivity was approximately 3. The $CO_2$permeance and selectivity was improved by enlarging the surface diffusion with modification of chemical affinity of the silica pores.

Mesoporous nickel intercalated aluminosilicate nanohybrid has been synthesized through a recombination reaction between the colloidal suspension of exfoliated montmorillonite nanosheets and aqueous nickel acetate solution. According to powder X-ray diffraction and field emission-scanning electron microscopic analyses, the intercalation of nickel species expands significantly the basal spacing of the host montmorillonite clay and the crystallites of the intercalation compound are assembled to form a house-of-card structure. $N_2$ adsorption-desorption isotherm measurements with BJH pore analyses clearly demonstrated that the porosity of the intercalate originates mainly from mesopores (diameter $\sim50\;\AA$) formed by the house-of-card type stacking of clay crystallites. From FT-IR and X-ray absorption spectroscopic analyses, it becomes certain that intercalated nickel ion is stabilized in an isolated $NiO_6$ octahedral unit. The present mesoporous intercalation compound is expected to be applicable as efficient catalysts or absorbents.
