  • Hydrostatic bearings are widely used in precision machines due to their high motion guide accuracy, low friction and high load carrying capacity. It is very useful to estimate the moving characteristics of hydrostatic bearings in the design stage. A new method is suggested for the analysis of fluid film in hydrostatic bearings. A combined mesh of 8 node solid elements with negligible deformation resistance and spring-dashpot elements is used in conjunction with the user subroutine of ABAQUS to represent the fluid film. The mesh can be used to capture the deformation of the bearing structure as well as the varying properties of fluid film. Analysis results from the finite element model are compared with theoretical solutions, results from FLUENT analysis and some previous works. With this method, static and dynamic analyses of the system containing the bearings can be performed efficiently.

  • A material cloud method, which is a new topology optimization method, is presented. In MCM, an optimal structure can be found out by manipulating sizes and positions of material clouds, which are lumps of material with specified properties. A numerical analysis for a specific distribution of material clouds is carried out using fixed background finite element mesh. Optimal material distribution can be element-wisely extracted from material clouds' distribution. In MCM, an expansion-reduction procedure of design domain for finding out better optimal solution can be naturally realized. Also the convergence of material distribution is faster and well-defined material distribution with fewer intermediate densities can be obtained. In addition, the control of minimum-member sizes in the material distribution can be realized to some extent. In this paper, basic concept of MCM is introduced, and formulation and optimization results of MCM are compared with those of the traditional density distribution method(DDM).

  • Economical use of larix (larch) boards (grade 3) in industries is lower than that of imported hardwood; thus, studies have been conducted toward performance improvement of larix boards. Herein, flexural modulus of larix board samples laminated with wood adhesives polyurethane resins, poly (vinyl acetate) resins, phenol-resorcinol-formaldehyde resins, melamine-formaldehyde resins, and urea-formaldehyde resins was compared with that of the samples bonded with adhesives reinforced with mesh-type basalt fibers. Moreover, the flexural moduli of the laminated samples bonded by mesh-type basalt fibers were compared with those of reinforced samples. The results showed that boards laminated with polyurethane and urea-formaldehyde resin adhesives had higher flexural modulus than those without the lamination. In particular, the increase in the flexural modulus was relatively significant for the 2- and 3-ply board structures laminated with polyurethane adhesives compared to those with reinforcement. The 3-ply board structure without reinforcement had the highest flexural modulus when the urea-formaldehyde resin adhesive was used.

  • This study synthesized pure anatase carbon doped $TiO_2$ photocatalysts supported on a stainless steel mesh using a sol-gel solution of 8% polyacrylonitrile (PAN)/dimethylformamide (DMF)/$TiCl_4$. The influence of the pyrolysis temperature and holding time on the morphological characteristics, particle sizes and surface area of the prepared catalyst was investigated. The prepared catalysts were characterized by several analytical methods: high resolution scanning electron microscopy (HRSEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The XRD patterns showed that the supported $TiO_2$ nanocrystals are typically anatase, polycrystalline and body-centered tetragonal in structure. The EDS and XPS results complemented one another and confirmed the presence of carbon species in or on the $TiO_2$ layer, and the XPS data suggested the substitution of titanium in $TiO_2$ by carbon. Instead of using calcination, PAN pyrolysis was used to control the carbon content, and the mesoporosity was tailored by the applied temperature. The supported $TiO_2$ nanocrystals prepared by pyrolysis at 300, 350, and $400^{\circ}C$ for 3 h on a stainless steel mesh were actual supported carbon doped $TiO_2$ nanocrystals. Thus, $PAN/DMF/TiCl_4$ offers a facile, robust sol-gel related route for preparing supported carbon doped $TiO_2$ nanocomposites.

  • This paper proposes a volume meshing method that fills the inside of an object with tetrahedra, of which dihedral angles are good. The suggested method is fast, stable and easy to implement It can also utilize an octree structure to space-efficiently fill an object with graded tetrahedra by reducing the total number of tetrahedra. To obtain a high-quality mesh with good dihedral angles, we restrict the octree such that any pair of neighboring cells only differs by one level. To efficiently construct a restricted-octree and generate a volume mesh from the octree, we utilize a signed distance field of an object on its bounded workspace. The suggested method can be employed in FEM-based simulation of large elasto-plastic deformation and tetrahedral-mesh-based simulation of fluid flow.

  • #140 mesh and #600 mesh wheels were adopted to grind (111) and (100) oriented single crystalline silicon wafer and the grinding induced change of the surface integrity was investigated. For this purpose, microroughness, residual stress and phase transformation were analyzed for the ground surface. Microroughness was analyzed using AFM (Atomic Force Microscope) and crystal structure was analyzed using micro-Raman spectroscopy. The residual stress and phase transformation were also analyzed after thermal annealing in the air. As a result, microroughness of (111) wafer was larger than that of (100) wafer after grinding. It was observed using Raman spectrum that the silicon was transformed from diamond cubic Si-I to Si-III(body centered tetragonal) or Si-XII(rhombohedral). Residual stress relaxation was also shown in cavities which were produced after grinding. The thermal annealing was effective for the recovery of the silicon phase to the original phase and the residual stress relaxation.

  • In this paper, a hierarchical simulation with an approximate implicit method is proposed in order to efficiently and plausibly animate mass-spring based cloth models. The proposed hierarchical simulation method can generate realistic motion of extremely fine mesh in interactive rate. The proposed technique employs a fast and stable simulation method which approximates the implicit integration. Although the approximate method is efficient, it is extremely inaccurate and shows excessively damped behavior. The hierarchical simulation technique proposed in this paper constructs multi-level mesh structure in order to represent the realistic appearance of cloth model and performs simulation on each level of the mesh with constraints that enforce some of the mass-points of current level to follow the movement of the previous level. This hierarchical method efficiently generates a plausible movement of a cloth model composed of large number of mass points. Moreover, this hierarchical method enables us to generate realistic wrinkles on the cloth, and the wrinkle pattern on the cloth model can be easily controlled because we can specify different contraction resistance force of springs according to their hierarchical level.

  • This study examined the effect of various arrangement methods for forming peripheral closed hoops in the jacket section on the axial behavior of section enlargement strengthening columns. Four types of peripheral closed hoops arranged in the jacket section were prepared as follows: 1) Closed connection of prefabricated bar units (column P); 2) V-clip installation across the overlapped legs of channel-type bars (column V); 3) Use of glass fiber mesh for an alternative of steel bars (column F); and 4) combination of prefabricated bar units and glass fiber mesh (column PF). The V-clip is designed to form the closed hoops in the jacket section using the overlapped channel-type bars, preventing the opening of the channel bar legs. The glass fiber mesh is to examine the feasibility to apply for closed hoops in the jacket section as an alternative for steel bars, considering the easy construction. In the jacket section of all the strengthened columns, V-ties were arranged for supplementary ties, avoiding the interruption of the existing column. The axial stiffness and strength of the strengthened columns were insignificantly affected by the arrangement methods of closed hoops in the jacket section. The axial ductility ratio of the strengthened columns P, V, and PF was enhanced more than twice of that measured in the non-seismic existing column. However, the column F exhibited a lower ductility than the other strengthened columns because of the fracture of the mesh at the ultimate strength of the column. The V-clip approach was favorable to enhance the ductility of the strengthened column, preventing the opening of the legs of channel-type bars.

  • This paper describes a level of detail (LOD) based bending spring structure and damping technique that can reliably represent strain-based dynamics (SBD) on a triangular mesh. SBD models elastic energy using strain instead of energy based on the edge length of a triangular mesh. However, when a large external force occurs, the process of calculating the elastic energy based on edges results in a degenerate triangle, which stretches in the wrong direction because it calculates an unstable strain. In this paper, we introduce an LOD-based bending spring generation and energy calculation method that can efficiently handle this problem. As a result, the technique proposed in this paper can reliably and efficiently handle SBD based on bending springs, which can provide a stable representation of cloth simulation.

  • In this paper, the three-dimensional stress effect of thermal oxide is simulated. We developed the three-dimensional finite element numerical simulator including three-dimensional adaptive mesh generator that is able to refine and eliminate nearby moving boundary of oxide, and oxidation solver with stress model. The main effect of deformation at the coner area of oxide is due to distribution of oxidant, but the deformation of oxide is affected by the stress in the oxide. In the island structure which is the structure mostly covered with nitride and a coner is opened to oxidation, oxidation is reduced at the coner by compressive stress. In the hole structure which is the structure mostly opened to oxide and a coner is covered with nitride, however, oxidation is increased at the coner by tensile stress.
