  • Objective: This research examined mothers' and preschoolers' uses of mental state terms during pretend play and linked such use to children's independent mental state terms used in hypothetical narratives. Methods: Fifty four-year-olds and their mothers were engaged in pretend play and the preschoolers were asked to provide hypothetical narratives. Mothers' and preschoolers' mental state terms were analyzed in terms of types and frequencies. Results: During pretend play, the mothers and preschoolers used desire state terms most variously and frequently, followed by cognitive and emotion state terms. In the hypothetical narratives, the preschoolers used desire state terms most variously and frequently; however they talked about emotion state terms more variously and cognitive state terms more frequently. In addition, the mothers' mental state terms were correlated with the preschoolers' mental state terms during the pretend play, and the mothers' and preschoolers' uses of mental state terms during pretend play were related to the preschoolers' mental state terms in hypothetical narratives. Conclusion: Findings from this study highlight that, during the preschool period, a mothers' mental state language might foster her child's understanding of mental states in himself/herself and in others.

  • This study investigated talk about mental states in pretend play, to whom mental states were attributed, and function of mental-state terms. Also, frequency of mental-state terms of pretend versus non-pretend turns was examined. Thirty 4 year old preschoolers, each paired with a self-chosen peer, were observed and videotaped during a 20-minute play session. The observations presented the following conclusions: Knowing and pretending were the most frequently expressed. Children attributed a large proportion of mental state to themselves. The mental-state terms were used to refer his or another's thoughts and beliefs, to direct interaction, and to attract the other child's attention. Mental-state talk occurred within pretend more often than within non-pretend turns.

This data on which the analysis was based come from a survey of 466 middle-aged women is Seoul. The questionaire consisted of the 20 questions of the state-anxiety inventory by Spielberger and Lee, Hoon Koo's 47 questions dervied from the SCL-90 by Derogatis and the others. The data was analyzed using percentage, T-Test, ANOVA, Pearson's Correlation Coefficient. The results are as follows: 1. The state-anxiety status showed that 16.9% of the total respondents had badness state-anxiety. 2. The mental health assessment scale (SCL-90) showed that 3.4% of the total respondents had mental health problems. The most prevalent one was somatization, the 2nd and 3rd were depression and obsessive-compulsive. 3. The test of relationship between the individual background and the status of state-anxiety revealved that, there seemed to be staistically significant correlation between the state-anxiety and the academic background (P<0.01), family in come(P<0.05), physical health status(P<0.001) and marital satisfaction(<0.001). 4. The test of relationship between the individual background and the status of mental health revealved that, there seemed to be staistically significant correlation between the mental health and the academic backgroung(P<0.001), marriage status(P<0.05), husband's occupation(P<0.05), number of family live with(P<0.05), physical health status(P<0.001) and marital satisfaction(P<0.001). 5. Between the state-anxiety and the mental health of the subjects, there was a correlation that the lower score of state-anxiety was, the lower score of the mental health(r=0.57, P<0.001).

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to address differences between mental health according to sasang constitution and ego state among college students. Methods: Data for this cross-sectional study were collected by administration of questionnaires eliciting Woo's ego state scale, QSCC II for the sasang constitution classification, and SCL-90-R for mental health to 393 college students. Analysis was performed using IBM SPSS (version 19.0). Results: The Free Child ego and Adapted Child ego differed significantly among sasang types. The ego-gram pattern of So-eum type exhibited the N pattern (Nurturing Parent (NP)>Adapted Child (AC)>Adult (A)>Free Child (FC)>Critical Parent (CP), AC-high type), however, the ego-gram pattern of other constitution types showed the M pattern (NP>FC>A>AC>CP). No statistically significant differences in mental health were observed among sasang types, however, among ego states, AC and CP showed negative correlation with mental health status. Between So-eum type and So-yang type, AC was the factor predicting mental health. Between Tae-eum type and undefined type, AC and CP were factors predicting mental health. Conclusion: These findings suggest that sasang constitution could be an important factor in understanding the ego state and mental health status. We conclude that sasang constitution should be considered in interpretation of mental health status presentation in clients.

  • This study analyzed the relationship between stressful life events and state of mental health among middle class non working housewives and working housewives (104 pair) by age from June 5 to June 19, 1995 in seoul. The results of this study are as follows. 1. The degree of stressful life events was not statistically significant, but the degree working housewives group (Mean 1. 448) was higher than that of non-working housewives group (Mean 1.509). 2. The state of mental health showed statistically significant (p<. 01) the degree of non-working housewives group (Mean 7.36) was higher than that of working housewives (Mean 5.52). 3. The correlation between stressful life events and state of mental health showed natural in both non-Working housewives group (r=.497, p<.001) and working housewives (r=.532. p<.000), so increased stress is related to lower mental health. 4. The degree of stressful life events based on social psychological factor, showed statistically significant (p<.05) in the feeling of life, and the state of mental health was statistically significant in the part of feeling of life (p<.05) and subjective health state (p=.000)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine maternal mental-state talks while mothers and their 2-year-old children interacted in two contexts which were pretense/role-play and shared book reading contexts. Thirty-six dyads of mothers and their 2-year-old children participated in this study. The results showed that the mothers made more references to mental-state in the pretense/role-ply context than in the book reading context, but the ratio of using the three types of mental state talks(i.e., desire, feeling, and cognition) did not vary with the contexts. The most frequently used mental-state talk by the mothers was 'desire' in both contexts and the tendency to use the three types of mental-state talks in the two contexts was related. The results of this study suggest implications for providing useful information on the role of mothers in the development of children's theory of mind.

  • In this paper, we tried to derive characteristic parameters that reflect mental fatigue through EEG measurement and analysis. For this purpose, mental fatigue was induced through a resting state with eyes closed and performing subtraction operations in mental arithmetic for 30 minutes. Five subjects participated in the experiment, and all subjects were right-handed male students in university, with an average age of 25.5 years. Spectral analysis was performed on the EEG collected at the beginning and the end of the experiment to derive feature parameters reflecting mental fatigue. As a result of the analysis, the absolute power of the alpha band in the occipital lobe and the temporal lobe increased as the mental fatigue increased, while the relative power decreased. Also, the difference in power between resting state and task state showed that the relative power was larger than the absolute power. These results indicate that alpha relative power in the occipital lobe and temporal lobe is a feature parameter reflecting mental fatigue. The results of this study can be utilized as feature parameters for the development of an automated system for mental fatigue determination such as fatigue and drowsiness while driving.

  • Objectives : This research aims to analyze the relationship between the state of mental illness and oral health management of mental patients in mental health care institutions. Methods : The data were randomly selected from 474 patients in mental health care institutions. and analyzed by SPSS WIN 12.0 program. Results : Schizophrenia accounted for 79.5%(337 patients) ; alcohol dependency, 5.3%(25 patients) ; mental retardation, 2.7%(13 patients) ; mental development disorder, 3.0%(14 patients) ; mental delusion and dementia, 7.6%(36 patients). Those who were in 40s had the highest dental caries of 3.95 and the highest remaining teeth of 26.76 were shown in the 20s. The correlation between remaining teeth and mental retardation was the highest, measuring 22.38(p<.05). Those who were in 70s had the serious periodontal condition that accounted for 41.3%(12 patients)(p<.05). The correlation coefficient for all factors-dental caries, remaining teeth, need for scaling, and periodontal condition-between mental illness condition and oral health were all positive(p <.05). The regression analysis resulted in the formula Y(mental health condition)=2.999+0.166(dental aries)-0.028(remaining teeth). Conclusions : Those who had mental illness had very poor and serious dental caries and periodontal diseases, so it is necessary to manage the dental health care for the mentally ill patients.
