  • This paper focuses on the mesh-size dependency in numerical simulations of reinforced concrete (RC) structures subjected to blast loading. A tensile failure criterion that can minimize the mesh-dependency of simulation results is introduced based on the fracture energy theory. In addition, conventional plasticity based damage models for concrete such as the CSC model and the HJC model, which are widely used for blast analyses of concrete structures, are compared with the orthotropic model that adopts the introduced tensile failure criterion in blast tests to verify the proposed criterion. The numerical predictions of the time-displacement relations at the mid-span of RC beams subjected to blast loading are compared with experimental results. The analytical results show that the numerical error according to the change in the finite element mesh size is substantially reduced and the accuracy of the numerical results is improved by applying a unique failure strain value determined by the proposed criterion.

  • In this paper, an automatic adaptive mesh refinement procedure is presented for two-dimensional problems on the basis of a new probabilistic error estimator. First-order perturbation theory is employed to determine the lower and upper bounds of the structural displacements and stresses considering uncertainties in geometric sizes, material properties and loading conditions. A new probabilistic error estimator is proposed to reduce the mesh dependency of the responses dispersion. The suggested error estimator neglects the refinement at the critical points with stress concentration. Therefore, the proposed strategy is combined with the classic adaptive mesh refinement to achieve an optimal mesh refined properly in regions with either high gradients or high dispersion of the responses. Several numerical examples are illustrated to demonstrate the efficiency, accuracy and robustness of the proposed computational algorithm and the results are compared with the classic adaptive mesh refinement strategy described in the literature.

  • A regularization method based on the Duvaut-Lions viscoplastic scheme for plastic-damage and continuum damage models, which provides mesh-independent and well-posed solutions in nonlinear earthquake analysis of concrete dams, is presented. A plastic-damage model regularized using the proposed rate-dependent viscosity method and its original rate-independent version are used for the earthquake damage analysis of a concrete dam to analyze the effect of the regualarization and mesh. The computational analysis shows that the regularized plastic-damage model gives well-posed solutions regardless mesh size and arrangement, while the rate-independent counterpart produces mesh-dependent ill-posed results.

  • In the context of an increasing need for safety in concrete structures under blast and impact loading condition, the behavior of concrete under high strain rate condition has been an important issue. Since concrete subjected to impact loading associated with high strain rate shows quite different material behavior from that in the static state, several material models are proposed and used to describe the high strain rate behavior under blast and impact loading. In the process of modelling high strain rate conditions with these material models, mesh dependency in the used finite element(FE) is the key problem because simulation results under high strain-rate condition are quite sensitive to applied FE mesh size. This paper introduces an criterion which can minimize the mesh-dependency of simulation results on the basis of the fracture energy concept, and HJC(Holmquist Johnson Cook) model is examined to trace sensitivity to the used FE mesh size. To coincide with the purpose of the perforation simulation with a concrete plate under a projectile(bullet), the residual velocities of projectile after perforation are compared. The analytical results show that the variation of residual velocity with the used FE mesh size is quite reduced and accuracy of simulation results are improved by applying a unique failure strain value determined according to the proposed criterion.

  • In this paper, we have derived a continuum-based adjoint design sensitivity of general performance functionals with respect to Young' modulus and heat conduction coefficient for steady-state nonlinear thermoelastic problems. An adjoint equation for temperature and displacement fields is defined for the efficient computation of the coupled field design sensitivity. Through numerical examples, we investigated the mesh dependency of the topology optimization method in the thermoelastic problems. Also, comparing the dominant loading cases of thermal and mechanical ones, the loading dependency of topology design optimization in coupled multi-physics problems is investigated.

  • The view dependency of typical spatial-partitioning based NC simulation methods is overcome by polygon rendering technique that generates polygons to represent the workpiece, thus enabling dynamic viewing transformations without reconstruction of the entire data structure. However, the polygon rendering technique still has difficulty in realizing real-time simulation due to unsatisfactory performance of current graphics devices. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a mesh decimation method that enables rapid rendering without loss of display quality. In this paper. we proposed a new mesh decimation algorithm thor a workpiece whose shape varies dynamically. In this algorithm, the 2-map data thor a given workpiece is divided into several regions, and a triangular mesh is constructed for each region first. Then, if any region it cut by the tool, its mesh is regenerated and decimated again. Since the range of mesh decimation is confined to a few regions, the reduced polygons for rendering can be obtained rapidly. Our method enables the polygon-rendering based NC simulation to be applied to the computers equipped with a wider range of graphics cards.

  • In this paper, an Extended Finite Element Method is proposed by adding discontinuity and singularity enrichment functions to the standard FEM approximation. In this method, the singularity and the discontinuity of the crack are efficiently modeled by using initial regular mesh without refining mesh near the crack tip, so that it enables express the asymptotic stress field near crack tip and crack surface successfully. The developed method was verified by evaluating crack tip stress profile and stress intensity factor of mode Ⅰ/mode Ⅱ fracture problems and the results showed the effectiveness and robustness for fracture problem.

  • Previously, an improved crack analysis technique based on Element-Free Galerkin Method (EFGM) which includes a discontinuity function and a singular basis function was presented. The technique needs neither addition of nodes nor modification of the model, but it shows some dependency on the formulation and modeling parameters such as the class of weight function, the size of compact support, dilation parameter and the range controlled by the singular basis function. For those parameters, a parametric study was performed on the calculation of a discrete error and then, a guideline for the choice of adequate parameters in the technique was proposed.
