The purpose of this study was to develop on east-west nursing intervention program. This study was conducted to identify the effectiveness of using facial meridian points for massage nursing intervention on the recovery of facial paralysis for 46 patients (22 for experimental group). All had suffered from strokes, and were also admitted to the division of oriental medicine in K University Hospital. Method: Data was collected from February 1st to December 31st of 2000. This study used a quasi experimental, non-equivalent control group pre-test and post-test design. The recovery of facial paralysis was measured by the difference between left and right facial length, observation and self report on a seven point scale, and facial discomfort by a facial scale after 6-7 facial massages in a two week period. Data was analyzed using the SPSS package program with x2 and t test. Result: The result of this study are as follows; The experimental group who received the facial meridian massage showed higher scores in recovery of facial paralysis (t=2.72, p=.009), and a smaller difference between left and right facial strength than those in control group (t=2.26, p= .29). The discomfort of the facial area in the experimental and control group showed no significant differences. Conclusion: These findings indicate that a facial meridian points massage could be an effective nursing intervention to the recovery of facial paralysis. This study contributes in developing an east-west nursing intervention with the oriental meridian theory and western massage therapy.

This study intends to identify the effects of Upper Meridian massage on the Reduction of Kyunbitong(Shoulder pain) in stroke patients. The subjects were stroke patients with hemiplegia in Busan D medical center. A total of 37 subjects selected by convenience sampling. : 17 for the experimental group and 20 for the control group. The data were collected by using questionnaires and measured values from 1 May, 2005, to 31 August, 2005. The study was performed with a non-equivalent control group repeated-measured design. The Upper Meridian massage consists of 15 minutes every two days for 3 weeks for experimental group. Pre-Post the treatment, shoulder pain of these two groups were measured. SPSS/Win 12.0 was used for data analysis, General features demonstrated by frequency number and percentage. $X^2-test$, Fisher's Exact test, 1-test were used for the two groups's homogeneity, and the effects of shoulder pain was repetition analysis of covariance. The result of the study are as follows : In the experimental group who had meridian massage shoulder pain on unaffected & affected were significantly decreased than control group. We observed that meridian massage are effective for decreasing shoulder pain of stroke patients. Therefore, we could confirm that its application is available.
Purpose: This study identifies the effects of meridian massage on relieving facial paralysis, pain, and anxiety in Bell's palsy patients. Methods: A nonequivalent control group pre-test/post-test design was used for the study. The subjects were 51 Bell's palsy patients (experimental group=26, control group=25) of D University's oriental medicine hospital. The experimental group received a meridian massage for 20 min three times a week for two weeks. The data were analyzed with the following methods by using the SPSS/WIN 12.0 program: $x^2$-test, Fisher's exact test, and t-test. Results: The facial paralysis scores of the experimental group were significantly higher than those of the control group. The pain and anxiety scores of the experimental group were significantly lower than those of the control group. Conclusions: The results suggest that meridian massage (applied by nurses) has beneficial effects on facial paralysis, pain, and anxiety in patients suffering from Bell's palsy. Thus, meridian massage is recommended as an alternative nursing intervention program for patients with Bell's palsy.
Purpose: It was investigated if abdominal meridian massage has effects on constipation in institutionalized psychiatric patients taking antipsychotic drugs. Methods: According to the constipation screening tests, 22 patients were selected as subjects. One group pre and post repeated measurement design was used. Constipation was operationalized as perceived constipation, frequency of defecation, frequency of bowel sound, and number of medicine taken to relieve constipation. Abdominal meridian massage was given for two weeks, 10-15 minutes each time and 10 times in total. Results: Perceived constipation, frequency of bowel sound, and number of medicine taken were significantly improved after massage. Except for number of medicine taken, the effects on perceived constipation and frequency of bowel sound were found to be persistent 2 weeks after massage. Conclusion: Based upon these results, abdominal meridian massage was recommended as independent nursing intervention for the relief of constipation in psychiatric patients who taking anti-psychotic drugs. Further studies to investigate the maximal duration time of effects and whether the effects of intermittent application of this method is more beneficial than the continuous application of this method are necessary.
Purpose: This study was designed to examine the effects of abdominal meridian(Kyongrak) massage on menstrual cramps and dysmenorrhea. Method: Eighty-five women (of 110 screened) enrolled in this study and were employed full-time with more than 6.0 points(in $0\~10.0$ VAS scale) in menstrual cramps or more than 20 points on the dysmenorrhea scale(range $13\~52$). The forty-two participants in the experimental group received abdominal meridian massage for 5 minutes per day during 6 days from the fifth day before menstruation to the first day of menstruation and the forty-three participants in the control group didn't receive any treatment. Data were collected from June 1st to August 30th, 2003 and analyzed using descriptive statistics, $x^2-test$, and t-test. Result: Menstrual cramps and dysmenorrhea of the experimental group were significantly lower after abdominal meridian massage than those of the control group (p<.001). Conclusion: Abdominal meridian(Kyongrak) massage was very effective for relief of menstrual cramps and dysmenorrhea. Therefore, we suggest that abdominal Kyongrak massage can be a useful nursing intervention for women with menstrual cramps or dysmenorrhea.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of the meridian massage on the hand edema, activities of daily living (ADL), and depression in hemiplegic stroke patients. Methods: The research was a quasi-experimental design using a non-equivalent control group pre-post test. The subjects were 40 stroke patients who admitted to rehabilitation department in a hospital. The data was collected from January to March, 2009 used the millimeter measurement for checking hand edema and the structured questionnaires. The meridian massage on affected hand was carried out for 10 minutes per day during 2 weeks to the experimental group. Descriptive statistics,-test, Fisher's exact test, and t-test with SPSS/WIN 12.0 program were used to analyze the data. Results: After the intervention, there were statistically significant differences in the changes of hand edema, ADL, and depression in the experimental group compared with the control group. Conclusion: The meridian massage was effective in improving hand edema, the level of ADL, and depression for the hemiplegic stroke patients. Therefore the meridian massage can be utilized as an effective adjuvant therapy for stroke patients suffering from hand edema in clinical practice.

In this study, meridian massage is developed and applied on post menopausal Women with Hemodialysis to identify the effects of Menopausal Symptoms, Mood, Estradiol($E_2$), and Pain. The study was a nonequivalent control group pre-post test Quasi-experimental design. There were 17 people in the experimental group and 17 people in the control group. Meridian massage was performed for 4 weeks, 3 times a week for 20 minutes each sessions. The data were collected at pretest and posttest. SPSS win. 11.5 program was used. Fisher's exact test and Mann Whitney U-test were used to analyze the Pre-treatment homogeneity. Wilcoxon Sign Rank test was used to find out the effectiveness within each groups. Mann Whitney U-test was used in comparing between the two groups. After meridian massage, there were significant differences in menopausal symptoms in experimental group(z=-2.583, p=.010) and pain between groups(U=86.00, p=.040). $E_2$ was not effective in both groups. The mood was effective in both groups, since the mood had influenced by interviewer's collecting data. Meridian massage was effective in alleviating menopausal symptoms and pain of post menopausal women with Hemodialysis, but it is desirable to perform meridian massage to the patients for enough time.
